Editor's Pick: Uber Drones to Make Meal Drops This Summer

Peter Suciu
Jun 21, 2019 2:57 AM PT
Uber Elevate, the aerial arm of rideshare service Uber, will test a fast food delivery by drone service later this summer in San Diego. Delivery destinations won't be houses or apartment buildings, however, but instead will be "designated safe landing zones." Those landing zones could include the roof of a parked Uber vehicle in one scenario. An Uber courier would hand-deliver it to the consumer. [More...]

Plot Thickens With Dish's Interest in Sprint, T-Mobile Wireless
The merger between T-Mobile and Sprint has been dragging on for quite a long time, but it finally may be in the home stretch. To get the deal approved, Sprint and T-Mobile might have to sell off some of their wireless assets to competitors. Many were surprised to see Dish Network's interest. What would this mean for the merger and for the wireless industry as a whole? [More...]

It's Friday, June 21, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Feeling alright after last night’s Neon Genesis Evangelion binge? Let’s catch up with the news. Google is getting out of the tablet business, and Apple might need to take a look at your 15-inch MacBook Pro. Also there’s a robotic fish that runs on ‘blood,’ and a Raspberry Pi causes computer security problems for NASA.

(View in browser.)

The Pixel Slate will be its last, but the tablet will still be supported going forward.

Google has made its last tablet

Google has made its last tablet

Google is no longer planning to make any tablet hardware going forward and will put all its resources behind laptops. In a statement received by Engadget, a Google spokesperson said that "for Google's first-party hardware efforts, we'll be focusing on Chrome OS laptops and will continue to support Pixel Slate." Google's spokesperson added that the company will continue working with third-party hardware makers on Chrome OS for both laptops and tablets.

The company insists they are just "surprise mechanics" like Kinder Eggs.

EA tells UK parliament loot boxes are 'quite ethical'

Regarding loot boxes, EA has come up with a novel explanation for why the controversial game mechanic should be considered perfectly legal. Appearing before the UK Parliament's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, EA's vice president of legal and government affairs, Kerry Hopkins, insisted that loot boxes aren't akin to gambling but are instead "surprise mechanics" like Kinder Eggs, the popular chocolate candy with toys inside.

Either head to the Apple Store for a battery swap or mail it in.

Apple recalls older MacBook Pros for risk of overheating

According to the company, the laptops contain a battery that may overheat and pose a safety risk. The recall "primarily" affects 15-inch MacBook Pros sold between September 2015 and February 2017, and they can be identified by their product serial number.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) suffers from multiple cybersecurity weaknesses despite the advances it has achieved in space technology. A breach in 2018 came when a Raspberry Pi device was targeted by hackers. They were able to grab 500MB of data and gain access to several major missions, including NASA’s network of spacecraft comms.

Today's Story Highlights

Firefox Users Warned to Patch Critical Flaw
Firefox users should update their browsers immediately to fix a critical
zero-day vulnerability. Anyone using Firefox on a Windows, macOS or
Linux desktop is at risk. Mozilla issued a patch Tuesday, but the
vulnerability was discovered by Samuel Groß of Google Project Zero on
April 15. Mozilla's fix came after Coinbase reported exploitation of the
vulnerability for targeted spearphishing attacks.

In Zuck We Trust: Facebook to Launch Own Cryptocurrency
Facebook's plans to mint its own digital coin will test the company's
consumer credibility. After being savaged for months for its cavalier
attitude toward users' privacy, the social network will be asking those
same users to trust its new cryptocurrency. The currency, called
"Libra," will be stashed in a digital wallet, the first product of new
Facebook financial services subsidiary Calibra.

Instagram Targets Account Hijacking
Account hijacking has become a nettlesome problem at Instagram so it has
decided to do something about it. The social media company has begun
testing a simpler method for users to reclaim their compromised
accounts. It allows users locked out of their hacked accounts to ask for
a six-digit code to be sent to the email address or phone number
originally used to open the account.

Improving Digital Literacy in the Workplace
It's anticipated that in the next five years 90 percent of the workforce
will require at least basic computer skills, such as using email or
company software. In the next 2-3 years, over 50 percent will need to be
able to use, configure and build digital systems. Those who lack digital
literacy may soon find themselves at a huge disadvantage.

Cisco's Take on Making the World a Better Place
I attended Cisco Live last week, and one of the things that impressed me
was how many amazing things the company has been doing that have nothing
to do with products, services or revenue. Most companies have a
philanthropic budget and donate, but they don't really seem to care if
the money makes a difference. For most, philanthropy is more about
uplifting their image than making a difference.

Winners, Losers and No Shows at E3 2019
E3, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, was in full swing in Los Angeles
this week. The annual trade show for the video game industry was not
without a few surprises, a few disappointments and as usual a few
companies that opted to forego the whole thing. Sony was among the
companies that chose to skip the event, while rival Microsoft was
present only via its annual press conference.
