Today's Story Highlights

Chinese Hackers Linked to Global Attacks on Telcos
Chinese hackers likely are responsible for a series of cyberattacks
against telecommunications companies around the world, security
researchers have reported. The campaign, dubbed "Operation Soft Cell,"
has been active since 2012, according to Cybereason. There is some
evidence suggesting even earlier activity against the telecommunications
providers, all of whom were outside North America.

Proposed Law Would Force Big Tech to Reveal Value of Consumer Data
A Democrat and a Republican have filed a U.S. Senate bill to require
companies to report to financial regulators and to the public what
consumer data they collect and how they leverage it for profit. "When a
big tech company says its product is free, consumers are the ones being
sold," said Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo. "These 'free' products track
everything we do."

Next-Gen Raspberry Pi 4 Packs Power Plus Potential
The next big Raspberry Pi thing is now here, with lots more computing
power and more options. The Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced the
availability of Raspberry Pi 4, a comprehensive upgrade that touches
nearly every element of the computing platform. Users have a choice of
three memory capacities. The entry-level 1 GB RAM retains the signature
$35 price; 2 GB costs $45; 4 GB sells for $55.

6 Things We Won't Be Able to Live Without in 2035
Things rarely happen as fast as we think or progress as slowly as we
hope. We all thought we'd have flying cars by the end of last century,
for instance, but we are due to be up to our armpits in them by the end
of next decade if the impressive number of trials continue to go well. I
touched on the drone drop issue a little last week, and I have been
thinking about it ever since.

Uber Drones to Make Meal Drops This Summer
Uber Elevate, the aerial arm of rideshare service Uber, will test a fast
food delivery by drone service later this summer in San Diego. Delivery
destinations won't be houses or apartment buildings, however, but
instead will be "designated safe landing zones." Those landing zones
could include the roof of a parked Uber vehicle in one scenario. An Uber
courier would hand-deliver it to the consumer.

Firefox Users Warned to Patch Critical Flaw
Firefox users should update their browsers immediately to fix a critical
zero-day vulnerability. Anyone using Firefox on a Windows, macOS or
Linux desktop is at risk. Mozilla issued a patch Tuesday, but the
vulnerability was discovered by Samuel Groß of Google Project Zero on
April 15. Mozilla's fix came after Coinbase reported exploitation of the
vulnerability for targeted spearphishing attacks.

Today's Story Highlights

LinkedIn Tweaks Its Algorithms to Skew Feeds to User Interests
LinkedIn has disclosed algorithm changes designed to favor conversations
catering to niche professional interests. The criteria for posts showing
up in members' feeds can be summed up as "people you know, talking about
things you care about," said LinkedIn Senior Director of Product
Management Pete Davies. LinkedIn tested 100 variations of its feed
models through online A/B testing last year.

The Greening of E-Commerce
E-commerce by its nature involves a lot of packaging and shipping, and
e-commerce companies can't always control how their products get sent.
There are ways to make these processes more sustainable, however, and
the benefits might well be worth the effort. "E-commerce won't stop
growing anytime soon," said Mark Bastiaanssen, CEO of Shiptimize. "Many
models are currently being tested."
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86095.html

Oracle Does OK - Surprised?
To all the geniuses who advised selling Oracle shares ahead of this
week's earnings call: You might want to recheck your calculations. On
your slide rule. The headline on Oracle's statement is all you need to
begin the self-recriminations: "Q4 FY19 GAAP EPS UP 36% TO $1.07 and
NON-GAAP EPS UP 23% TO $1.16." What were the naysayers thinking? More
importantly, what were they thinking with?
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86093.html

What Shifting Data Use Means for Pay-TV and Video Services
For many, Netflix was the first wake-up call that a new-generation of
online or technology companies could have a significant impact on pay-TV
businesses. Over a 10-year period, Netflix grew from a U.S.-only DVD-by-
mail service to a force in the international video entertainment
industry. Netflix operates in 190-plus countries, and it has
approximately 149 million subscribers.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86088.html

