It's Friday, December 21, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

This morning, we explain what a terrible year cryptocurrency had -- I hope you didn’t remortgage your house. Meanwhile, Xbox seems ready to have a strong 2019, and drones plunge one of the UK’s biggest airports into chaos.

After five years, two mid-generation console releases and a brand-new gamepad...

Xbox is poised to dominate the next console generation

Xbox is poised to dominate the next console generation

While the Switch and PS4 are riding high in this console cycle, Microsoft is better positioned than any other video-game company to take control of the coming one, which is expected to kick off in 2020.

Living the Marty McFly dream.

Nike's first self-lacing basketball shoes go on sale in 2019 for $350

Nike's first self-lacing basketball shoes go on sale in 2019 for $350

On Nike’s quarterly earnings call, executives revealed plans for an ‘Adaptive’ basketball shoe that will cost around $350. That’s about $400 cheaper than last year’s HyperAdapt trainers, but more expensive than the Jordan XXXIII with its strap the wearer adjusts on their own. The basketball HyperAdapt with an automated “perfect fit” should arrive in the spring.

The tobacco giant now owns 35% of Juul.

Marlboro owner invests $12.8 billion in e-cigarette maker Juul

Marlboro owner invests $12.8 billion in e-cigarette maker Juul

Tobacco giant Altria (which owns Marlboro and Virginia Slims) has bought a 35 percent stake in Juul for $12.8 billion. This puts the value of the e-cigarette company at $38 billion, more than double its value since mid-2018. Altria will place Juul's products next to its cigarettes on retail shelves. Many Juul employees were said to be upset when rumors of the investment emerged, believing it runs contrary to the company’s mission -- to help smokers ditch traditional cigarettes. However, Juul is reportedly paying out $2 billion to its 1,500 workers. With an average payout of $1.3 million that is likely to keep much of the company happy in the interim.

"It is a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick airport."

Drones cause holiday chaos at one of London's busiest airports

Drones spotted over the UK's second-busiest airport halted flights for hours. Flights at London's Gatwick airport couldn’t can't take off or land, and airport authorities said that 110,000 passengers on 760 flights were scheduled to fly. Police said there are no signs that the drone incident is terror related, but added that the activity is suspicious. "We are still getting sightings of the drone in and around the airfield," said the official in charge of the investigation, Justin Burtenshaw.

Hey, Galaxy Note 9 owners: We want to hear from you

When we tested the latest Galaxy Note, we found it "lived up to its lofty expectations" with a large, brilliant AMOLED screen, significantly improved S Pen functionalities and an improved battery life that lasted around two days, on average. But that was our experience -- now we want to hear yours. A few of you have already submitted some thoughtful reviews of the Note 9 and have given the handset some outstanding scores, and we'd like to hear from even more real-world users.

'Bandersnatch' might be the film-length episode fans have wanted.

Netflix teases 'Black Mirror' movie release

Netflix teases 'Black Mirror' movie release

Weeks after Netflix posted (and promptly deleted) a mention of a Black Mirror movie, the service has listed Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The odd five-hour, 12-minute running time (assuming it's accurate) has led some to suspect that this is the rumored choose-your-own-adventure show.
The deleted Netflix schedule had the Bandersnatch movie arriving on December 28th. Guess we’ll wait and see.

3. LG's Laser 4K projector beams a 120-inch picture from seven inches away

4. Google's 'Game of the Year' reminds you 2018 wasn't complete trash

Today's Story Highlights

Abusive Tweets Hurled at Women Every 30 Seconds: Report
Women are abused on Twitter every 30 seconds, and minority women are
harassed more often, according to Amnesty International. Volunteers for
Troll Patrol, a crowdsourcing project set up by Amnesty International to
process large-scale data about online abuse, sorted through 288,000
tweets sent to 778 woman politicians and journalists in the UK and the
United States last year.

