Today's Story Highlights

How a Newsletter Can Boost Your Business
Newsletters are one of the primary means of communicating with both
existing and potential customers. For small e-commerce business owners,
however, putting together a regular newsletter may seem daunting. It
might seem that creating and sending out a newsletter would involve
spending more time and energy than you have, taking valuable resources
away from sales and marketing.

The IoT's Perplexing Security Problems
Worldwide IoT spending will total nearly $773 billion this year, IDC has
predicted. The IoT will sustain a compound annual growth rate of 14.4
percent, and spending will hit $1.1 trillion by 2021, according to the
firm's forecast. Consumer IoT spending will total $62 billion this year,
making it the fourth largest industry segment, after manufacturing,
transportation and utilities.

Breach Litigation: A Growing Risk for E-Commerce Businesses
The expanding world of Internet commerce likely will generate a
corresponding expansion of data breaches, resulting in more e-commerce
businesses becoming the targets of consumer class action lawsuits.
Breach litigation has become more prevalent as a result of a perceptible
legal trend favoring consumers. Courts have tended to allow lawsuits
based on a lower threshold for establishing injury.

Zuora at a Crossroads
Zuora's recent Subscribed user conference was a good first outing since
the company's IPO, coming off some impressive first-quarter results.
Year-over-year subscription revenues grew 39 percent and total revenue
grew an amazing 60 percent, for example. As good as its present
situation is, now that Zuora is a public company, it has to push down
the gas pedal to feed the insatiable stock market.

The Morning After: Another all-screen phone

Engadget Email Newsletter

It's Wednesday, June 20, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

In case you needed another sign that we’re at the height of this console cycle, Sony is rolling out a greatest hits lineup for the PS4. At the same time, GameStop is looking over its options, and Google finally has a podcast app for Android.

(View in browser.)

We’ll give them $4.50 cash and five dollars in store credit.

GameStop confirms buyout talks as downloads take their toll

GameStop confirms buyout talks as downloads take their toll

In the wake of a Reuters leak, GameStop has confirmed it's in talks about a "potential transaction." While the retail chain is shy about what those discussions involve and isn't promising a deal, the sources claimed the chats were in response to "buyout interest" from private equity companies like Sycamore Partners.

Interesting.

Porsche invests in EV supercar-maker Rimac

Porsche invests in EV supercar-maker Rimac

Just recently, luxury automaker Porsche teased its electric Mission E sports car, showing its shadowy silhouette that's not unlike its other non-EV cars. Now, the company has shown it's getting even more serious about electric vehicles and its Mission E development by teaming up with EV supercar-maker Rimac, creator of the Concept Two electric hypercar.

You can uninstall Listen.

Google’s dedicated podcast app for Android is here

Google’s dedicated podcast app for Android is here

After soft-launching as a web app linked to Google Search, there’s finally a Google-made podcast player for Android again (after it abandoned the Reader-linked Listen app years ago). Google Podcasts works across not just phones but on all devices Google Assistant can reach. Right now, it’s fairly basic, but the company is promising AI-driven enhancements including transcription and, of course, suggestions.

Enjoy some big names you missed the first time around.

Some of the most popular PS4 titles now cost just $20

Some of the most popular PS4 titles now cost just $20

In keeping with the tradition set on its previous consoles, Sony has introduced a selection of best-selling PS4 games for a discount. 'PlayStation Hits' will offer titles like Metal Gear Solid V, Doom, Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 for $20. The game line will be available online and in stores -- just look for the red banner at the top of the box.

Another truly all-screen phone?

Oppo's all-screen Find X hides a pop-up selfie camera

Oppo's all-screen Find X hides a pop-up selfie camera

Like Vivo and the Nex, Oppo has decided to go notchless with its new flagship phone. The Find X tucks a motorized slide-out camera for selfies, face unlocking and Omoji behind its curved 6.4-inch 1080p display. The best news, though? This device is coming to North America.

It’s listening.

Amazon launches Alexa for hotels

Amazon launches Alexa for hotels

Visitors to Marriott hotels will soon be able to use Amazon Alexa to make their stays more enjoyable. Alexa for Hospitality lets guests ask Alexa -- via an in-room Amazon Echo -- for help with hotel information, booking guest services, playing music and managing room controls, such as lighting and temperature. Alexa for Hospitality will eventually allow guests to temporarily connect their Amazon account to the Echo in their room so they can play their own music from services including Amazon Music and Spotify, or listen to audiobooks via Audible. When they check out, their account will be automatically disconnected from the device.

But wait, there's more...

1. Adobe's new all-in-one video-editing tool will work across devices

2. Fraudster caught using OPM hack data from 2015

3. Apple hit with $6.6 million fine in Australia over 'Error 53' fiasco

4. Wear OS watches get (slightly) useful interactive faces with 'Facer'

5. The 'Fortnite'-sized 'PUBG' map goes live Friday

6. Four 'Star Trek' series are in the works from 'Discovery' showrunner

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.

Today's Story Highlights

iOS 12 to Provide Stronger 911 Location Help
iOS 12 automatically will share location data for iPhones used to make
emergency calls. The system will use an IP-based data pipeline developed
by RapidSOS to share location data from iPhones with 911 centers.
"Communities rely on 911 centers in an emergency, and we believe they
should have the best available technology at their disposal," said Apple
CEO Tim Cook.

Can Hackers Crack the Ivory Towers?
Academics have been hard at work studying information security. Most
fields aren't as replete with hackers as information security, though,
and their contributions are felt much more strongly in the private
sector than in academia. The differing motives and professional cultures
of the two groups act as barriers to direct collaboration, noted
CypherCon presenter Anita Nikolich.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/85398.html

Cisco, Dell, and the Race to Make a Better World
To say we live in troubled times would be an understatement. It often
feels like the politicians and executives who surround us are interested
only in who can tell the biggest whopper while lining their own pockets
and leaving their constituents and customers to pay the bills. I
recently read that the real reason Jon Stewart stepped down from The
Daily Show was that he was incredibly angry all the time.

Upcoming iOS Access Restrictions Could Stymie Law Enforcement
Apple plans to equip iOS 12 with USB Restricted Mode, which requires
users to unlock their iPhone with their passcode before USB accessories
can connect if the phone last was unlocked more than an hour earlier.
The company included this feature in the developer versions of iOS
11.4.1 and iOS 12. Apple will release USB Restricted Mode publicly in a
future software update, it confirmed this week.
