The Dreamcast predicted everything about modern consoles

The Dreamcast predicted everything about modern consoles  Twenty years after Sega’s innovative console debuted, Devindra Hardawar reminisces about all the ways it changed gaming, and the impact those changes had even into the present day. Also, we asked readers for memories of the Dreamcast era, and your responses were just as incredible. Grab your VMUs Sega fans, we’re going back to 1999.

What to expect at Apple's iPhone event

What to expect at Apple's iPhone event There are only a few hours to go until Apple’s annual update on the evolution of its iPhones and everything around them. We’ve pulled together the latest rumors and details available ahead of the event, but the best way to see everything announced is to tune into our liveblog when the event starts at 1PM ET.

The best is yet to come.

Android 10 review

Android 10 review According to Christopher Velazco, “Dark mode is great, and so are Google's attempts to make its many privacy options easier to control.” However, the best parts of Android 10, like its Project Mainline efforts that try to get updates on your devices sooner, will take some time to become meaningful additions. With its support for foldable devices and 5G, Android 10 is looking to the future more than any edition of the OS we’ve seen so far.

That’s a big part of the reason why Nicole Lee said: "At a price that’s on par or lower than other similarly sized smart displays on the market, the Hub Max offers value for the money."

Smaller and better than ever.

Today's Story Highlights

Taking the AI Approach to US Problem-Solving
At an IBM briefing on its joint AI project with MIT, it struck me that
some of the training concepts could improve the quality of political
decisions to shift attention more to fixing problems rather than using
them as weapons against opponents. I'm not talking about using
artificial intelligence systems directly. I'm suggesting we apply
methods similar to those used to train them.

Multi-Cloud Strategy May Pose Higher Security Risk: Study
Users of a multi-cloud storage strategy may be twice as likely to face a
security breach as those that use hybrid or single clouds, suggests a
report from UK-based security specialist Nominet. Fifty-two percent of
survey respondents who adopted a multi-cloud approach suffered a data
breach over the past 12 months, compared to 24 percent of hybrid cloud
users, and 24 percent of single-cloud users.

Amazon Trying Out Hand-Scanning Payment System: Report
Amazon is testing scanners that can identify a human hand to use as a
payment method for in-store purchases. The company plans to introduce
"Orville" to some Whole Foods stores by the beginning of 2020, and later
expand it to all locations in the United States. Employees at Amazon's
New York offices are said to be using the technology to buy items from
specially equipped vending machines.

Sleep Monitoring Slated for Apple Watch
Apple reportedly has been developing sleep tracking functionality for
the Apple Watch. The new "Time in Bed Tracking" feature will let users
who wear the Apple Watch to bed track their sleep patterns. Consumers
who have multiple Apple Watches can designate one for wearing in bed. he
"Burrito" feature will let Apple Watch track a user's quality of sleep,
including movement, heart rate and noises.

The Beauty of Progressive Web Apps
As more Web traffic comes from mobile devices -- particularly traffic to
e-commerce sites -- it's becoming ever more important for businesses to
have content that loads onto small screens easily, quickly and
effortlessly. To some degree, native mobile apps until now have filled
that need, but they must be downloaded, and their functionality may have
significant limitations.

Today's Story Highlights

Rethinking the User Interface for Consumer Voice Tech
Voice can provide a simple, compelling user experience, but the path to
adding voice controls to any product, service or application is complex.
As dominant tech players continue to develop voice-enabled interfaces
and assistants, product designers, developers and manufacturers will be
forced to rethink the user experience. For many future homes, voice
control will be the primary user interface.

Big Data's Seismic Effect on the Broadcasting Industry
Digital transformation has left hardly any industry unshaken. In
broadcasting, it's safe to say that it has transformed completely the
way we create, deliver and consume content. Undoubtedly, the most
noticeable change lies in the shift toward the OTT format. Traditional
TV now plays second fiddle: 69 percent of consumers use some type of
streaming service.

Samsung May Have New Foldable Phone in Wings
Samsung's first-generation foldable phone isn't expected until later
this month, but reports of a second-generation device to be released in
early 2020 already have started appearing online. The next-generation
model is rumored to be a luxury phone that folds into a square. Already
dubbed the "Galaxy Fold 2" in some reports -- it will have a clamshell
design.