Plot Thickens With Dish's Interest in Sprint, T-Mobile Wireless
The merger between T-Mobile and Sprint has been dragging on for quite a
long time, but it finally may be in the home stretch. To get the deal
approved, Sprint and T-Mobile might have to sell off some of their
wireless assets to competitors. Many were surprised to see Dish
Network's interest. What would this mean for the merger and for the
wireless industry as a whole?
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86082.html

Customizing for Your Customers: How Headless Commerce Is Driving Change
The future is headless. As the world of commerce continues to mature,
today's most successful retailers have one thing in common: They're
getting better and better at meeting their customers whenever, wherever,
and however they want to shop. The number of possible commerce
touchpoints has grown exponentially, which means having a holistic
commerce mindset is critical for survival.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/86070.html

Facebook's Libra Cryptocurrency May Revolutionize E-Commerce
Facebook has released details about Libra, its long-rumored
cryptocurrency. The company outlined plans "for a new decentralized
blockchain, a low-volatility cryptocurrency, and a smart contract
platform that together aim to create a new opportunity for responsible
financial services innovation." The aim is to help people worldwide gain
access to a cheaper, more connected global financial system.

It's Wednesday, June 26, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to Wednesday. Amazon’s Prime Day is coming, twice, this July, and Target wants a shopping fight. Meanwhile, Sony does it again with another pair of capable noise-cancelling headphones that you should consider, and NASA briefly halts its Curiosity rover over a big methane gas emission on the red planet.

‘Did you… ’

NASA just witnessed its biggest methane gas emission on Mars<br />

Alright, stop giggling at the back. NASA confirmed that the Curiosity rover recently detected the "largest amount of methane ever measured during the mission." The levels were enough to pause the rover's activities as scientists sought more answers: Methane is a gas typically produced by life as we know it, after all, and it could well be a sign of life on the planet.

It will last for 48 hours from July 15th to 16th.

Amazon's Prime Day will be two days this year

Amazon's Prime Day will be two days this year<br />

Like that friend that decides to have a birthday ‘week,’ Amazon has decided to stretch its annual conspicuous consumption sale across two days. Amazon's annual Prime Day this year will start at midnight PT/3AM ET on July 15th and will last for 48 hours. If you wanted more options, good news: Target is planning to run its own sale across the same period.

The price is attractive, but the 1000XM3 is still the best choice for most people.

Billy Steele says bass lovers will have plenty to like about the XB900N’s emphasis on low-end tone. However, what you can get for $100 more on the 1000XM3 is worth the extra cost, especially in noise cancellation. Plus, the bass-heavy tuning isn’t for everyone. If you’re looking to save some money though, there’s a lot to like here.

T-Mobile’s 5G network is active in parts of Atlanta, Cleveland, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York, and now you can get Samsung’s Galaxy S10 5G to connect to it. The carrier -- which is still seeking approval for a merger with Sprint -- says it won't charge a premium for 5G, unlike some carriers, and that it won't raise prices on plans for at least three years.

Next year, NBCUniversal will launch an ad-supported streaming service, and once 2021 strikes, it will have “the number one series in subscription video on-demand” as an exclusive. That’s the time when Netflix’s deal to carry all nine seasons expires, and NBC will bring it home.

Dutch clean-mobility company Lightyear has debuted its long-range prototype car, the Lightyear One, with a range of 725 km (450 miles) and a small battery charged by sunlight or from conventional charging stations. The roof and hood of the car are covered with five square meters of solar cells beneath safety glass, which the company claims is "so strong that a fully-grown adult can walk on them without causing dents."

If you want the Lightyear One, the reservation fee for one of the first 500 cars is a hefty €119,000, equivalent to $135,000, and delivery isn't expected until 2021. A car that powers itself with green energy remains a unique proposition.
