Today's Story Highlights

You Might Owe Cryptocurrency-Related Taxes
Got your attention? We thought so. In a recently published Notice, the
IRS seems to be offering some cautionary advice about the legal risks
associated with using cryptocurrencies to avoid capital gains taxes.
Likely displeased by the use of cryptocurrencies to avoid reporting
capital gains, the IRS may be signaling its intent to crack down on
cryptocurrency trading activity.

Windows 7 End of Life
Microsoft will end support for Windows 7 on Jan. 14, 2020. Windows 7
will continue to run on Jan. 14 as it did on Jan. 13. So why is it so
important to upgrade to Windows 10? The answer: cybercrime. End of
support means that Windows 7 no longer will receive the OS patches or
security updates that keep your IT systems safe. Uusing an unpatched
out-of-date system is like leaving the door wide open.

The Rise of D2C
Direct-to-consumer commerce, or D2C, is on the rise. Increasingly,
consumers are expecting to interact directly with the companies that
market and manufacture products. "Direct-to-consumer commerce has been
enhanced by the explosion of the Internet. E-commerce provides a more
convenient and frictionless buying experience," said Peter Edlund, chief
solutions evangelist at DiCentral.

Google to Offer 'Smart' Checking Accounts
Google plans to launch checking accounts next year. "We're exploring how
we can partner with banks and credit unions in the United States to
offer smart checking accounts through Google Pay, helping their
customers benefit from useful insights and budgeting tools," a
spokesperson said. "Our lead partners today are Citibank and the
Stanford Federal Credit Union."

Salesforce and Microsoft in Another Deal
With Dreamforce approaching, it's no surprise that Salesforce is making
a flurry of announcements. What is surprising are two big ones involving
partnering with other vendors, mostly on infrastructure -- announcements
that I believe make the idea of an information utility more real with
each passing day. I see evidence of an information utility forming.

It's Wednesday, November 20, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

The LA Auto Show is in full swing, so we’ve got electrified vehicles from Audi, Karma and Lincoln to discuss. A fourth Star Trek movie has found its writer/director, Sony is investing in AI for gastronomy and, last but not least, we have the list of Game Awards nominees. Enjoy your Wednesday.

(View in browser.)

And still has some headroom for passengers in the rear.

Audi’s E-Tron Sportback adds style and range to the line

Audi’s E-Tron Sportback adds style and range to the line

Audi’s third EV is this E-Tron Sportback. While the inside is similar to its other electric SUV, the sleeker design is meant to make the vehicle more stylish and, as a bonus, makes it more aerodynamic. That, along with tweaks to the battery pack, gives it more range, as it’s targeting an EPA-estimated 220 miles per charge compared to the regular E-Tron’s 204.

The Sportback is also Audi’s first vehicle to feature digital matrix LED headlights. If you live outside the US and get one of these, then when you’re on the highway, it will use micro-mirror to create a “carpet of light” illuminating the ground ahead in your lane. The Audi E-Tron Sportback will be available for purchase in Europe in spring 2020 and the US after that.

This isn’t the Tarantino Trek spin-off.

Next Star Trek movie will be written and directed by Noah Hawley

Next Star Trek movie will be written and directed by Noah Hawley While Hawley is so far best known for his work on FX TV series Fargo and Legion, he made his feature-film debut earlier this year on Lucy in the Sky. Now he’s reportedly slated to write and direct a fourth Star Trek movie in the current run, with actors Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto and Karl Urban all returning.

Celebrating 10 years of ‘Angry Birds’

This Angry Birds 'Venting Machine' is made for you to attack

This Angry Birds 'Venting Machine' is made for you to attack From mobile game smash hit to entire multimedia franchise, Angry Birds has decided to celebrate its 10th birthday with a venting machine you can, well, lash out at. Coated in red foam to protect your angry fists, the Venting Machine will only be available for one day -- Thursday November 21st, between 12 PM and 8PM -- but it'll be hard to miss with WWE star The Big Show putting it through its paces. For raging at the machine, you’ll get a little reward, too.

Sony AI unit launches to push R&D in gaming, cameras and food

Sony AI unit launches to push R&D in gaming, cameras and food Sony’s new AI department is going beyond Aibo. A new arm, spread across Japan, Europe and the US, will first focus on gaming, imaging and gastronomy. The latter addition will follow up on a concept video shown last year focused on ‘robot gastronomy’, so hopefully it will result in some interesting applications of AI and food -- so we can all shut up about our Instant Pots.

Spotify will give you podcast recommendations in a daily playlist

Running alongside what it says is “exponential growth” in podcast listening, Spotify has added a new recommendation feature called Your Daily Podcasts, to keep those listeners listening. It’s a regularly refreshed list of recommended podcast episodes, based on previous listening habits.

The recommendations include new episodes of listeners' favorite podcasts, sequential episodes of older podcasts, standalone episodes and timely episodes from daily updating podcasts. In a smart twist, Spotify promises to help listeners avoid spoilers by recommending trailers or pilot episodes of story-driven podcasts before later episodes.

‘Settlers of Catan’ is getting the ‘Pokémon Go’ treatment.

'Catan' AR game could ride on Niantic's tech

'Catan' AR game could ride on Niantic's tech A product page, source-code sleuths and TechCrunch tipsters suggest that Niantic is partnering on Catan: World Explorers, an AR title based on the classic colony-building game Settlers of Catan. While the game's mechanics aren't completely clear, it looks like it really is an attempt to squeeze Niantic's basic formula into Catan's world of hexagonal grids, road building and resource trading.

2. Karma's latest supercar concept boasts neck-snapping power

3. Lincoln's 2020 Corsair Grand Touring will offer electric all-wheel drive

8. Google Assistant's latest feature is a personalized audio news feed

Editor's Pick: Windows 7 End of Life

Mark Ian Anderson
Nov 19, 2019 9:39 AM PT
Microsoft will end support for Windows 7 on Jan. 14, 2020. Windows 7 will continue to run on Jan. 14 as it did on Jan. 13. So why is it so important to upgrade to Windows 10? The answer: cybercrime. 4 Ways Legal and Sales Can Collaborate
Sales and legal need to maintain a united front. This means being on the same page when it comes to contracting, as a significant portion of their work together is creating, negotiating and sending contracts. However, whereas legal wants to double- and triple-check that the terms are suitable, sales wants to send a contract off as soon as possible and shorten the time to closed-won. [More...]
Apple to Conduct 3 Medical Studies Using Research App
Apple is getting into the medical research field with its recent announcement of three studies to be conducted through its Research app. Apple Watch and iPhone users in the United States can use the app to enroll in the Apple Women's Health Study, the Apple Heart & Movement Study, and the Apple Hearing Study. Participants can use their Apple devices to contribute data to the studies. [More...]
GitHub Aims to Make Open Source Code Apocalypse-Proof in Arctic Vault
GitHub wants to make sure its entire warehouse of open source code survives an apocalypse by burying it deep within an Arctic vault as one of several preservation strategies. Microsoft-owned GitHub is creating the Arctic Code Vault as a data repository for the existing Arctic World Archive. The AWA is a very-long-term archival facility about 0.16 miles deep in the permafrost of an Arctic mountain. [More...]
Banishing Bias From the Leadership Selection Process
I'm spending a lot of time these days looking at the evolving market for artificial intelligence and the problem of bias. I think the problem in part is due to confirmation bias -- the need to look only at the information that agrees with a position already set. Another contributing factor is the lack of a set of metrics that we can apply consistently. AI systems will face similar problems. [More...]
