It's Wednesday, August 29, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

(View in browser.)

It’s just about time for IFA 2018 to begin, and we’ll have updates from the electronics show in Berlin arriving all week long. Of course, we’re also keeping an eye on gaming news like the latest indie titles coming to Nintendo Switch and digging into the latest CPUs from Intel.

Items Acer is bringing to IFA include a mixed reality headset with nifty detachable components and an impressive gaming chair/throne that must be seen to be believed, but we’re stuck on this simple laptop. The Chromebook 514 brings an aluminum frame, 14-inch 1080p screen and claimed 12-hour battery life for just $350. We’re wary of its unspecified processor, but it could be a compelling alternative to flimsier budget Chromebooks on the market.

Thunderbolt 3 only.

Samsung's Portable SSD X5 external SSD is all about speed

Samsung has revealed its first NVMe-based portable SSD, the Portable SSD X5. It has a read speed of up to 2,800MB/s and write speed of 2,300MB/s (2,100 MB/s for the 500GB model). Those read and write speeds, combined with 40Gbps-bandwidth Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, will let X5 owners transfer a 20GB file in as little as 12 seconds

And a new Indie-only channel.

You need to finish ‘Dragon Quest XI’

No spoilers, but its post-game is where Dragon Quest finally takes some risks and surprised Mat Smith, taking the tale in some crazy directions as it expands beyond the credit roll. Unfortunately, Square Enix's embargo demands that reviewers keep all this good stuff (and some heavy spoilers) to themselves at launch.

Intel's new laptop CPUs focus on gigabit Wi-Fi and voice commands

With its latest round of chips -- a new batch of U-series CPUs for mainstream laptops and the debut of Y-series processors for very thin machines -- Intel is focused on improving the ultraportable laptop experience. Plus, there’s gigabit Wi-Fi support built-in and new audio hardware that lets a laptop respond to voice commands even when it’s asleep. And yes, much better battery life. Expect to see some of these inside new laptops announced this week.

But wait, there's more...

1. AMD supplier GlobalFoundries supplier will no longer make next-gen 7nm chips

2. HDR10+ support comes to Samsung and Panasonic 4K TVs

3. Now is the time to start thinking about AI's impact on xenophobia

4. What's on TV this week: 'Ozark' season two and Amazon's 'Jack Ryan' series

5. Google Assistant now controls your Nest x Yale smart lock

6. Bose's new smart speaker and soundbars offer Alexa control

7. PS2 classic 'Onimusha: Warlords' will be remastered for Switch, PC, Xbox One and PS4

8. Google defends search policy following Trump accusations
