It's Wednesday, September 19, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Sony picks up a strategy from Nintendo, and we have our first impressions of the iPhone XS family. It’s Wednesday, so update your old iPhone without fear and take a look at an awe-inspiring early image taken by NASA’s TESS spacecraft.

PlayStation Classic jumps on the retro trend December 3rd

PlayStation Classic jumps on the retro trend December 3rd

Apparently Sony has been watching the success of Nintendo’s miniature Classic systems because this holiday season, it’s reaching back for a PlayStation Classic. It’s 45 percent of the size of the original and comes pre-loaded with 20 titles (so far Sony has only confirmed Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash and Wild Arms). It comes with two PS1 controllers (no analog sticks), a virtual memory card and buttons that help change or suspend games, but you’ll have to bring your own USB power adapter.

Expect our full review soon.

iPhone XS and XS Max, Day 1: A clear step forward

iPhone XS and XS Max, Day 1: A clear step forward

We're still in the middle of testing our iPhone XS and XS Max -- you can expect our full, detailed review soon. In the meantime, we've picked up on a few things that you should definitely keep in mind before these new flagship phones go on sale. So far, the camera is noticeably improved from the iPhone X, and the faster Face ID makes unlocking feel even more magical. If you're still rocking an older iPhone, either of these would be phenomenal upgrades, but the colorful, fascinating iPhone XR is right around the corner and might be a better bang for your buck.

Has Bose been dethroned?

These aren’t just a great pair of noise-canceling headphones, they’re quality cans, period. While you used to have to choose between great sound quality and decent noise reduction, the 1000XM3 does both while being a blast to listen to.

Nintendo Switch Online lands

Nintendo Switch Online lands

A premium online and multiplayer experience is finally available for the Nintendo Switch. The biggest change subscribers will notice is that their saves are no longer tied to one console (as long as they keep their subscription active) for games that support its new cloud save feature. If you don’t want to pay the $20 annual fee, don’t worry, you’ll still be able to play Fortnite -- good to know if you snag the special edition Switch bundle that’s going on sale October 5th with some extra bonuses.

Planned unobsolescence?

Don't be afraid to upgrade your old iPhone to iOS 12

Don't be afraid to upgrade your old iPhone to iOS 12

At WWDC this year, Apple said iOS 12 would deliver improved performance on devices as old as 2013's iPhone 5s. After spending the last day or so playing with iOS 12 on his iPhone 6s, Nathan Ingraham can say that Apple has definitely breathed new life into the device.

Time to go find some planets.

NASA's TESS spacecraft captures 'first light' image

The planet-hunting spacecraft's four cameras have taken their "first light" image -- the first astronomical photo after a telescope has been assembled -- showing the satellite's full field of view. The whole photo, which TESS captured during a 30-minute period on August 7th, shows a dozen constellations. It represents one of the 26 sectors TESS will monitor over the next two years. The spacecraft will observe one sector for 27 days each, with the first half making up the southern sky taking place during its first year.

MCU heroes could get their own shows on Disney's streaming service

According to a report from Variety, Disney may be preparing big-budget TV series featuring characters (and the actors who play them) from the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. They’d be exclusive for its streaming service that will launch next year and give viewers even more reason to consider it as a Netflix complement or alternative. The idea apparently is to focus on second-tier super-powered characters who haven’t had a solo movie, like Scarlet Witch or Loki.

But wait, there's more...

1. 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' returns as a live-action Netflix series

2. Google Maps works with Apple CarPlay following iOS 12 update

3. The 2018 Emmys were a watershed moment for streaming TV

4. Vizio's Dolby Atmos home theater speakers arrive starting at $500

5. US government payment site leaks 14 million customer records

6. Who is Yusaku Maezawa, SpaceX's first lunar tourist?

7. Tesla's built-in dashcam feature is coming with Autopilot 9

8. The world's first hydrogen train is now in service

The Morning After: Apple's iOS 12 is here

It's Tuesday, September 18, 2018.

Hey, good morning!

It’s Tuesday, and we’re testing out new Siri Shortcuts on iOS 12 (you’ve updated, right?), getting all the details on Audi’s high-tech SUV and rejoicing that Twitter plans to revive the purely chronological timeline. (Read online.)

If you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford the trip.

When the Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) launches in 2023, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa will go on a five-day expedition with six to eight artists -- from architects and musicians to fashion designers and visual-media creators -- selected from around the globe. The BFR is expected to be ready for ground testing at some point in 2019. Musk believes the first uncrewed BFR flight to Mars will take place as early as 2022 while crewed flights should start two years after that.

Apple's most important digital wellness feature may be reducing swipes and taps.

Making the most of iOS 12's Siri Shortcuts

So, you got your iOS 12 update. Now, download Apple’s Shortcuts app. Annoyingly, the new Siri shortcuts feature requires a new app to make the magic happen, but this could be the biggest feature for the new iOS. Not only will it use notifications to suggest actions, such as returning a missed FaceTime call or turning on Do Not Disturb before a meeting on your calendar, but you can also use the brand-new Shortcuts app to create your own customized Siri-based triggers for third-party apps. Siri’s involved, so you can do all this through voice commands or tapping through the Shortcuts app. We’ve outlined the best bits so far.

