It's Wednesday, November 14, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Now that Amazon’s expansion drama is over, we can focus on the important things in life, like Keurig’s new bartender-in-a-box. Also, a new space race is heating up and we’ve reviewed the latest Kindle Paperwhite.

(View in browser.)

It’s finally official.

Amazon's HQ2 will be split between NYC and Arlington, Virginia

Amazon's HQ2 will be split between NYC and Arlington, Virginia

The NYC site is coming to Long Island City and will span four-million square feet and make room for 25,000 new jobs, while Arlington's ‘National Landing’ -- a name that has surprised people who already live and work in the Crystal City area -- will get a similar amount of space and create the same number of jobs.

Audible support and waterproofing improve on a winning formula.

Kindle Paperwhite review: A classic, updated

Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite has long been the go-to ereader, and for good reason. It provides an enjoyable reading experience with enough premium features to keep most literary lovers happy. Now, with the addition of Bluetooth/Audible and waterproofing, it’s even more useful and durable than before. According to James Trew: Skip the base model and go straight to this one.

Juul stops selling flavored e-cigarette pods, kills social-media accounts

E-cig company Juul Labs announced that it will stop selling most of its flavored vaping pods in retail stores, holding on to a few that replicate cigarette-smoking experiences, like menthol. The company will also end its social-media promotions and advertisements. These changes come as the government prepares to apply more scrutiny to the vape brand and its potential targeting of kids.

The best home and kitchen gear to give as gifts

Smart speakers are hot options this year, whether it's an Echo Dot to check the weather or a Smart Display to get directions. And it's a good time to be an aspiring chef -- you can cook sous vide with a Precision Cooker Nano or hop on a culinary trend with the Instant Pot Ultra 6-Quart.

Drinkworks Home Bar is a literal Keurig for cocktails

The "Keurig of cocktails" market is already crowded with wannabes that don't seem to be gaining much traction, but if anyone can build the Keurig of anything, it's got to be Keurig itself, right? Drinkworks is a joint venture between the single-serving coffee-pod giant and Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), and it's building a familiar-looking machine that mixes up cocktails using disposable pods. The results are drinkable, but it’s still a hard sell.

Today's Story Highlights

Star Explorer Mae Jemison: The Sky Connects Us
Mae Jemison recently shared some illuminating recollections of her
astronaut experiences, but they were neither the starting point nor the
ending point of our conversation. This extraordinary woman's career is
too packed with present and future endeavors to dwell very long on her
stellar past. She currently leads 100 Year Starship, which aims to make
interstellar travel a reality within a century.

Google Shows Off New Android Dev Tools
Google has announced support for a range of new Android tools for
application developers, chief among them the creation of a new support
category for foldable devices. After years of speculation, it finally
looks as though foldable screen smartphones are headed to market.
Google's dev announcement followed closely on the heels of Samsung's
announcement of a folding phone/tablet prototype.

Let's Create a TV Show to Fix Silicon Valley
Startups have been creating employee hell in Silicon Valley. That was on
my mind as I read the book Lab Rats: How Silicon Valley Made Work
Miserable for the Rest of Us . I think this book should be required
reading for anybody who thinks working for a startup in Silicon Valley
would be fun. Unless you are into humiliation and abuse you probably
should avoid these startups like the plague.

The Internet's Precarious Health
Mozilla has launched the first full edition of its Internet Health
Report. The report is "an open source effort to explore the state of
human life on the Internet," said Mozilla Executive Director Mark
Surman. It consists of research and analysis about the Internet compiled
by researchers, engineers, data scientists, policy analysts and artists
in Mozilla's extended community.

6 Ways Retailers Can Hold Their Own in the Microbrand Revolution
The holiday shopping season is kicking off! It is only a matter of time before carols and bright lights greet us in malls and shopping centers. One popular item on many of this year's wish lists is the Velvet Lip Kit. To fulfill this particular wish, givers can skip the crowds and the checkout lines. They can skip the retail stores all together, at least for this one item, by ordering it through Kylie Jenner's direct-to-consumer online channel. [More...]
HBO Fires Back at Dish in Blackout Tussle
HBO chief Richard Plepler has issued a response to Dish CEO Charlie Ergen's claim that the ongoing impasse between the companies was the result of a purely anticompetitive play on AT&T's part. It was Dish that dropped HBO and Cinemax signals at midnight on Oct. 31, blacking out programming for subscribers, Plepler said. That was the first time in HBO's nearly 50-year history that any pay-TV service dropped the premium channel from its lineup. [More...]
With Gamification, Everyone Wins
Gamification is one of the hottest trends in the business world. Incorporating game elements can be a great way to engage customers and employees alike -- using an activity that has appealed to humankind since its beginnings. "Humans have been playing games for thousands of years. Some argue that games predate culture," said Brandon Marsala, creative director of content and strategy at Mindspace. [More...]
Got a Screwdriver? GalliumOS Can Turn Chromebooks Into Linux Boxes
GalliumOS is a Chromebook-specific Linux variant. It lets you put a real Linux distro on a Chromebook. My recent review of a new Chromebook feature -- the ability to run Linux apps on some Chromebook models -- sparked my interest in other technologies that run complete Linux distros on some Chromebooks without using ChromeOS. GalliumOS can be a handy workaround. [More...]
