Nowhere is the customer experience more vital to the long-term success of a business than in retail. This is particularly evident as retailers work to ensure that brick-and-mortar shopping experiences are as seamless and personalized as those offered by their digital counterparts. Nearly 80 percent of Americans are now online shoppers, according to Pew Research Center findings. [More...]

UberMedia CEO Gladys Kong: Success Is Data-Driven
"Mobile advertising and location-based marketing are getting more and more data-driven, both in targeting and analyzing results," said UberMedia CEO Gladys Kong. Location measurement is becoming a much more important part of advertising." [More...]
Of Course Google Is Biased
I once took a market research class that focused on the identification and elimination of bias. My final paper was on an intentionally biased piece of research. It was far easier to introduce bias and then talk about the bias than it would have been to attempt to do unbiased work and defend it as unbiased. For that reason alone, it's almost certainly true that Google's search engine is biased. [More...]

A Model-Based Structure May Be Ideal in a Data-Driven World
Data science has become mission-critical to many enterprises. Companies in the U.S. will spend billions on third-party audience data in 2018 and even more on third-party solutions to use that data, as they move toward becoming model-driven. It's not just a matter of harvesting data and then crunching it; companies have to map data against their business model in order to get the most out of it. [More...]

The Morning After: 8K hype, liquid-printed drugs and e-skates

It's Tuesday, September 04, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

(View in browser.)

Welcome back to those returning from a long weekend! Now that IFA 2018 is over, we’re sifting through the information to figure out what’s really going on with extra-large 8K TVs, extra-small smartphones and everything else in between.

IFA FOMO.

Here are all the new phones at IFA that you won't get in the US

Here are all the new phones at IFA that you won't get in the US

There are phones in other countries that offer advanced features like in-screen fingerprint readers, and we're expecting them to arrive in the US soon. Granted, the phones we saw at IFA weren't groundbreaking flagship devices, but it's still worth noting what we're missing out on.

Super Hi-Vision goggles.

8K TVs are coming, but ignore the hype

8K TVs are coming, but ignore the hype

It's like a flashback to the early days of 4K in 2013 -- all of a sudden the video format we've been hearing about for years is finally gearing up to reach consumers. Samsung is planning to actually sell its 8K QLED TV; LG gave us a glimpse at the world's first 8K OLED TV. But is this actually a huge leap beyond 4K? That's where things get complicated.

Plus a slew of indie games like ‘Hyper Light Drifter’ on Switch.

What's on TV: 'Spider-Man,' 'Next Gen' and 'The Purge'

What's on TV: 'Spider-Man,' 'Next Gen' and 'The Purge'

For gamers, it's a big week as Spider-Man is released on PS4, Destiny 2 gets a big DLC expansion and NBA Live 19 goes head-to-head with NBA 2K19. Netflix has its animated robot film Next Gen as well as the premiere of Iron Fist season two, but you should also check out Sierra Burgess is a Loser. It features two familiar faces from other Netflix releases: Noah Centineo from the recent rom-com To All The Boys I've Loved Before and Shannon Purser, who played Barb in season one of Stranger Things.

Don’t confuse it with Android Go.

A proper explanation of Google’s Android One program

A proper explanation of Google’s Android One program

Remember a time when phones would sometimes come in a Play Edition variant that ran stock Android? The Android One program is somewhat similar to that, except Google is far more involved.

As bezels fade out, manufacturers are shifting to larger sizes.

Will 2018 be the year small phones die?

Will 2018 be the year small phones die?

Sony’s missing XZ3 Compact highlights a worrying trend for fans of smaller phones.

But wait, there's more...

1. Segway's Drift e-skates aren't nearly as dangerous as they look

2. US, UK and other Five Eyes countries push for mandatory access to encrypted data

3. Google offers AI toolkit to report child sex abuse images

4. UK broadcasters urge the government to create a social-media watchdog

5. Sound-based liquid printing could lead to new designer drugs

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.

AI May Help Keep Top Sales Talent on Board
Much of the discussion around sales and artificial intelligence has been outwardly focused. It's exciting to think about using AI to examine leads, sift through data, and help deliver answers that allow salespeople to close more and bigger deals. However, the excitement over using AI to organize customer information overshadows another use of AI that could be equally lucrative. [More...]
Enlightenment Has Limits in Bodhi Linux
Bodhi Linux is an alternative to traditional Linux OSes that can change your desktop user experience. It is one of a very few Linux distros using Moksha, a forked version of the Enlightenment desktop. Enlightenment is a Compositing Window Manager and Desktop Shell. It is radically different from other lightweight interface shells such as Xfce and LXDE. [More...]
