It's Monday, February 11, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Good morning! As the Engadget team limbers up for both Samsung’s big Galaxy Unveiled event and the world’s biggest mobile phone show (both later this month, we’ve got two smartphones that balance top-end specs with more wallet-friendly prices.

Style in spades, but what about everything else?

Review: Honor View 20 smartphone

Review: Honor View 20 smartphone<br />

Despite a price tag far lower than those of high-end flagship phones, Huawei’s Honor View 20 packs a handful of forward-looking features that some people will be able to use right away. There’s that 6.4-inch display that proves life with hole-punched screens won’t be so bad. And the 48-megapixel dual camera system has lots of potential (especially its super-crisp Ultra Clarity mode), even if it’s only just OK in most situations. The View 20 is a tantalizing package for the price, and one that’s well worth looking into if you don’t mind occasionally odd software, minimal water resistance, and don’t live in the US.

The Big Picture

Designer Scott Reinhard is trying to bring a modern touch to vintage map designs using 3D technology. He used elevation data from the United States Geological Survey to create 3D elevations of the topography, then merged the data with ye olde worlde maps.

Conventional fingerprint readers still work better, and where's my headphone jack gone?

OnePlus continues to deliver great hardware and software features with the 6T. However, a sluggish in-display fingerprint reader and the controversial decision to remove the headphone jack might give you pause. The 6T would have otherwise been a fitting successor to the highly praised 6. Read all about it on the site.

Fitbit’s new Inspire is a fitness band intended for companies that plan to issue wearables en masse, whether it's your health-insurance provider or a just a corporation that wants employees to stay active. It's the definition of no-frills. A basic version doesn't do much more than track activity and deliver phone alerts, while the Inspire HR adds heart-rate monitoring and GPS. There's no price listed, but that's likely to vary from deal to deal.

It's Saturday, February 09, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to your weekend! The theme today is looking back, whether it’s to mid-90s HTML, some of our highlight stories from the last week or quirky retro toys.

(View in browser.)

Of course it is.

Speak & Spell is B-A-C-K

Speak & Spell is B-A-C-K

Basic Fun is introducing a revived $25 Speak & Spell that includes all the familiar games, that simple segmented display (albeit one based on modern LCDs) and, of course, that signature orange-and-yellow design. There’s one other big difference: It's using recorded dialog processed to sound like it's synthesized, instead of generating sounds on the spot.

One last pic.

Elon Musk: Model 3 price now starts at $35,000

Tesla has lowered the Model 3’s price across all versions by $1,100, so you can now get the mid-range battery option for $42,900 before incentives. Meanwhile, the car's long-range version now costs $49,900, while the performance option will set you back $60,900. Elon Musk said that means the Model 3 now has a starting price of $35,000, though that's after you apply tax credits and fuel savings -- you'll have to wait a bit more for the long-promised Tesla car with a $35,000 base price.

The 'Captain Marvel' site revisits classic 90s web design

If you remember web browsing in the days of 28.8 dial-up and web rings then the official Captain Marvel site will be an unexpected treat. The movie is set in 1995, and appropriately its official website looks like something made for viewing via Netscape Navigator (even if its code is a little too hefty to access without a modern broadband connection).

Google’s new feature takes a page from Firefox Monitor.

Chrome can tell you if your passwords have been compromised

Chrome can tell you if your passwords have been compromised

Once installed, Google’s Password Checkup extension will simply sit in your Chrome browser and alert you if you enter a username / password combination that it "knows to be unsafe." The company says it has a database of 4 billion credentials that have been compromised in various data breaches that it can check against.

When the extension detects an insecure password, it'll prompt you with a big red dialog box to immediately update your info. It's handy, but users might wonder exactly what Google can see -- to that end, Google says the extension "never reveal[s] this personal information."

Editor's Pick: Wireless Carriers Caught Playing Fast and Loose With Location Data

Richard Adhikari
Feb 8, 2019 9:28 AM PT
AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint have sold access to subscribers' real-time location data to aggregators, which in turn have sold it to about 250 bounty hunters and related businesses, according to a report. In some cases, the data allowed users to track individuals to their specific locations inside a building. Some companies made thousands of location requests to data brokers. [More...]

Linux Task Apps: Plenty of Goodies in These Oldies
If you need a task manager application to run on your Linux operating system, tap into a software category filled with options that go far beyond the to-do list app you have stuffed into your smartphone. E-Ticketing Flaw Exposes Airline Passenger Data to Hackers
The e-ticketing systems of eight airlines, including Southwest Airlines and Dutch carrier KLM, have a vulnerability that can expose passengers' personal data, mobile security vendor Wandera has reported. They use unencrypted links that hackers can intercept easily. The hackers then can view and, in some cases, even change the victim's flight booking details, or print their boarding passes. [More...]
OceanX and the E-Commerce Subscription Wave
Becoming a subscription provider used to be a big and expensive task. To get into the game, a vendor needed to build a subscription business model right next to its traditional businesses, which typically involved building an e-commerce Web store and member site, organizing an online price list and catalog, and figuring out how to handle subscription business receipts, shipping and returns. Will the Sharing Economy Kill Personal Ownership?
The social networking era brought about a sharing economy. We share not only our lives, but also everything from cars to clothes to chickens, yes chickens. So, will we buy things in the future? [More...]
Zuckerberg's Take on Facebook's History Raises Eyebrows
Musing about Facebook's first 15 years, CEO Mark Zuckerberg positioned it as a David confronting a Goliath composed of hierarchical institutions. Facebook gives the masses a voice, he wrote. It brings communities together and provides businesses with low-cost outreach. Progress has been made in addressing the new social and ethical issues raised, including protection of privacy, he said. The State of Selling
What's the state of the selling profession today? In brief, it fluctuates significantly based on economic circumstances and a company's position in a category lifecycle.
