It's Friday, May 10, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Happy Friday! This morning, we’ve got Nike’s augmented reality-powered sneaker-fitting app, our new guide to all the parenting tech you might need (and everything you don’t), and a new $80 AirPods rival.

(View in browser.)

And call your mom this weekend.

The parents of Engadget on the big (and often gimmicky) world of baby tech

The parents of Engadget on the big (and often gimmicky) world of baby tech

Whereas we used to just have one or two token parents on the team, we now have around half a dozen, each of whom has some strong opinions about where tech does (and doesn't) belong in child rearing. In our new not-Mother's Day guide, our resident moms and dads sift through the sometimes-gimmicky world of parenting tech -- a growing class of products that promise to make kids safer, healthier and, in some cases, smarter.

You're going to see Android Q's new gestures all over the place.

With Android Q, Google is pushing for more elegant, standardized gestures

With Android Q, Google is pushing for more elegant, standardized gestures

Google gave us our first taste of Android’s gesture-based navigation about a year ago, and it was, uh, pretty rough: The classic, three-button navigation scheme was replaced with a back button, a "pill" and a handful of swipe gestures that, to me at least, never felt particularly elegant or natural. Thankfully, it was always meant to be a transitional step.

Pretty much the only major thing from PlayStation’s late-night YouTube stream

'Final Fantasy VII Remake' still exists, and there's video proof

'Final Fantasy VII Remake' still exists, and there's video proof

Four years after we first heard the darn thing existed, Square Enix and Sony have eked out more seconds, mere seconds, of the remake of legendary RPG Final Fantasy VII. Shh, I’m rewatching.

Sonos will finally launch Google Assistant on some speakers next week

It's been more than a year in the making, but Sonos will finally roll out support for Google Assistant next week. The company confirmed the launch in its quarterly earnings release, saying that support for the Sonos One and Beam would first arrive in the US, with other markets to follow.

‘Minecraft’ is celebrating its 10th birthday by making Classic easily playable on the web.

Minecraft is celebrating its 10th birthday by making its Classic version easily playable on web browsers. It’s free, yes, but its features are pretty limited, too. You'll only have 32 blocks to work with, and it's strictly creative-mode only. But who needs zombies, skeletons and other mobs when you have the version's decade-old bugs to contend with, anyway?

The new feature will hit the Nike App later this summer.

Nike uses AR to help you find the right fit for your sneakers

Nike uses AR to help you find the right fit for your sneakers

Nike has toyed with augmented reality for years now, and the company is continuing to work on new experiences powered by the technology. The sportswear giant is now introducing Nike Fit, a feature that uses a combination of computer vision, scientific data, artificial intelligence and recommendation algorithms to scan your feet and find the right shoe fit for you.

That's nearly half the cost of Apple's true-wireless earbuds.

Skullcandy's take on Apple's AirPods will only cost you $80

Skullcandy's take on Apple's AirPods will only cost you $80

If I've learned anything in the time since Apple's original AirPods debuted, it's that there are a lot of people who don't mind wearing earbuds that extend down from their ears. Apple is currently on version 2.0, and Skullcandy has now revealed its take on the polarizing design. With the Indy, Skullcandy managed to pack a lot of features in an $80 package, including a handy charging case.

But wait, there's more...

1. Futuristic 'Fortnite' season 9 arrives with slipstreams and hover platforms

2. CIA 'Ninja bomb' replaces explosives with six long blades

3. Jeff Bezos reveals his 'Blue Moon' lunar lander

4. The new Android Q beta is a mostly cosmetic update

5. 'Ghost Recon Breakpoint' pits you against killer drones

6. Google Nest could rule the smart home, if it can get privacy right

7. Facebook co-founder urges FTC to break up the company

8. iFixit peeks inside the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL to see what's missing

Today's Story Highlights

Review Roundup: Pixel 3a Wins Kudos for Cameras, Battery Life, Assistant
Google's Pixel 3a smartphone, launched at Google's 2019 I/O developer
conference, has wowed reviewers with the quality of its photos and other
features, as well as its low price. "I like the direction Google is
taking with the 3a," said Ramon Llamas, research director at IDC. "While
it removes some of the features and functionalities of its cousins, it
still retains the key ones."

Microsoft Becomes Master of Its Own Linux Kernel
Microsoft has announced that its own full Linux kernel will power WSL2,
the newest version of the Windows Subsystem for Linux. This marks the
first time that Microsoft will include the Linux kernel as a component
in Windows. Microsoft also introduced a Windows command line terminal
that will add functionality to PowerShell and WSL. Both are intended
primarily for developers.

Google Showcases AI, Preaches Privacy at I/O Keynote
Google showed off its chops in AI and ML, renewed its commitment to
giving users greater control over their data, and introduced a new
economically priced smartphone during a keynote presentation at its
annual I/O conference. "They were there to hammer home the point that
when it comes to AI, they are ahead of their peers," said Paul Erickson,
a senior analyst at IHS Markit.

Get Ready for Feature Deluge at Apple's WWDC
Apple plans to introduce a boatload of new apps, features and
development tools at WWDC next month, according to a report. As it does
every year, Apple will use the WWDC, set to begin June 3, to reveal the
next versions of operating systems for its hardware products. For its
mobile devices, new additions iOS 13 include speed improvements and
interface changes, a Dark Mode and more.

Facial Recognition and the Fight for Diversity
I spent a good deal of my educational and early career as an analyst
doing research at scale. In fact, the way I got into the executive
resources program at IBM was through one of the largest research
projects my division had ever undertaken. A recurring issue with those
who attempt to address the diversity and inclusion problem is that in
the absence understanding it, they focus on the symptoms.

What Everyone's Getting Wrong About Digital Transformation
Digital transformation is all the rage right now, and tech companies are working hard to promote it. You can hardly take an action online or go to a conference without being bombarded by digital transformation messages from every angle. Some companies are even using it to sell items only distantly related to digitally transforming. However, digital transformation should not be the end goal. [More...]
