Today's Story Highlights

FBI, ICE Turn Drivers' Licenses Into Facial Recognition Gold
State motor vehicle departments have become a rich source of facial
recognition data for and FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement
agents. Researchers at Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy & Technology
reportedly used public records requests to gather a cache of documents
that show the agencies have turned state DMV databases into the
foundation of a vast surveillance infrastructure.

Anticipating the Merger of Apple and Oracle
After reading about the departure of Jony Ive, I'm trying to wrap my
head around Apple without a design focus. Now this isn't as hard as you
might think, given the last truly successful Apple product came out
around a decade ago and was called the "iPad." It is also somewhat
ironic that Apple just effectively relaunched the iPod, the product that
Steve Jobs rode to Apple's massive success.

Mageia 7 Pushes Linux Desktop Boundaries
Mageia 7 redefines the concept of traditional Linux. It is a solid
operating system well suited to both newcomers and seasoned Linux users
alike. The Mageia distro is a powerhouse Linux OS filled with features
and options unmatched in other Linux versions. Mageia Linux is a fork of
the now-defunct Mandriva Linux. The first Mageia version was released in
September 2010.

Can You Hear Me Now? Staying Connected During a Cybersecurity Incident
While good communication is pretty much universally beneficial, there
are times when it's more so than others. One such time? During a
cybersecurity incident. Incident responders know that communication is
paramount. Even a few minutes might mean the difference between closing
an issue vs. allowing a risky situation to persist longer than it needs
to.

It's Tuesday, July 09, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Good morning, there! Amazon’s Prime Day faces a threat, and we’re not talking about Target and eBay’s competitor sales. We also nail down some more details on Pokémon Sword and Shield, get a better look at what might be the front of the Google Pixel 4 and see the reality of 5G speeds when it gets to a phone and city near you.

And you can win an Xbox One.

Microsoft's Windows 1.0 announcement was about 'Stranger Things'

To celebrate the return of the show -- set in 1985, Microsoft's banner year -- the company is launching the Windows 1.11 app. It features classic Paint and Terminal programs, as well as Stranger Things-themed puzzles and exclusive content. No floppy disk required.

You can also expect creatures that change when Gigantamaxed.

'Pokémon Sword' and 'Shield' will have version-exclusive gyms

'Pokémon Sword' and 'Shield' will have version-exclusive gyms

When Pokémon Sword and Shield arrive in November, there will be crucial differences to creature lineups as well as version-exclusive gyms and leaders to beat. As an example: You'll take on the martial artist Bea in Sword, while the goth Allister will fight you in Shield. Nintendo has also revealed another additional game mechanic: Gigantamaxing. You might recall dynamaxing, which will make even the tiniest starter Pokémon huge and powerful, but some monsters will change appearance and be able to tap into special G-Max moves

Amazon staff will strike during Prime Day over working conditions

While Amazon is busy hyping up this year's Prime Day extravaganza, its workers will be drawing attention to more serious issues than price cuts. Staff at a warehouse in Shakopee, Minnesota, will hold six hours of strikes on July 15th (the start of Prime Day) to demand less stringent quotas and the conversion of more temporary workers into permanent employees. In a statement, Amazon responded: “We encourage anyone to compare our pay, benefits, and workplace to other retailers and major employers in the Shakopee community and across the country.”

Google reveals multiplayer support and other new Stadia details

A recent update to the Stadia FAQ revealed details on pressing questions like support for couch co-op (yes, four players), whether you’ll still be able to play games if publishers stop selling them (yes) and if the controller uses Bluetooth for play (no, just for initial pairing).

Notch surprising.

Google Pixel 4 XL renders suggest the notch is going away

We already know what the rear of Google's upcoming Pixel 4 looks like (in short: lots of cameras), and renders of the other side of the XL version suggest the smartphone will ditch the widely derided notch of the Pixel 3 XL. Instead, we’ll get a bit more of a lip at the top of the device. Tipster Steve Hemmerstoffer, aka OnLeaks, has a solid track record with leaks, and he and Pricebaba teamed up for more renders of the Pixel 4 XL based on leaked specs.

How to Run a Profitable Business on Amazon
Selling on Amazon can be an extremely profitable business all on its own. Third-party sellers like small business owners and authors on Amazon's marketplace account for 58 percent of gross merchandise volume. This provides a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs to make a massive profit. However, most entrepreneurs stop the process at taking a sale rather than scaling it into something great. [More...]
