The Morning After: Wrestling with Windows 10 in HDR

It's Monday, January 28, 2019.

Hey, good morning!

Welcome back to your work week. You may have missed how hidden code inside the next version of Android Q might bring a Face-ID(ish) future to devices that aren’t iPhones, the pitfalls of trying to make HDR work on your Windows 10 machine and (most importantly) we’re taking selfies with Goofy and Donald.

(Read in browser)

If you want to buy an HDR monitor, beware of the pitfalls.

I tried, failed and finally managed to set up HDR on Windows 10

I tried, failed and finally managed to set up HDR on Windows 10<br />

You may have heard the rumors that there's not a lot you can do with a Windows 10 PC in HDR, that it's underwhelming and can be incredibly difficult to set up. Steve Dent decided to see how much of that was actually true. After many weeks (more like months) of setup and testing, he explains why HDR on Windows 10 still isn't ready for prime time, and how he got it all working anyhow.

But what about the animoji?!

Android Q might include an equivalent to Apple's Face ID

Android phone makers who've wanted to include face recognition have had to craft their own secure solutions or use basic face detection that’s not all that secure. But that’s set to change, perhaps. Sleuthers at XDA and 9to5Google have recently discovered code in an early version of Android Q that hints at native support for hardware face recognition. It wouldn't just be used for signing into your phone, either, as it could also authorize purchases and sign into apps.

It's embracing bioplastics and paper.

Samsung will replace plastic packaging with eco-friendly materials

Samsung will replace plastic packaging with eco-friendly materials<br />

Samsung has outlined plans to begin replacing plastic packaging from the first half of 2019 onward. It'll ditch regular plastic in boxes for phones, appliances and other products with bioplastics, recycled plastics and paper. It's even changing product designs to reduce its waste -- phone chargers will have a matte finish that doesn't require a plastic protective film during shipping.

The giant Disney-Final Fantasy collaboration reaches a climax. When Kingdom Hearts 2 launched, there was no such thing as an iPhone. Over a decade later, even Sora’s got his own smartphone -- and his social-media brand is thriving.

The Morning After: 'Metroid Prime 4' reboots

It's Saturday, January 26, 2019.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to your weekend! Along with a look back at some big stories from the last few days we also have a fresh look at Apple’s official iPhone battery cases, and some shocking news about Metroid 4.

(View in browser.)

$130 isn’t exactly cheap, but these make the competition tough for third-party options.

Apple Smart Battery Case review (2019)

Apple Smart Battery Case review (2019)

Apple's new Smart Battery cases give the XS and XS Max dramatically better battery life, and they tie elegantly into iOS to boot. Of course, strapping this case onto the super-sized Max might push it to a point where it doesn’t work for everyone, but that goes for any battery case. If you’re wondering about the XR’s case -- we received that one a little later than the others and will update the review when we’ve gathered enough data.

Ready, set, go!

Who will be the first Netflix for video games?

Who will be the first Netflix for video games?

Streaming detonated the film and television industries. The advent of Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and YouTube Premium sounded the death knell for multi-billion dollar businesses, altered the living-room habits of millions of people and changed studio production structures permanently.

Now, the technology and infrastructure necessary for consumer-scale seamless game-streaming is nearly here. NVIDIA, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Verizon and more major companies are making moves in this space, and they are almost ready to roll out their own Netflix-style gaming services as early as this year.

We’ll believe it when we don’t see it.

YouTube says it'll finally stop recommending conspiracy videos

YouTube says it'll finally stop recommending conspiracy videos

Google's video streaming service now says it won't suggest "borderline" videos that come close to violating community guidelines or those which "misinform users in a harmful way." Examples of the types of videos it will bury include 9/11 misinformation, flat earth claims and so-called miracle cures for major illnesses.

Bold decision.

Nintendo scraps 'Metroid Prime 4' development and starts over

Shinya Takahashi, Nintendo's head of development, said in a YouTube video the company wasn't happy with how development was going and that it hasn't met Nintendo's standards. As such, it's scrapping all the work carried out so far and essentially starting over from scratch. Whatever the exact reasoning for Nintendo's drastic move, Samus fans are likely in for a long, long wait before she makes her Switch debut.

On the other hand...

'Anthem' VIP demo gets off to a rough start

'Anthem' VIP demo gets off to a rough start

The "VIP" demo period for EA's Destiny-like online shooter Anthem started at noon ET Friday  and almost immediately ran into gamestopping issues. Despite being limited to invited users and those who had pre-ordered, it faced severe capacity issues and connection problems that eventually impacted all of EA's online services. The company said players should be able to access the game now, and hopefully it addresses all the glitches before an open demo February 1st and the game’s official release on February 22nd.

The $2,000 Acoustasonic Telecaster is the first in a series of American Acoustasonic guitars that puts the sounds of an acoustic guitar into the body of an electric guitar. According to Roberto Baldwin, "It sounds like someone has placed a mic up to a traditional acoustic guitar, but you have the option to switch to electric whenever you want to kick out the jams."

Today's Story Highlights

Marketing Mindfulness: A New Age of Digital Consciousness
In this era of stress and anxiety, being able to slow down, breathe, and
focus on the moment at hand are key skills for surviving and being
successful. Mindfulness has become a vital commodity, and those who can
coach others to live more mindfully are in particularly high demand. An
industry has grown up that offers everything from streaming yoga classes
to meditation apps.

CRM's Shift Toward Oligopoly
As markets mature, they trend toward oligopoly or even outright
monopoly. There isn't much difference, because an oligopoly has several
members instead of just one. Examples include electric power generation,
an oligopoly made up of vertically integrated monopolies in most areas,
and the airline industry -- an oligopoly made up of many airlines that
may have monopolies in regional hubs.

DoL Seeks $400M for Oracle Workers Underpaid Due to Discrimination
The U.S. Department of Labor has filed a court action against Oracle for
underpaying non-white male employees by as much as $400 million. "Oracle
suppressed starting salaries for its female and non-White employees,
assigned them to lower level positions and depressed their wages over
the years they worked for Oracle," states a filing by the DoL's Office
of Federal Contract Compliance Programs.

Apple Pay's US Expansion Will Fuel Mobile Payment Turf Wars
Apple on Tuesday announced more large retailers will accept Apple Pay:
Target, Taco Bell, Hy-Vee supermarkets in the Midwest, Speedway
convenience stores, and the Jack in the Box fast food chain. With those
additions, 74 of the top 100 merchants in the United States, and 65
percent of all retail locations across the country, now support Apple
Pay, the company said.

Future Whisper Coaching: Will AI Do All the Whispering?
The customer experience battle is being fought in the contact center.
Whether it's a service line or an inside sales call making first
contact, the phone is often the medium that matters in moments of truth.
When customers are talking to an inside sales rep or an agent in a
support organization, the ideal interaction is often described by
customers as "a conversation."
