A better way to play 'telemarketer or friend with a new number?'

Google's call screening transcripts roll out to Pixel owners

You no longer have to stare at your Pixel to see whether or not that Assistant-screened call was worth answering. Pixel owners have reported that Call Screen transcripts are starting to reach older devices as well as the Pixel 3. Check the recent calls in your phone app, choose Call Details and -- if you have the feature -- you'll find a See Transcript option.

A much improved iPod Shuffle for Spotify.

Mighty Vibe review

Billy Steele’s excitement for an "iPod Shuffle for Spotify" waned after reviewing the first-gen Mighty player, largely due to a list of items that made it a burden to use. However, the company has addressed many of those directly with the updates present on the Vibe. Features like shuffle, podcast syncing and improved Bluetooth links make it a much better device to live with, and now the battery life can consistently last five hours. At less than $100, Mighty Vibe is a worthy investment for active folks and people who would rather leave their phone behind at times when music remains essential.

A bigger redesign could be waiting in 2020.

Apple may release AirPods with wireless charging early next year

Historically accurate analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that AirPods with wireless-charging support should arrive in the first quarter of 2019. He also suggested there would be more changes than you might expect. They'd update to a newer Bluetooth spec (presumably Bluetooth 5.0), possibly a new W-series chip, and would include design changes like a more heat-resistant hinge. One thing not mentioned in the note, however, is Apple’s wireless-charging AirPower mat.

Disney+ pencils in big names for streaming ‘Star Wars’ shows

Variety reports Nick Nolte has joined the cast of Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian, joining other big names including Pedro Pascal and Gina Carano. There's nothing mentioned about the role Nolte will play (Disney isn't commenting), but the casting is eerily appropriate -- Nolte was one of the candidates to play Han Solo in the original Star Wars movies. Simultaneously, Deadline has learned that the other series, following the story of Cassian Andor before his appearance in Rogue One, will have The Americans veteran Stephen Schiff as its showrunner. There are fewer details surrounding this show, but it will have Diego Luna reprising the role of Andor.

What a coincidence.

NVIDIA teases the Titan RTX, its upcoming flagship GPU

A bunch of social-media personalities have teased the Titan RTX, NVIDIA's next flagship GPU, in what looks like a coordinated campaign. The Titan RTX will likely pack 72 RT cores and 12GB of GDDR6 memory, according to previous leaks, besting the RTX 2080 Ti's 68 RT cores and 11GB of GDDR6 memory.

Marriott says Starwood data breach could affect 500 million guests

This week Marriott revealed that the records of 500 million guests had been stolen from Starwood's guest reservation database. The hotel chain says it determined on November 19th that an "unauthorized party" had accessed the data as early as 2014. Around 327 million of those records included some combination of name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest ("SPG") account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date, and communication preferences.

Time to forget 4K?

8K TV broadcasts launched today in Japan

As scheduled, at 10 AM local time on December 1st Japanese TV networks began publicly broadcasting 4K and 8K channels via satellite. We've only seen the beginning of a push for 8K this year, but now that there's actually a channel on the air somewhere it seems likely that things will ramp up next month at CES 2019.

Facebook Watch wants you to binge on free Joss Whedon shows

As part of a deal with 20th Century Fox, every episode of these programs from Joss Whedon are available to watch for free on Facebook. Facebook is also hosting some major watch parties since it’s all a promotion to boost the new social viewing feature. You can join the Angel Watch Party at 3 PM ET today, and get in on the Firefly Watch Party starting at 3 PM ET on Sunday afternoon.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company abandons plan for LA Westside test tunnel

The controversial 2.5-mile project underneath Los Angeles' 405 freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard had been the focus of a lawsuit filed by two neighborhood groups, accusing LA officials of violating state law by exempting the plans from environmental review. The company's LA/Hawthorne test tunnel is due to open next month, with Musk promising free rides to the public. In a tweet, Musk said “Based on what we’ve learned from the Hawthorne test tunnel, we’re moving forward with a much larger tunnel network under LA.”

AWS Thinks Inside the Box With Outposts Data Center Revival

Amazon introduced AWS Outposts at its AWS re:Invent conference in Las
Vegas. The new system, which provides AWS-branded boxes for use in
traditional data centers, will allow the company to make advances into
the world of on-premises storage, taking on legacy hardware vendors
including Cisco, Dell, and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Outposts
technology can run on rival vendors' data center equipment.

DoJ Takes Down Online Ad Fraud Ring, Indicts 8

The DoJ has revealed an unsealed indictment of eight defendants for
crimes related to their involvement in widespread digital advertising
fraud. The DoJ alleges the eight individuals were behind two global
schemes, 3ve and Methbot, which stole tens of millions of dollars
through a scam that used fake Web traffic and fake websites to reap ad
view revenue from unwitting advertisers.

Amazon's Shift

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon Web Services, announced that AWS customers
would be off all Oracle databases by the end of 2019 and running on one
of Amazon's database products. This is not the first time the market has
heard something like this, but this time could be different. The
statement comes on the heels of Amazon spending significant coin on
Oracle licenses a few months ago.

Salesforce's Earnings Mystery

My only question about Salesforce's recent revenue announcement is why
the company described the vast majority of its nonprofessional services
revenues as "subscription and support." Proserv revenues were
appropriately small, at $224 million, while subscription and support was
$3.17 billion, or 26 percent more than the same quarter a year earlier.

The Unsustainability of Black Friday and Cyber Monday for E-Commerce

Black Friday made its debut sometime in the 1960s as the day to help
retailers move from the red to the black in profits. The day-after-
Thanksgiving shopping extravaganza has grown well beyond its roots since
then. Last year, at the peak of Black Friday, shoppers were spending
nearly $1 million per minute. However, the origins of Black Friday were
pre-Internet.