How to Choose Shipping Software to Scale Your E-Commerce Business
Implementing shipping software can be a big step in scaling your e-
commerce business -- providing a way to create shipping labels quickly,
to gain access to carrier discounts, and more. With the holidays
approaching, now is the time to get smart about your options. Before
deciding to buy, it's important to know which features to prioritize.
Label printing should be the bare minimum it can do.

Google's Pixel 4 might handle you on-hold calls for you

It's Monday, September 09, 2019.

Hey, good morning!

Welcome back! If you have an Xbox, you might have had some issues playing over the weekend, but Microsoft’s console is back online. We’re also wrapping up our reportage from last week’s IFA in Berlin, a show that centered around wearables, wireless earbuds and folding phones (or lack of). Google's next smartphone might be able to handle your on-hold calls, too.

Everyone has learned lessons from Samsung’s experience.

Companies distanced themselves from foldable-phone hype at IFA

Companies distanced themselves from foldable-phone hype at IFA<br />    Samsung may finally be ready to launch the Galaxy Fold, but other smartphone makers seem to be collectively experiencing commitment phobia. At IFA 2019, companies like Huawei, LG and TCL cooled their efforts in the foldable flagship race in various ways. While Samsung saw IFA as the venue to show the world how it's attempted to mitigate the problems with a folding screen, most other players are sitting out the hype. According to Reviews Editor Cherlynn Low, it should give them some time to reassess their foldable-phone ambitions.

Joy-Cons could be more comfortable if this idea ever comes to pass.

Nintendo explores 'bendable' Switch controllers

Nintendo explores 'bendable' Switch controllers<br />    Nintendo is apparently concerned that the Switch's Joy-Con controllers might not be flexible enough -- in a literal sense. The console maker recently applied for a US patent on Joy-Cons with hinges that would let the top half "bend" to provide a more ergonomic grip. This would work whether or not the controllers are attached -- side sections would let you slide them on to the Switch's rails.

And with six hours of battery life, you're not making many sacrifices.

Audio-Technica's $99 true wireless earbuds sound amazing

Audio-Technica's $99 true wireless earbuds sound amazing<br />    Our final report from IFA in Berlin last week? A killer pair of true wireless earbuds for under $100 -- and from a respected audio company. Audio-Technica seems to have nailed the most vital features of wireless buds. Oh, and there’s a $150 pair, too, but they’re just not quite as interesting.

Facebook, Google and Twitter are part of the alliance.

BBC, tech giants will fight fake news with an 'early warning system'

BBC, tech giants will fight fake news with an 'early warning system'<br />    The BBC has partnered with Facebook, Google and Twitter on a strategy to fight fake news and other disinformation campaigns. The effort will include an "early warning system" that lets organizations tell each other when they find false content that "threatens human life or disrupts democracy." Ideally, this helps companies quickly neuter disinformation before it has much of a chance to spread. The timing of the collaboration likely isn't a coincidence. Internet giants know that the 2020 US presidential election is fast approaching, and they’re trying to address lessons learned from 2016.

You won't have to pay attention until a human answers.

Google Assistant on Pixel 4 may handle calls while you're on hold

Google Assistant's ability to handle phone calls may extend beyond booking your appointments with a robo-voice. A 9to5Google source claims Assistant on the upcoming Pixel 4 will have the option of taking over when you're on hold, bringing you back when another human answers. You'd only have to tap a button to ignore the hold music and get things done. It's not clear if this will also skip the canned "your call is very important to us" messages, but that's certainly the dream -- you wouldn't be jolted back into the call until an actual service rep was there to help.

This might not be available the moment the Pixel 4 is ready, however. The on-hold feature is relatively young, according to the source, and might only appear at an announcement as a teaser of what's in the pipeline. It would be similar to how Google teased its Duplex service -- it didn’t show up on devices for a while.

But wait, there's more...

1. Ryan Murphy's first Netflix original series will star Darren Criss

2. India found its missing Vikram lunar lander

3. News anchor sues Facebook, Reddit after creepy photo appears in ads
