Today's Story Highlights

Understanding the IP Policy Changes Coming to Amazon Sellers
Amazon is keenly interested in protecting the IP rights of its third-
party sellers because the company depends upon them for their long-term
success. In a recent newsletter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos
explained that third-party sellers currently make up a majority of the
site's gross merchandise sales, with the share of revenue from third-
party sellers having grown to 58 percent.

Salesforce's Road to China
It was bound to happen. Salesforce was going to China at some point, and
it announced that action this week saying it was partnering with
Alibaba. There are so many ways to read this, but I don't have the
filters to resist comparing the announcement to what Robin Williams once
said about cocaine: "Cocaine is God's way of telling you you are making
too much money."

Square Opens Robotic Photo Studio for SMB Etailers
The newly launched Square Photo Studio leverages state-of-the-art
robotics to offer etailers professional-grade product photography. For
$10, clients can get three high-resolution, multi-angle digital photos
of a product. A spinning, interactive animation of the product -- which
site visitors can click and drag or zoom -- will cost $30. Clients can
highlight what they want the photographs to show.

Boost Your CRM With IaaS
CRM systems are the lifeblood of many businesses, and the volume of
customer data within them keeps growing as companies digitize more
processes. That data often is not being used to its full potential,
beyond basic reporting on sales metrics and marketing campaigns. With
the advent of mainstream machine learning and artificial intelligence
technologies, this is all changing, and quickly.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86142.html

Equifax Data Breach Settlement No Wrist Slap
The United States Federal Trade Commission announced that Equifax has
agreed to pay a minimum of $575 million as part of a global settlement
of claims against it arising from a 2017 data breach that affected 147
million Americans. The settlement with the FTC, the Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau, and 50 states and territories potentially could reach
$700 million.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86139.html

AI in Healthcare: Independent Living for Consumers
AI applied to healthcare includes a collection of technologies that
enable machines to sense, interpret, act and learn. AI implementations
for digital health can be relatively simple when they are focused
largely on personal patient engagement, or vastly complex when working
with big data sets, highly specialized diagnostics, and the workflows of
multiple highly complicated organizations.

Today's Story Highlights

DoJ to Examine Big Tech Competitive Landscape
The DoJ has announced an antitrust probe into big tech, following
several months of rumors that it was about to do so. The DoJ plans to
review how the leading online platforms achieved market power and
whether they have engaged in practices that reduced competition, stifled
innovation, or otherwise harmed consumers. The department will consider
widespread concerns.

Bug in Facebook Messaging App Exposes Kids to Strangers
A flaw in a Facebook app designed for children under 13 years old allows
kids to chat online with people unapproved by their parents. The
messaging app for kids is designed to give parents control over who
their kids text and video chat with online, but a bug in the software
lets a contact approved to chat with one child to talk to another
without the approval of the second child's parents.

Microsoft, OpenAI Shoot for the Stars
Microsoft wants to empower its Azure cloud computing service with yet-
to-exist artificial general intelligence technologies to create new
goals for supercomputing. It has announced a $1B investment through a
partnership with OpenAI to build new AI technologies. The two companies
hope to extend Microsoft Azure's capabilities in large-scale AI systems.

Why We All Need to Learn to Live on Camera
I was struck by a recent video of a soldier who apparently took some
woman's parking spot and then went off the rails when she objected. He
bad-mouthed the U.S. military and the U.S., abused his wife, and put his
child at risk. A decade ago we probably wouldn't have seen this
incident, but now there is a good chance that anyone who misbehaves, as
this guy clearly did, will be caught on camera.

The Path to Interstellar Travel Starts With Looking Up
Earthlings have a natural inclination to gaze at the heavenly bodies.
Many even dream of reaching for the stars. Mae C. Jemison actually is
planning to get humans to other solar systems within the next century.
Her goal is not an idle fancy. She has already been to space and back.
Now her passion is to unite humanity to focus on traveling beyond our
solar system.

