Today's Story Highlights

End of the Line for Windows 7: Open Road for Hackers
Microsoft has been urging customers to upgrade from its Windows 7
operating system, while attempting to ease the transition with several
options for extended support. It will stop providing routine fixes and
security patches effective January 2020. Regular support for Windows
Server 2008 also will end at that time. Windows 7 enterprise customers
can subscribe to Extended Security Updates.

August Adds Wireless HD Video Doorbell to Smart Home Line
The August View is a wireless doorbell that can stream sharp 1440p HD
video. It supports two-way audio, so you can talk to guests via an
Internet connection. The View can be paired with August and Connected by
August smart locks. That means you not only can speak to visitors
remotely, but also can let them into your house. That functionality can
be handy for accepting package deliveries.

Facebook's 2FA 'Security' Practices Violate User Privacy
Facebook has undermined privacy on its network by exposing mobile phone
numbers provided to secure user accounts through two-factor
authentication. That's because anyone can use the numbers to look up a
user's account. One doesn't even have to be a Facebook member to do so.
Moreover, there's no way to opt out of the setting, although it can be
limited to "friends" only.

EasyOS Teaches an Old Dog New Tricks
EasyOS is an experimental Linux distribution that either will renew your
passion for using something different or leave you disappointed in its
oddball approach to computing. EasyOS is a blend of the best ideas from
Puppy Linux and the now discontinued Quirky Linux. I have used several
of the popular Puppy Linux variants over the years. I adopted Quirky
Linux a few years ago as my go-to Linux distro on a USB stick.

Michael Cohen and the Creation of a Deep Learning AI Lie Detector
Like many of you I was fascinated by the Michael Cohen testimony last
week in what was more performance art than fact-finding. It tends to be
fascinating to watch disgruntled ex-employees testify, but they often
aren't the most reliable witnesses. The personal nature of their
termination tends to push them toward exaggeration, and many were fired
for legitimate reasons.

The Morning After: Nintendo is bringing VR to the Switch

It's Thursday, March 07, 2019.

Hey, good morning!

Between all the motor show news from Geneva, Mark Zuckerberg is pitching a privacy-focused revamp of Facebook (what would that even look like?), and there's a blast from the past, 1995 to be precise, with some post-Virtual Boy virtual reality on a Nintendo console -- hopefully minus the eyeball ache of the original.

The Virtual Boy is back.

Nintendo's next Labo kit brings VR to Switch

Nintendo's next Labo kit brings VR to Switch<br />

Labo VR will go on sale April 12th in a few different packages: a $40 Starter Set + Blaster that you can grow with two $20 Expansion sets adding either a Camera & Elephant or Bird & Wind Petal, or as a complete $80 VR Kit with everything included from the start. Can this VR setup succeed without a head strap or while using the Switch and its 720p, 60 fps display? We’ll find out in a few weeks.

Take a peek under the hood.

iFixit has torn down the entire S10 family, and it's evident that Samsung has stuffed each phone to the gills. Most notably, cooling is everywhere. The back cover, display and wireless charging pads are blanketed in graphite, while the touted copper heat pipe is much larger -- it's closer to that in the Galaxy Note 9 than the cooling you saw in the S9.

And it’s faster too.

Previously, the company claimed its bike would have a city range of 110 miles. Now, Harley says, it's good for 140, and it'll have a mixed range rating of 88 miles, for those who occasionally zip on to the highway.

Whose privacy is he focused on?

Mark Zuckerberg outlines a 'privacy-focused' revamp of Facebook

In a reflection of what he said during a recent fiscal-results call, Mark Zuckerberg outlined plans to rework more of Facebook's services around a "privacy-focused" approach over the next few years. This includes "simple, intimate" places where no one else can see your data, the use of end-to-end encryption, a reduced amount of permanent content, greater safety and secure data storage. Still, even the CEO had to admit, "Frankly we don't currently have a strong reputation for building privacy-protective services."

After Xbox and PlayStation, it’s Nintendo’s turn.

The Switch's online store isn't the easiest to navigate, so this guide aims to help the uninitiated start their journey on the right foot. These are the games from its first two years that you should own -- for now. We'll be updating these guides regularly.

The battle just moved to a new level.

Huawei is suing the US government

As Huawei continues to defend itself against accusations that ties to the Chinese government make it a security threat to other countries and claims that it has stolen technology from others, it announced a lawsuit against the United States. Huawei's ire is focused on Section 889 of the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). That section targeted it by name to block federal agencies from working with the company, which it believes is unconstitutional without a fair trial.

Today's Story Highlights

Target Hits the E-Commerce Bull's-Eye
Target has reported higher gains in last year's holiday sales, largely
due to improved e-commerce strategies and store makeovers, and has
offered an upbeat outlook. Its stores fulfilled nearly 75 percent of its
fourth-quarter digital sales. Holiday sales increased 5.3 percent.
Physical stores open for at least 12 months saw a sales jump of 2.9
percent. Online sales soared 31 percent.

Breaches: Fix the Issue, Not the Blame
Following a natural disaster that causes property damage to businesses
and homes -- say a hurricane, fire or flood -- how often do you hear
suggestions that the victims were at fault for their misfortune, or that
they could have done something to prevent the event from occurring in
the first place? Not often, right? We all know that events like that are
possible. We plan around those possibilities, and we don't blame the
victims.

Learning Online: Getting Down to Business
Online learning platforms have made it easier than ever to offer
workshops, courses and educational content of all kinds. In addition to
the growth of online learning in traditional educational spheres,
there's been growth in the business world. Companies increasingly have
been using online learning platforms both to train employees and to
educate customers.

Amazon Brings Big Guns to Battle Against Counterfeit Products
Amazon has announced Project Zero, a program that empowers vendors to
help drive counterfeits down. The anti-counterfeit campaign will employ
Amazon's advanced technology, machine learning and innovation. Amazon
will partner with Project Zero's participating vendors to protect their
intellectual property by detecting and removing counterfeits of their
products.

FTC's Fake Reviews Settlement May Spur E-Commerce Fairness Era
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has announced a settlement of its suit
against a company accused of using fake paid reviews to boost sales of
its health supplement product on Amazon. The settlement puts vendors and
marketing firms on notice that the FTC is committed to rigorous
enforcement of rules against fraudulent reviews on e-commerce platforms.
