Today's Story Highlights

The Two Sides of the Artificial Intelligence Coin
The growth of artificial intelligence in recent years has been
astounding -- yet AI is still in the very early stages of growth. Where
are we today with this new technology, and where are we heading? Which
companies are struggling, and why? What's coming next? AI for years has
been a staple of science fiction. Now AI has moved beyond sci-fi and
become real, with all sorts of technologies.

Sugar's New Shot Clock
SugarCRM has agreed to acquisition by Accel-KKR, a leading technology-
focused private equity firm. Although the announcement calls the deal "a
significant investment," what typically happens when private equity
moves in is that venture capital moves out. Private equity likes to own
everything and thus have greater control. In basketball terms, Sugar
just got a big rebound and a new shot clock.

Square's Cash App Supports Bitcoin in All US States
Square on Monday announced that Cash App users could buy and sell
bitcoin in all 50 U.S. states. Square began testing Cash App's bitcoin
purchasing option last fall and officially launched the option early
this year. However, it was not available in four states -- New York,
Georgia, Hawaii and Wyoming -- because of their more restrictive
regulation of bitcoin transactions.

JEDI Mind Games
During the same week it was sued by irate investors over progress moving
its customer base to the cloud, Oracle protested a procurement process
for the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure. The lawsuit will take a
long time to resolve, and it's difficult to see how the plaintiffs can
prove their case -- but in comparison, the Department of Defense's
procurement will run at light speed.

Def Con Voting Machine Hacks Ruffle Feathers
Hackers cracked into a wide array of voting equipment Def Con's Voting
Village, an event held Friday at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Last year, conference goers hacked five machines and an e-poll book of
registered voters. This year, in addition to voting machines, tabulators
and smart card readers were available for hacking. Websites weren't off
limits, either.

Today's Story Highlights

Alexa and Cortana: Two AI Heads May Be Better Than One
Microsoft and Amazon have released a public preview of the integration
of their Cortana and Alexa voice assistants. Cortana will be available
on amazon Echo devices, while Alexa will be available on Windows 10
devices and on Harman Kardon Invoke speakers. "Our ongoing goal has been
to make Cortana your intelligent assistant, wherever you need
assistance," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

Nvidia's Turing Chip Opens Door to New Virtual Reality Realm
Nvidia has announced a powerful new graphics architecture with the
potential to blur the line between virtual and actual reality. Nvidia
CEO Jensen Huang unveiled the new chips at the company's SIGGRAPH 2018
event in Vancouver, Canada. The Turing architecture enables a new
generation of hybrid rendering that can be used to create cinematic-
quality interactive experiences.

Farsight Security COO Alexa Raad: 'Be Your Own Champion'
"If you think about Internet threats like phishing and botnets and
malware -- all of those start with a DNS -- a domain name system. And so
every kind of nefarious act leaves footprints and fingerprints in the
DNS. That's something that cannot be faked," said Farsight Security COO
Alexa Raad. For example, "a lot of the new domain names that are
registered are typically registered with bad intent."

The Weird Mistakes Killing Tesla
Tesla is trending to fail spectacularly. It has been burning cash at an
unsustainable rate, and it keeps making avoidable mistakes that weaken
it. Here's what is weird: You'd think the firm's biggest problem would
be that every large car maker was working behind the scenes to kill it.
However, the car companies for the most part appear to have worked
harder to emulate Tesla than to destroy it.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/85498.html

At-Home Eldercare Goes High Tech
The call came in less than an hour before the 8 a.m. shift was scheduled
to start: A family emergency meant the regular caregiver for an elderly
client couldn't make her shift that day, so a replacement caregiver was
needed ASAP. Homewatch CareGivers of San Juan Capistrano had to quickly
send a substitute from its pool of licensed, trained and security-bonded
caregivers.

It's Thursday, August 16, 2018.

Hey, good morning!

We’re delivering our verdict on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in our full review, elaborate on MoviePass’ continued woes and tell you the best VR headsets for your back-to-school dollars.

Bigger and more useful than before.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 review: A better Note for most of us

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 review: A better Note for most of us

Need a new big phone? Samsung continues its nearly spotless history of delivering excellent big-screen phones with the Note 9. It offers powerful performance, a long-lasting battery and a brilliant display. The cameras aren’t the best in class, but the Note 9 still takes great photos, and the new S Pen remote controls make the stylus useful for more than just doodles. This is hands-down one of the best phones of the year.

Because nerds love cats.

We’ve reported on hacker conference Def Con’s rich unofficial badge culture a few times, and Roberto Baldwin was determined to move past his infatuation with blinking lights and colorful PCBs this year. Then he saw the Maneki Neko badge. Game over.

'Duck Season,' anyone?

No, the Intuition Pro can’t 'enhance' your intuition

Intuition isn't something that's simple to observe, but one company claims its device can measure it, and actually enhance it. Jamie Rigg tests out the Intuition Pro, which records galvanic skin response (GSR), the electrical conductivity of your skin, and attempts to present it as a measure of your intuition in action. It doesn’t really deliver on its promises, however.