Neon: A Wannabe Linux Distro For KDE Lovers
KDE Neon is a bit of an oddball Linux thing. Linuxland has an impressive
collection of oddball things. Neon looks and feels much like a Linux
distribution, but its developers assert quite openly on their website
that Neon is not a real Linux distro. It just installs and functions
like one -- sort of. That can make deciding to use it a little
confusing.

It's Thursday, July 25, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to Thursday! Samsung’s Galaxy Fold will attempt launch again this September, Facebook’s billion-dollar FTC fine is kind of meaningless and would you like a look at Windows’ redesigned Start menu? It’s already out there.

(View in browser.)

We’ll meet Samsung’s first foldable phone in September.

The Galaxy Fold release has been rescheduled

The Galaxy Fold release has been rescheduled

Three months after its postponed launch, we finally have an idea of when the $1,980 Galaxy Fold’s release date. Samsung announced that “select markets” will have a chance to get the convertible device in September.

Its engineers have changed the design to keep debris out of its hinge and discourage people from pulling the protective film off of its Infinity Flex display. The backing has extra metal reinforcements, and Samsung says it’s been working on increasing software compatibility, too.

Instead of Air, Nike is using these beads to battle Adidas Ultraboost.

Meet Joyride, a responsive cushioning system designed to adapt to individual foot strikes and offer high levels of impact absorption as your feet hit whatever surface you're running on. Nike says the idea is to "make running easy" and give you more personalized comfort, made possible by thousands of tiny, energy-packed beads that form the shoe's midsole. Nike's Joyride Run Flyknit will launch globally on August 15th for $180 -- although Nike Plus members have the chance to scoop them up earlier, on July 25th.

The Planetary Society announced that LightSail 2 deployed its solar sail on Tuesday as it was flying south of the continental United States. "Yesterday, we successfully set sail on beams of sunlight," said Bill Nye, CEO of The Planetary Society in a statement.

The best (and mostly free) apps to help you keep up in class

The best (and mostly free) apps to help you keep up in class

By design, school is supposed to challenge you -- to push at the boundaries of your understanding of the world and make you a more well-rounded person. It's not supposed to be easy, as much as it is fulfilling, but thankfully, there are ways to make your educational journey a little less difficult.

Luckily for you, a lot has changed since most of the Engadget team went to school. To help out, we've gathered a few apps here that should prove especially useful as you gear up for more long days of learning. (Trust us, you'll probably miss them someday.) Oh, and don't worry: These handy apps are all available for iOS and Android, so everyone gets to benefit.

And it won’t make a difference.

Facebook will pay $5 billion fine for Cambridge Analytica data breaches

Facebook will pay $5 billion fine for Cambridge Analytica data breaches

The FTC formally announced its $5 billion fine as well as a 20-year settlement order that dictates a new management structure, the creation of an independent privacy committee and new rules about how it must monitor and report potential privacy issues.

The company was also separately fined $100 million by the SEC and announced it discovered that some of its partners (including Microsoft and Sony) still had access to Facebook user data after it was supposed to have closed it off late last year. However, as Nathan Ingraham explains, this isn't going to change a thing.

Microsoft leak suggests a very different Windows Start menu could be coming

Microsoft has leaked what could be a new Windows Start menu. The company accidentally shared a Windows 10 internal build (18947) with its Insider Program, Windows Central reports. The most striking change is a completely redesigned Start menu that swaps live tiles for a grid of app icons. It also has a search bar at the top that lets you search both apps and the web.

So, it’s like the RTX 2080, but a little faster.

Priced at $700, it brings nearly the performance of a high-end RTX 2080 Ti. It beats out AMD’s Radeon VII at the same price, but NVIDIA’s mid-range Super graphics cards are better value

But wait, there's more...

1. The best gear for your backyard party

2. JBL's long-delayed Android TV soundbar is finally here

3. BMW adds an $80 yearly subscription for Apple's CarPlay

4. What's coming to Netflix in August: 'GLOW' and the 'Dark Crystal' prequel

5. RED blames Chinese manufacturer for its phone's terrible camera

6. Tesla CTO and co-founder JB Straubel will step down
