Today's Story Highlights

E-Sports Pioneers Are Making It Up as They Go
A major "sporting event" aired on ESPN, Disney XD and ABC last weekend.
It wasn't the recently completed FIFA World Cup, the finale of the Tour
de France or the MLB All-Star Game. It was the Overwatch League Grand
Finals -- the biggest e-sports championship to date. Much of the
competition was "broadcast" via the online service Twitch, but on July
11 the Overwatch League announced a new deal.

Kroger Gets Into Online Grocery Shopping Act
The Kroger Co. has launched Kroger Ship, a direct-to-consumer e-commerce
platform. Ship debuted in four markets: Cincinnati; Houston; Louisville,
Kentucky; and Nashville, Tennessee. The service will be rolled out to
additional markets over the next few months. During the first phase of
Kroger Ship, customers will be able to shop from a curated selection of
thousands of products.

DoD Launches JEDI Program Amid Cloud Provider Criticism
The U.S. Department of Defense has decided to bet on the cloud for much
of its future information technology operations -- presenting
significant opportunities for cloud service providers and related IT
suppliers. However, DoD's latest foray into cloud technology has
stimulated significant criticism. DoD released its final RFP for the
JEDI program last week.

Slide Over, Salesforce? Freshworks Scores $100M in Funding Round
Freshworks has secured $100 million in funding from Accel and Sequoia
Capital India with the participation of CapitalG. That brings the total
amount of capital raised since the firm's 2010 launch to $250 million.
"The new funding will be used to invest in our platform and to continue
scaling internationally," said Arvind Parthiban, Freshworks' director of
marketing.

IBM, CLS Launch Blockchain Platform for Banks
IBM and currency trading utility CLS have announced a new platform that
enables financial institutions to deploy, share and consume services on
a hosted blockchain network. Nine financial institutions have agreed to
participate in the initial launch of the platform, which is sort of an
app store for solutions that use distributed ledger technology, also
known as "blockchain."

Wheat and Chaff
I fear CRM could be tainted by the failings of social media and the bad
actors who exploited social platforms. Today it seems especially
important for CRM to separate itself from the worst aspects of social to
the extent that we can. There's certainly a lot to say -- from
continuing to talk about the care we take of customer data to explicitly
renouncing some of the tactics.

How to Plan Your E-Commerce and SEO Migration
So you've just migrated your e-commerce platform. A few weeks into the
launch, you discover something shocking: Despite performing technical
due diligence, hiring the best development agency, and spending a
fortune on the migration, your traffic and Google rankings have dropped
significantly. If this sounds familiar, you'll want to keep reading for
a summary of 12 critical tasks to be implemented.

How Online Businesses Must Comply With New California, EU Privacy Laws
Governor Jerry Brown last month signed into law the California Consumer
Privacy Act. The CCPA is the state's response to a growing concern that
consumers need stronger means to protect their personal information. The
issue came to a head in part due to recent breaches that exposed the
personal data of millions of American consumers. However, the CCPA also
addresses other privacy incidents.

The Morning After: Our verdict on Microsoft's Surface Go

It's Friday, August 03, 2018.

Hey, good morning!

Yes, Friday! We spent yesterday ziplining while wearing VR headsets, explaining the trillion-dollar business that is Apple and giving our verdict on Motorola’s long-running modular phone experiment. Oh and there’s a blind Call of Duty player that’s probably better than you.

That's a lot of iPhones.

Apple is now a $1 trillion company

Apple is now a $1 trillion company
Apple hit a new milestone: It's the first publicly traded trillion-dollar American company. Yesterday the firm announced an adjusted (higher) share count, and by this morning the stock price rose, ensuring the company hit that trillion-dollar mark in value.

The ideal cheap Windows tablet... almost

Surface Go review

Surface Go review

The Surface Go is the first Surface that can actually take on the iPad, says Senior Editor Devindra Hardawar. It's impressively thin and light, while also being a fully-fledged Windows PC. Unfortunately, slow hardware means you can't stress it too much, and Windows still faces the challenge of not having enough compelling tablet apps.

The proposed policy would significantly curtail emission goals.

Trump administration reveals plans to roll back vehicle fuel standards

Earlier this year, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it wanted to roll back vehicle-efficiency standards, and today the Trump administration revealed its plan to do so. Previous policies stated automakers have until 2025 to get their average fuel efficiencies for passenger vehicles to over 50 miles per gallon, but the new rules would freeze standards after 2021, and average fuel-efficiency requirements would then remain around 37 miles per gallon.

Ziplining and VR headsets make a weird couple

Ziplining and VR headsets make a weird couple
Perhaps there'll never be one killer use for VR, but some of the more unusual experimentations mix the virtual world with the real. Arguably a step beyond VR roller coasters, one zip line in the UK is strapping headsets to its customers for a 90-second ride. We had to try it.

Now, what's your excuse?

How a blind 'Call of Duty' player is racking up thousands of kills

How a blind 'Call of Duty' player is racking up thousands of kills
A gamer took to Reddit last week to boast about scoring more than 7,500 lifetime kills in the first-person shooter Call of Duty: WWII. The twist? He’s done it entirely without eyesight. He goes by the handle 'tj_the_blind_gamer' and uploads gameplay to his YouTube channel, which he created after discovering there weren't any other sightless Call of Duty streamers. He plays for his own enjoyment -- but streams it to show the world that blind gamers are out there, racking up kills. Here’s how.

But wait, there's more...

1. FCC loosens utility pole rules to accelerate 5G rollouts

2. South Korea wants to tax global companies like Apple and Google

3. Motorola's smartphone Mods weren't the game-changers we hoped for

4. Get your own HAL-9000 replica with Bluetooth and voice command

5. Comcast will add Prime Video to Xfinity X1

Kris Holt
Aug 2, 2018 5:00 AM PT
We've all been there: scrolling through a seemingly never-ending carousel of shows and movies available on Netflix, trying to find the one thing we might want to sit down and enjoy.
