Today's Story Highlights

Ring! Ring! Your Presentation Is Calling, and It Wants an Update
Mobile phones have come a long way since Zack Morris lugged his brick of
a cellphone around the halls of Bayside High School in Saved by the Bell
. If Zack had one of today's smartphones, he'd be texting Kelly on
WhatsApp, posting pictures of himself and A.C. on Instagram, and
trolling Screech on Twitter. Today's smartphones have become essential
to human communication.

Creating Brand Loyalty in the Era of Now
Not so long ago, marketing usually meant gathering some demographic
data, placing ads in selected print and broadcast media, stuffing
mailboxes with direct mail, plastering the countryside with billboards,
and more recently, bombarding the universe with spam. Marketers no
longer can focus on delivering static messages, regardless of how
"targeted" or "multichannel" they may be.

Zoho's Catalyst to Growth
Now would be a good time to put Zoho on your radar if for some reason it
isn't there already. The Austin-based company just announced Catalyst, a
developer environment that helps programmers and others to speed
development of apps and microservices with capabilities inherited from
Zoho's apps portfolio. Catalyst is based on the company's internal
development tools.

Facebook's After-the-Fact Oversight
I wanted to like Kara Swisher's recent piece about Facebook's attempt to
wrestle with its demons, but I can't. It feels too much like self-
delusion. To cut to the chase, Facebook announced it was forming an
oversight board that eventually will have about 40 members with
responsibilities for policing its domain and reducing or even
eliminating fake news and propaganda.

Streaming Is the New Cable
NBCUniversal has named Matt Strauss, a longtime executive at Comcast
Corporation -- the parent company of NBCUniversal since 2011 -- to
oversee its new Peacock streaming service set to launch in April.
Strauss most recently served as executive vice president at Comcast,
where he oversaw Comcast's video, Internet and voice services.
NBCUniversal could have a lot riding on Peacock.

A New Business Model With Help From CRM
I have been writing about Salesforce for 20 years. That's incredible for
me because aside from marriage, there's nothing in my life I've done so
consistently for so long. Perhaps like a marriage, the thing that's been
attractive about Salesforce is its constantly changing nature. The
company went through a typical adolescence for a startup but it always
had a sense that it was changing the world.

Millennial Women Chart New Direction for E-Commerce
It's remarkable how a hot IPO can get discussion going. After a 50
percent rise in the stock price of The RealReal, the marketplace for
consigned luxury items, following its June 28 public offering, there's
been a search to define what is so lucrative about this company, or e-
commerce in general. The RealReal certainly has exhibited wisdom in
various aspects of its e-commerce strategy.

Fitting Clothing Sales to E-Commerce
When buying clothes, many consumers still prefer to head to a bricks-
and-mortar store, browse the racks, and try things on. There's something
about clothing, after all, that's inherently tactile and personal.
Gradually, however, the way people buy clothes has been changing.
Digital technologies are reshaping the world of online fashion sales.
One of the keys to sales success is personalization.

It's Tuesday, October 22, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

It’s Tuesday, and we’re approaching the holiday season with verdicts on the Pixel 4 and the Surface Pro 7, both of which get a mixed reception. There’s also a new Star Wars trailer, so make sure to watch through that before you bump into colleagues over coffee.

(View in browser.)

These new models are about more than just clean software and good cameras.

Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL review: A slightly flawed taste of the future

Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL review: A slightly flawed taste of the future The Pixel 4 series, on the whole, packs enough new tricks and advances to excite even wary Pixel fans. It’s fast, thoughtful and benefits from additions like a big 90Hz screen and the ambitious MotionSense system -- when it works correctly, that is. Beyond all that, though, the Pixel 4 XL’s real draw is its bigger battery. Conversely, the standard Pixel 4’s battery life is a major concern. If you’re enthusiastic about Google’s new additions and don’t mind a bigger phone, the Pixel 4 XL is clearly the model to invest in.

The best 2-in-1 PC gets a tiny bit better. But also a bit worse.

Surface Pro 7 review: USB-C upgrade, battery downgrade

Surface Pro 7 review: USB-C upgrade, battery downgrade Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 7 is pretty much the same as the Surface Pro 6, with one important difference: USB-C. You’ll also get improved performance and microphones, but at the expense of battery life -- and that could be a deal breaker for a lot of you. Reviews Editor Cherlynn Low says the Pro 7 is a good hybrid PC, especially for those who’ve been waiting for the new port, but it’s otherwise not worth spending $750 to upgrade.

Who can you trust?

Sunday Riley settles with FTC over fraudulent skincare reviews

Sunday Riley settles with FTC over fraudulent skincare reviews Skincare maker Sunday Riley has settled with the FTC over reports that it ordered employees to post fake reviews on Sephora's website in a bid to boost sales. Managers and Sunday Riley herself reportedly created fake accounts to post reviews for the pricey products between 2015 and 2017, and urged employees to do the same. They also asked staff to dislike negative reviews to get them pulled, according to the FTC, and even resorted to using VPNs to mask their identities after Sephora spotted earlier fake reviews.

Who needs a new tablet?

Amazon's Fire tablets and Kindles are on sale for everyone

Amazon's Fire tablets and Kindles are on sale for everyone The Fire 7 was cheap to begin with, and with $10 off (now $40), it's a bargain. If you're looking for a larger screen and a longer-lasting battery, there's also $20 off the bigger Fire 8 (now $60). The most recent Kindle model comes with a built-in front light for reading in the dark and is $25 off (now $65), while the Kindle Paperwhite, with a glare-free display and super-sharp text, is down by $40 (now $90).

Gorgeously soft looking.

The Big Picture: A star died violently and left behind this 'fluffy' ball

The Big Picture: A star died violently and left behind this 'fluffy' ball Stars die all the time, but the untimely passing of SN 1572, also known as Tycho's Supernova, is possibly the most famous. That's because it's relatively close to us in the Milky Way's Cassiopeia constellation, so when it exploded in 1572, it became the second-brightest object in the night sky for a time. Recently, NASA took another look at SN 1572 using the 20-year-old, still-functioning Chandra X-ray Observatory. Scientists were keen to figure out what caused the lumpy knots and threads that make it look like a giant dust bunny.

But wait, there's more...

1. NordVPN admits to 'isolated' server breach in Finland

2. Microsoft pushes 'Secured-core' PC tech to keep your firmware from being hacked

3. What's on TV this week: 'The Outer Worlds,' 'Dolemite is My Name' and 'Call of Duty'

4. More signs point to Apple's AR headset arriving in 2020

5. Blizzard may reveal 'Diablo IV' at Blizzcon

6. Google and Amazon approved home speaker apps that spied on users

7. What we're buying: BenQ's HT3550 projector delivers 4K HDR on the cheap

8. Netflix's 'The Crown' season 3 trailer shows off the new cast

Editor's Pick: 3 Coming Tech Advances That Could Boost Our Safety and Smarts

Rob Enderle

I was moved by the recent news about a woman being shot in her home by a police officer who had come to check up on her. Once again, I found it frustrating that people immediately jumped to apply blame before all the facts were in. From my reading, three mistakes contributed to the incident. The first was by the neighbor, the second by the police, and the final mistake was by the woman herself. [More...]
