Today's Story Highlights

Software Providers Scramble to Satisfy World's Largest IT Customer
In the competitive IT world, vendors must be alert to major changes
within the potential customer base. The U.S. government increasingly has
been using its status as the world's single largest IT customer to
acquire products and services at competitively favorable costs. U.S.
government spending for a combination of legacy IT operations and new
projects has reached some $90 billion annually.

User Experiences That Convert - The Do's and Don'ts
In tech parlance, the emotional result of a person's interaction with a
website or digital app is called "user experience" or "UX" -- and the
success of a business depends on it. Users who have easy, positive
experiences with websites and apps likely will be drawn back to the
business. On the contrary, websites and apps with poor navigation and
slow loading times likely will turn off consumers.

Pulling a Thread
There's an emerging theme in sales and marketing that I expect could
influence some of the messaging associated with upcoming events like
Salesforce's Dreamforce and Oracle's OpenWorld. Each company will have
lots to say about security, analytics and machine learning, the IoT, and
blockchain, but what's under the radar is the practical application of
much of this to marketing and sales.

From Browser to Buyer: How Smart Solutions Are Transforming E-Commerce
Shopping: It's not what it once was. Forget the long drive to the mall
and countless hours of browsing. Customers now simply log in from the
comfort of their own home to have the world at their fingertips. The
massive uptake of e-commerce is an unprecedented shift in consumer
behavior, expectations and purchases. The evidence is clear: Internet
shopping is the most popular online activity.

Ad Targeting Tool Leverages Real-World Relationships to Influence Buying Decisions
AdTheorent, which offers a machine learning platform for advertisers,
has announced AdTheorent Relationship Targeting. This new product allows
advertisers to harness the power of relationships with family members,
cohabitants or friends to influence a consumer to take desired actions.
Word of mouth is the primary factor behind 20-50 percent of all
purchasing decisions, AdTheorent noted.

Mobile App Financing Startup Gets $6M Helping Hand
Braavo Capital announced it has raised $6 million in Series A funding,
and converted $2 million in seed capital from investors, bringing the
total equity raised to date to nearly $8 million. Braavo, which claims
to be the first company to offer Capital as a Service to mobile app
entrepreneurs and developers, will use the funds to add personnel to
further its mission.

The Morning After: Vespa's first electric scooter and 'Streets of Rage 4'

It's Tuesday, August 28, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

On Monday Microsoft confirmed its (nearly) all-inclusive Xbox package, and we took the better part of an hour to appreciate some Cyberpunk 2077 footage. Also, Streets of Rage is coming back for more.

Welcome to gaming as a service.

Microsoft launches Xbox All Access with two-year console financing

Microsoft launches Xbox All Access with two-year console financing

For $22 per month over two years, Microsoft will provide you with an Xbox One S console, access to over 100 games thanks to Xbox Game Pass and an Xbox Live Gold subscription. If you want an Xbox One X, then you'll shell out $35 per month. It's a financing program, rather than a subscription service, which means that you'll sign up for a two-year contract and then get to keep the console at the end of the period.

The new thriller starring John Cho and directed by Aneesh Chaganty deftly shows how “Screenlife” films can be genuinely cinematic.

Kick the can down the road again.

Judge extends ban on publication of 3D-printed gun designs

Judge extends ban on publication of 3D-printed gun designs

A federal judge in Seattle issued an injunction that blocks Defense Distributed from publishing its 3D-printed gun designs online. The move extends a temporary ban issued last month, and the injunction will remain in place until a lawsuit brought forth by a number of state attorneys general is resolved.  US District Judge Robert Lasnik said in his ruling that the plaintiffs' argument that the State Department didn't follow the correct procedure when making changes to the US Munitions List per its settlement with Defense Distributed has merit.

Watch an extended cut of 'Cyberpunk 2077' gameplay

This 48-minute video walks viewers through the twists and turns of following a job from start to finish. Cyberpunk 2077 shows off a gritty future, but not totally dark. As seen in the E3 trailer, some of the gameplay occurred during the daytime, which doesn't diminish the cyberpunk feel: When the player-character yanks a cable from their wrist to jack into someone's brainstem or sits in a biohacker's chair to replace body parts with cyber-enhanced upgrades, the setting lives up to the game's name.

Just open the app and take a picture.

Google Gboard can use selfies to create a 'Mini' version of you

Google Gboard can use selfies to create a 'Mini' version of you

Google has launched "Mini" stickers for iOS and Android, which use machine learning to craft personalized emoji from your photo. More precisely, the feature uses a combination of machine learning, neural networks and artist illustrations to conjure up the best representation of you, taking into account various characteristics like your skin tone, hair color and style, eye color, face shape and facial hair.

More animated series for adults are on the way.

Netflix signs 'Gravity Falls' creator Alex Hirsch

Netflix has signed a multi-year deal with yet another show creator, demonstrating its continued push for more originals on its platform. This time, the streaming service has inked a contract with Alex Hirsch, known for creating the mystery animated series Gravity Falls for Disney.

Expect a lot of punching and chicken dinners.

'Streets of Rage 4' revives Sega's beat 'em up classic

'Streets of Rage 4' revives Sega's beat 'em up classic

Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games and Dotemu have unveiled Streets of Rage 4, a proper sequel with updated mechanics, a "fresh story" and, naturally, plenty of thugs to thrash. The developers are saying precious little beyond that, but you can play two-player co-op (as either Axel Stone or Blaze Fielding) -- and it's evident the art has taken a big step forward thanks to 24 years of technological progress.

But wait, there's more...

1. Oculus founder calls Magic Leap headset a 'tragic heap'

2. Vespa's first electric scooter goes on sale in Europe this October

3. A new Nokia PureView phone could be on the horizon

4. The Big Picture: NASA's terrifying visualization of atmospheric aerosols

5. EA cancels Madden Classic qualifier events after Jacksonville shooting

6. Toyota will invest $500 million in Uber as the two join forces on self-driving cars

7. Tumblr revamps its rules to clamp down on hate and violence

Editor's Pick: What If Electric Cars Fail Again?

Rob Enderle
Aug 27, 2018 11:05 AM PT
If Tesla should go under, it would set back the electric car industry a decade or more. Early in the last century, electric, steam and gas all competed for the automotive industry, resulting in far more advancements in gas cars than electric over the decades. Thankfully, no one has brought back steam. Some recent breakthroughs actually could make gas cars more efficient than many electrics. [More...]
