Today's Story Highlights

Why Children Should Learn to Code
Learning to code, regardless of the path a child chooses to take, is
crucial today. Research shows us that this knowledge will be important
in any career. As both a female leader in technology and a mother of a
10-year old boy, I am acutely aware of its critical importance in both
my professional and personal life. Coding is a necessary literacy in
this technological age.

Google Taps ML to Boost Wind Farm Output
Predicting the power output of wind farms has been challenging, but it's
becoming less so with the use of machine learning. Google and British AI
company DeepMind have been using ML algorithms to improve predictions of
the wind power output at Google's wind farms in the Midwest. The farms
use the algorithms to predict wind power output 36 hours ahead of
generation.

Microsoft Defends Jumping in AR Bed With Military
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has defended the company's $479 million
contract with the U.S. military -- a commitment that some Microsoft
employees strongly opposed. While pledging to engage with employees and
consider Microsoft's role as a corporate citizen, Nadella said the
company would not withhold technology from institutions in democracies
elected to preserve the freedoms of their citizens.

B0r0nt0K Ransomware Threatens Linux Servers
A new cryptovirus called "B0r0nt0K" has been putting Linux and possibly
Windows Web servers at risk of encrypting all of the infected domain's
files. The new ransomware threat and the ransom of 20 bitcoins -- about
$75,000 -- first came to light last week in a forum post. A client's
website had all its files encrypted and renamed with the .rontok
extension appended to them, the forum user indicated.

Today's Story Highlights

Amazon Brings Big Guns to Battle Against Counterfeit Products
Amazon has announced Project Zero, a program that empowers vendors to
help drive counterfeits down. The anti-counterfeit campaign will employ
Amazon's advanced technology, machine learning and innovation. Amazon
will partner with Project Zero's participating vendors to protect their
intellectual property by detecting and removing counterfeits of their
products.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85873.html

FTC's Fake Reviews Settlement May Spur E-Commerce Fairness Era
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has announced a settlement of its suit
against a company accused of using fake paid reviews to boost sales of
its health supplement product on Amazon. The settlement puts vendors and
marketing firms on notice that the FTC is committed to rigorous
enforcement of rules against fraudulent reviews on e-commerce platforms.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85872.html

Why You Should Source Foreign Talent for AI, IoT and ML
The artificial intelligence revolution has been going on for a while,
but that does not mean all of software research and development is part
of it. It is, nonetheless, an interesting example of what pushes the
software industry forward. The ideas and techniques that brought machine
learning into existence were developed over the span of several decades.

Salesforce Reflections
Salesforce will be celebrating its 20th birthday on March 8. Where did
those decades go? "Time flies like an arrow," said Groucho. "Fruit flies
like a banana." There it is. A respectable chunk of the analyst
community that follows Salesforce converged last week in San Francisco
inside the company's cavernous new headquarters to hear about its plans
for the year ahead.

The Morning After: Tesla's $35k Model 3 goes on sale

It's Friday, March 01, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

And then it was March. Tesla closed February with an electric-vehicle announcement we’ve been waiting for, and Mat Smith offers some opinions for you to choose from on foldable phones.

(View in browser.)

And Tesla’s stores are going away

The $35,000 Tesla is here

The $35,000 Tesla is here

Elon Musk promised there would be a $35,000 Model 3, and here it is. It comes with a smaller battery, no power seats and in only one color, but it’s real, and you can order it online right now. Soon, ordering online will be the only way to get a new Tesla, too, as the company announced it’s ending sales in stores and closing most of its retail locations.

That will mean some employee layoffs, even though, as Musk explained in a letter, it’s part of the cost savings to deliver cheaper EVs in the future and contribute to price cuts on high-end versions of the Model S and Model X. If you are interested in purchasing one, you’ll also want to consider the newly re-divided Autopilot packages with an option for Full Self Driving in the future.

That doesn’t sound right.

Federal agencies in the US and elsewhere, including the FBI and Department of Homeland Security, typically spend up to $15,000 on current models of Cellebrite's Universal Forensic Extraction Device. Worryingly, cybersecurity researcher Matthew Hickey bought several UFEDs on eBay and found details on what phones law-enforcement officials searched (including specific device identifiers like IMEI numbers), when the devices were accessed and what kinds of data were obtained.

No, not to open Google Assistant.

Once you set your preferences, you simply need to double- or single-tap the button to open your app of choice. If the single-tap opens your favorite app, the double-tap will open Bixby Home, and vice versa. Holding the button will still summon Bixby Voice.

I have an opinion on folding phones

Foldable phones sound amazing: A smartphone that hides an expansive screen in pretty much the same form-factor as a standard phone. But reality is tough. Without tackling early concerns or ensuring that the phone's software works properly, it may be a hard sell.
