Today's Story Highlights

E-Scooters: On a Road to Nowhere
As summer winds die down here's hoping one of the season's most
ridiculous and unnecessary fads goes with them. Bird and Lime e-scooters
are just the latest twist on the foot-powered Razor Scooters that took
America by storm in 2000. Unlike Razor, which introduced electric-power
models back in 2003, Bird and Lime utilize a subscription model instead
of ownership.

Senators Bash Google at Russian Election Meddling Hearing
An empty chair reserved for Google became the focal point for harsh
criticism Wednesday at the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee's hearing
on Russian meddling in the 2016 elections. Facebook Chief Operating
Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey testified at the
forum. Several senators lambasted the absent company for being unwilling
to answer important questions.

Five Eyes Nations Push for Encryption Backdoors
Strong encryption can be a threat to law enforcement and national
security, the governments of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada,
Australia and New Zealand said in a statement issued Sunday. "The
increasing use and sophistication of certain encryption designs present
challenges for nations in combating serious crimes and threats to
national and global security," maintained the countries.

UberMedia CEO Gladys Kong: Success Is Data-Driven
"Mobile advertising and location-based marketing are getting more and
more data-driven, both in targeting and analyzing results," said
UberMedia CEO Gladys Kong. "Advertisers are trying to understand more
about the consumer's journey. They want any insights they can get their
hands on in order to understand the consumer. Location measurement is
becoming a much more important part of advertising."

Of Course Google Is Biased
I once took a market research class that focused on the identification
and elimination of bias. My final paper was on an intentionally biased
piece of research. It was far easier to introduce bias and then talk
about the bias than it would have been to attempt to do unbiased work
and defend it as unbiased. For that reason alone, it's almost certainly
true that Google's search engine is biased.

The Morning After: A dating app data breach

It's Friday, September 07, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

(View in browser.)

We’ll wrap up a short week with an appointment for Google’s Pixel 3 event next month, a smart mirror containing the trapped spirit of a fitness instructor and a gaming router you can’t blame for your K:D ratio. Oh, and whoever had yesterday in the “when will Alex Jones get banned from Twitter?” pool can contact us to collect your winnings.

International intrigue.

US charges North Korean man linked to Sony hack and WannaCry

Park Jin Hyok, a computer programmer, was sanctioned along with Korea Expo Joint Venture, an agency he allegedly worked for. The Treasury Department claims Hyok is part of a conspiracy responsible for the 2014 Sony Pictures hack, the 2016 Bangladesh Bank heist and last year's WannaCry ransomware attack.

Maybe don’t take a Lyft to the event, Google.

Google will reveal its latest Pixel phones October 9th

Google will reveal its latest Pixel phones October 9th

Google has confirmed that its upcoming hardware event will take place October 9th in New York City at 11 AM ET. The company is likely to reveal the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phones, though plenty of leaks have given us a good idea of what Google has in store for its flagship Android handset this time around.

… less than a day after Jones yelled at CEO Jack Dorsey in person.

Twitter finally bans Alex Jones

Twitter finally bans Alex Jones

A month ago, when YouTube and Facebook took action against the @RealAlexJones and @InfoWars accounts, Dorsey said: "We're going to hold Jones to the same standard we hold to every account, not taking one-off actions to make us feel good in the short term, and adding fuel to new conspiracy theories." Now, after testy confrontations on Capitol Hill, Twitter has axed both of them for good. The timing isn’t great for Twitter’s claims that it acts impartially, but that might be a good thing.

Y’all love routers.

Look at those antennas. This isn't a router you want to shove behind the TV. The $400 Archer C5400X features 1.8 GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU, three co-processors and 1 GB RAM to reach WiFi speeds up to 5400 Mbps over one 2.4 GHz (1000 Mbps) and two 5 GHz (2167 Mbps) bands. And it comes with three WiFi bands, eight Gigabit LAN ports and one Gigabit WAN port.

With Narcos: Mexico, the show moves out of Colombia and away from the Cali cartel, focusing instead on the rise of Mexico's Guadalajara cartel in the early 1980's.

Coffee Meets Bagel sent us a stranger’s information.

Data retrieval week: How a request turned into a breach

Data retrieval week: How a request turned into a breach

I emailed the dating app Coffee Meets Bagel to request personal data. Within 24 hours, the company asked for a selfie of me holding an ID card and a piece of paper with the words ‘Coffee Meets Bagel’ scrawled on it. Exactly one month later, I received an email from Stephen Brandon, the company's data-protection officer, containing a comprehensive amount of profile information.

The only problem: This was not my data.

But wait, there's more...

1. Alexa and Cortana devices can control your Xbox One by voice

2. Walmart orders 30 more Tesla Semi trucks for its fleet

3. A $1,500 smart mirror brings live fitness classes to your home

4. Amazon's newest Fire HD 8 tablet offers always-on Alexa and a better front camera

5. DJI Mavic 2 review: Two fantastic drones, one tough choice

6. A spying service leaked personal data on millions of customers

7. Lyft's first electric scooters arrive in Denver

8. Native Instruments' latest performance controllers do beats on a budget

Editor's Pick: The Thrill Is Gone for Many Facebook Users

Richard Adhikari
Sep 6, 2018 10:21 AM PT
American consumers' attitudes toward Facebook appear to be cooling, based on the results of a Pew Research Center survey. Forty-two percent of the roughly 4,600 people who responded to the May poll said they had taken a break of several weeks from checking the platform. "Facebook's probably losing subscribers for a number of reasons," said Frost & Sullivan's Michael Jude. [More...]

E-commerce continues to become more competitive as large companies like Amazon, Target and Walmart soak up market share and customer attention. Google Cracks Down on Tech-Support Scams
Google has announced new steps to combat the placement of fraudulent tech support ads on its platform. The company will roll out a verification program in the next few months to ensure that only legitimate third-party tech support providers can place Google ads. How Retailers Can Use AI to Break the Compensation Equation
Nowhere is the customer experience more vital to the long-term success of a business than in retail. This is particularly evident as retailers work to ensure that brick-and-mortar shopping experiences are as seamless and personalized as those offered by their digital counterparts. Nearly 80 percent of Americans are now online shoppers, according to Pew Research Center findings. [More...]