AT&T to Switch On 5G in 12 Cities
AT&T is poised to activate its 5G network in parts of 12 U.S. cities. A
select group of users will receive a 5G hot spot that connects to AT&T's
5G+ network. AT&T's 5G service will roll out in parts of Atlanta;
Charlotte, North Carolina; Dallas; Houston; Indianapolis; Jacksonville,
Florida; Louisville, Kentucky; Oklahoma City; New Orleans; Raleigh,
North Carolina; and San Antonio and Waco, Texas.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85747.html

Oracle's Customer Transition Challenge
Oracle narrowly missed its number last quarter, so it was good to see
the company come roaring back -- it made a lot of money. More
importantly, many analysts have conceded that Oracle has reached a point
in its infrastructure deployment where it can mount a serious challenge
to other providers and supply the needed cloud services for its ERP and
cloud database businesses.

Chinese Scammers Game Amazon to Boost Sales
Chinese sellers have been using a number of underhanded techniques to
boost their global rankings and profits on Amazon, according to a
report. Grabbing the high ground on a search results page is critical
for any seller trying to rise above the din created by the more than 500
million products offered on Amazon, which is why some sellers feverishly
search for ways to get an edge in the rankings.

The Morning After: Behind the wheel of Lamborghini's SUV

It's Thursday, December 20, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

What do Lamborghini trucks have in common with light-powered ovens? They’re both a bit ridiculous, and we just reviewed them. Also, you should check out a fuzzy Japanese companion robot, and electric bandages could be on the way to heal your wounds.

(View in browser.)

It's like when The Rock puts on a tuxedo.

Lamborghini's Urus SUV still packs supercar power

Lamborghini's Urus SUV still packs supercar power

First off, this isn't the first Lamborghini SUV. The LM002 introduced way back in 1986 gets that honor. Second, the Urus is a result of all your friends buying large vehicles to get around town. It would be dumb for the Italian automaker to ignore the potential to make lots of money. Lamborghini is betting big on the Urus (starting at $200,000 -- no, really), and there's a good chance that wager will pay off.

It’s not all self-driving cars and drones.

Alphabet's hot-salt energy-storage project Malta becomes its own company

Alphabet's hot-salt energy-storage project Malta becomes its own company

Malta taps into the laws of thermodynamics to store renewable and fossil energy as heat in molten salt and as cold in low-temperature anti-freeze until it's needed -- you probably still need electricity at night, when the sun isn't shining on your local solar farm.

The feature takes the uncertainty out of launching unknown .exe files.

Windows Sandbox is a safer way to run programs you don't trust

Windows Sandbox is a safer way to run programs you don't trust

Downloading and running an unknown .exe file can be fraught with terror --  or entailing the need for a clean installation of Windows on a virtual machine. Now, Microsoft is introducing a new solution on Windows 10 that brings it in line with a standard already found on other operating systems: Windows Sandbox. The feature creates "an isolated, temporary desktop environment" (and lightweight, at 100MB) on which to run an app, and once you've finished with it, the entire sandbox is deleted -- everything else on your PC is safe and separate.

The DeepSolar program sorted through more than one billion satellite images.

Stanford AI found nearly every solar panel in the US

Counting is boring. Let the AIs do it. Stanford researchers crafted a deep-learning system, DeepSolar, that mapped every visible solar panel in the US -- about 1.47 million of them, if you're wondering. The neural network-based approach turns satellite imagery into tiles, classifies every pixel within those tiles and combines those pixels to determine if there are solar panels in a given area, even specifying if they're large solar farms or individual installations.

This method is accurate and (most importantly) fast. It took just weeks to map the country where a conventional approach might take so long the data would be redundant when it was ready. This could help governments decide on renewable-energy strategies, track solar adoption rates or even pinpoint economic differences based on the number of panels in a given neighborhood.

Even if you can’t afford an I-Pace.

2018 brought the electric car to everyone

2018 brought the electric car to everyone

It's great that people with large bank accounts can get behind the wheel of a vehicle that runs on electrons instead of dead dinosaurs. What's better is that 2018 showed that the rest of us can do the same thing.

But wait, there's more...

1. Didn't think Facebook could get any worse? Think again.

2. Consumer privacy made losers of us all this year

3. Brava's light-powered smart oven is too expensive to make sense

4. Japan's latest companion robot is the fuzzy, expressive Lovot

5. Microsoft Office app for Windows 10 provides a hub for all your work

6. Self-powered electric bandages could speed up healing

7. Razer's Turret is the first keyboard and mouse combo for Xbox One

8. Consoles hit November milestone with over 1 million in sales each