The SUV has more tech than the US law allows.

Audi rips the camouflage off its E-Tron electric SUV

Audi rips the camouflage off its E-Tron electric SUV<br />

Audi finally took the wraps off its E-Tron pure electric SUV. Starting at $74,800, the E-Tron is clearly aimed at those also considering the Jaguar I-Pace (starting at $69,500) and Tesla Model X (starting at $79,500). You know, people with lots of money. One of the coolest new features is the E-Tron's braking system. On the new Audi, there are two braking systems: The typical friction-based system that uses brake pads pressed against rotors to slow the vehicle down, and an electronic system that uses the two motors to slow the car down. Audi says that in 90 percent of typical driving, the electronic system will slow the car without the friction brakes.

Wait, are we getting a feature we actually asked for?

Twitter will revive the purely chronological timeline

Every social media app wants to massage your feed to push its algorithmically preferred posts. But Twitter has announced it’s changing course. Effective immediately, opting out of its Show the best Tweets first feature will also eliminate In case you missed it roundups and suggested tweets from people you don’t follow. Coming soon is an easily accessed switch to let users see just the most recent tweets from people they follow in reverse chronological order.

Way to get what you hoped for.

"Elon Musk falsely accused Vern Unsworth of being guilty of heinous crimes," Unsworth's lawyer said in a statement. In his lawsuit, Unsworth denies all of Musk's accusations. "Apparently angered by Mr. Unsworth's criticism of his Tube in the CNN interview, Musk embarked on a PR campaign to destroy Mr. Unsworth's reputation by publishing false and heinous accusations of criminality against him to the public," says the complaint.

A microwave, a subwoofer and an in-car gadget are reportedly on the way.

Amazon might launch eight Alexa devices this fall

Amazon is ready to drop a whole slew of new Alexa devices, and they sound interesting. CNBC reports that at least eight new devices, including a microwave oven, an amplifier, a subwoofer and some sort of in-car gadget are set to be released before the end of the year. Naturally, Alexa will be along for the ride, and we won’t have to wait long: The devices will apparently be revealed in just a few weeks.

But wait, there's more...

2. What's on TV: 'Killjoys' season finale, 'Maniac' and 'Quincy'

3. Netflix and HBO tie for Emmy wins at 23 each, 'Maisel' leads streaming shows with eight

4. Hands-on: Withings makes its comeback with the Steel HR Sport

5. Google isn't killing 'www' in Chrome just yet

6. Sinemia's $30 unlimited plan tries to fill a MoviePass-shaped hole

Editor's Pick: Blockchain (Re)Emerges

Denis Pombriant
Sep 17, 2018 11:36 AM PT
More often than you might think, disruptive innovations travel in pairs -- at least until they are separated by the markets, which decide one is useful and the other no so much. Sometimes they're symbiotic. Both may be useful or even necessary -- like hardware and software -- but that's not always the case. Consider the strange pairing of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. [More...]

There is a well-known joke among security professionals: Q: "What does IoT stand for?" A: "Internet of Threats." Sadly, this joke is our reality. An estimated 20.4 billion Internet of Things devices will be deployed by 2020, according to Gartner, in what some have dubbed "the fourth industrial revolution." These connected devices are being manufactured to streamline everything we do. [More...]

Today's Story Highlights

Death Watch Begins for Google
The EU has been stretching its wings. In the shadow of Brexit, it
apparently has decided it has the real enemy of the people in its
sights: social media companies and Google. France is even more
aggressive, suggesting that the EU's "right to be forgotten" law should
apply worldwide. Given that it actually does fall within the legitimate
purview of government, it is hard not to agree.

Google Digs In Heels Over Global Expansion of EU's 'Right to Be Forgotten'
Google took on French lawyers at the European Union Court of Justice
this week, in an effort to fend off expansion of the EU's "right to be
forgotten" judgment. The EU's attempts to broaden the scope of that
judgment would be "completely unenvisagable," and it could result in
impositions on the values of different countries around the world,
Google argued.

Apple Unveils Trio of New iPhones
Apple unveiled three new iPhones at a Wednesday in Cupertino. Along with
the iPhone Xs, iPhone Xs Max and iPhone XR, Apple introduced the Apple
Watch 4. "Our mission started with personalizing technology for the
desktop," said CEO Tim Cook, and it's "now personalizing it for every
aspect of our lives." Apple aims "to put the customer at the center of
everything we do," he added.

Sonos Welcomes Devs With Open APIs
Getting Sonos' top-shelf speakers to play nice with other connected
devices in the home has been challenging in the past, but that's about
to change. The company has announced the Sonos Sound Platform, which
includes new APIs, developer tools and documentation to make it easier
for Sonos products to operate with third-party hardware and software.
Sonos also announced integration with IFTTT.

Android Apps Riskier Than Ever: Report
Widespread use of unpatched open source code in the most popular Android
apps distributed by Google Play has caused significant security
vulnerabilities, suggests an American Consumer Institute report. Thirty-
two percent -- or 105 apps out of 330 of the most popular apps in 16
categories sampled -- averaged 19 vulnerabilities per app, according to
the report. Researchers found critical vulnerabilities in many common
applications.
