It's Friday, December 07, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

It’s Friday -- you made it! If you can stop playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you can read our review or check out all the new trailers and reveals from last night’s Game Awards. We’ll also try to pick apart Google’s complicated messaging situation and go hands-on with the Qualcomm laptop chips that are trying to undo Intel’s dominance.

(View in browser.)

Every day is the same day.

Google’s messaging app strategy is still a mess

Google’s messaging app strategy is still a mess

Google's lineup of messaging apps has always been chaotic. Google Talk, Google Voice, Google Wave, Google+ Hangouts, the version of Hangouts that supported SMS -- the list is long and needlessly complicated. Worse, its approach to the RCS-enabled version of Android Messages doesn’t seem like an effective fix for the problem.

The Snapdragon 8cx is ready to handle a normal workload.

Qualcomm's new PC processor promises 'extreme' power

Qualcomm's new PC processor promises 'extreme' power

On the third of its three-day tech summit in Hawaii, the company unveiled the Snapdragon 8cx (the “x” stands for extreme). It's Qualcomm's second made-for-Windows chipset, but one the company says offers significantly better performance and energy efficiency.

Chris Velazco tried out some reference devices using it and found that "you’re still never going to use one of these machines for dedicated gaming, but the 8cx now seems more than powerful enough for actually getting your work done."

Elon Time strikes again.

Boring Company's LA tunnel event set for December 18th

Boring Company's LA tunnel event set for December 18th

Elon Musk's Boring Company won't make its projected December 10th launch date for the LA Test Tunnel. The good news, however, is that Musk locked down a "product launch" to take place on December 18th, complete with "modded but fully road legal autonomous transport cars & ground to tunnel car elevators."

The Game Awards 2018

The Game Awards 2018

Miss The Game Awards last night? While Red Dead Redemption 2 walked away with multiple trophies, our focus is on new announcements like the opening of Epic’s game store. Fortnite launched a new feature, live in-game during the show, that pulls from player-creations to fill out the map everyone plays on, and Persona 5 is joining SSBU. We also got a look at the eleventh Mortal Kombat game, a very “Fallout in Space” looking Outer Worlds title from Obsidian and the briefest possible teaser of a new Dragon Age.

Jessica Conditt has a few deeper dives including a new title from No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games called The Last Campfire. There’s also Dauntless, a monster-hunting game that hopes to include cross-platform multiplayer, and Far Cry New Dawn, a sequel to Far Cry 5 that turns its Montana setting into a radiation-soaked wasteland overrun with strange creatures.

Ready for a blast from the past?

‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ is the perfect nostalgia bomb

‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ is the perfect nostalgia bomb

According to Devindra Hardawar, “Ultimate has everything I've ever wanted, and, unlike its predecessor, it's on a console with a vibrant player community, so it'll be something I'll be able to play for years.” With 74 fighters and a ton of modes, it’s easy to imagine the game staying fresh that long.

But wait, there's more...

1. Falcon 9 misses landing after latest SpaceX mission to the ISS

2. How to buy a gaming keyboard -- there's more to it than pretty colors

3. Amazon workers hospitalized after warehouse robot releases bear repellent

4. Valve makes 'Counter-Strike: GO' free and adds battle royale

5. You can try out 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' for free

6. Ryan Reynolds is turning a Reddit short story into a horror movie

7. Tell us about your experiences with the Pixel 3 and 3 XL!

8. Apple Watch 4's ECG feature is rolling out

Editor's Pick: Google Hasn't Kept Promise to Stop Bubble-Wrapping Users: Report

Richard Adhikari
Dec 6, 2018 5:00 AM PT
Google hasn't released consumers from its filter bubble -- the package of personalized search results it delivers -- despite having promised to do so, according to study results from DuckDuckGo. Most participants saw results unique to them, the researchers found, which could not be explained by changes in location, time, by being logged into Google, or by Google testing algorithm changes. How to Use a VPN for Safer Online Shopping
With the holidays fast approaching, are you looking to buy presents online? The holiday season has become synonymous with online shopping. This isn't really surprising as physical stores usually attract crowds of deal hunters. This often conjures up images of throngs of people waiting in line outside the store, some even camping out. This activity is tolerable for some and even fun for others. [More...]
Is IBM's Watson Still an AI Success Story?
IBM's artificial intelligence creation Watson wowed the world with its appearance on the TV game show, Jeopardy! less than a decade ago. It was amazing to see a computer play against human beings and do so well. It showed how IBM was on a rapid growth path. However, in the years since, it has been struggling to maintain that leadership position as the AI growth wave has been building. [More...]
Did Marketers Underestimate Their Competition in 2018?
There's one competitor we underestimated this year. It's slowly draining the attention of every human on the planet. It plays into almost all human needs -- as they are defined by the Maslow Hierarchy. It's the rectangular status-seeking device in your hands. That's right. It's your smartphone. Maslow's needs start with the basics. Starting at the bottom of the pyramid, we all need food and water. [More...]

rectangular status-seeking device in your hands. That's right. It's your

One-of-a-Kind CRM
The hoopla over vertical market or industry CRM might be eclipsing a
similar move that does the same kind of thing but with less fanfare. In
the end, we might be discussing two iterations and just a difference of
degree. The proliferation of CRM development platforms by companies like
Microsoft, Oracle, and especially Salesforce, is changing how we regard
core functionality.

Virtual Reality: Slow Growth but Expanding Use Cases
When the Oculus Rift launched in 2014, industry stakeholders speculated
that the new, high-end in-home virtual reality headset would disrupt the
entertainment industry. Just four years later, the technology has
reached a crossroads, still lacking adoption by mainstream consumers. In
a recent survey, 25 percent of broadband households indicated they were
familiar with some type of VR technology, but just 8 percent actually
owned a headset.

AWS Thinks Inside the Box With Outposts Data Center Revival
Amazon introduced AWS Outposts at its AWS re:Invent conference in Las
Vegas. The new system, which provides AWS-branded boxes for use in
traditional data centers, will allow the company to make advances into
the world of on-premises storage, taking on legacy hardware vendors
including Cisco, Dell, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Outposts
technology can run on rival vendors' data center equipment.

Quora Looks for Answers in Wake of Massive Data Breach
The personal data of some 100 million people who have used Quora, a
popular question and answer website, has been compromised, the company
disclosed. "We recently discovered that some user data was compromised
as a result of unauthorized access to one of our systems by a malicious
third party," wrote Quora CEO Adam D'Angelo in an online post. "We are
working rapidly to investigate the situation."

Deepin Builds a Better Linux Desktop
Deepin 15.8, released last month, is loaded with more efficient layout
tweaks that give the distribution greater functionality and maturity.
Deepin, based in China, shed its Ubuntu base when with the 2015 release
of version 15, which favored Debian Linux. That brought numerous subtle
changes in the code base and software roots. Ubuntu Linux itself is
based on Debian.

AI Meets VR in New Nvidia Tech
Nvidia has announced a breakthrough in 3D rendering research that may
have far-reaching ramifications for future virtual worlds. A team led by
Nvidia VP Bryan Catanzaro discovered a way to use a neural network to
render synthetic 3D environments in real time, using a model trained on
real-world videos. With Nvidia's technology, worlds can be populated
with objects "learned" from video input.
