It's Friday, May 18, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Friday has arrived. Take a minute and find out what’s going on in Fortnite this weekend, plus some new details about Elon Musk’s Hyperloop plan.

Test rides in LA coming soon.

Elon Musk pitches 150 MPH rides in Boring Company tunnels for $1

Elon Musk pitches 150 MPH rides in Boring Company tunnels for $1

We finally heard more about Elon Musk’s vision of Hyperloop transport, with tunnels underneath and between major cities. The Boring Company thinks it can manage a $1 fare for rides in shuttles that travel up to 150 MPH between destinations in LA, carrying passengers from LAX to downtown in less than eight minutes. While that’s all still in the future, something closer is the arrival of Boring Company flamethrowers -- buyers should expect deliveries to start in about two weeks.

Expect more news about a new competitive mode next week.

‘Fortnite’ adds first taste of ranked play with 'Solo Showdown'

‘Fortnite’ adds first taste of ranked play with 'Solo Showdown'

The Solo Showdown mode started yesterday morning and runs until 10 AM EST on Monday. The best player will take away 50,000 V-Bucks, the game's currency for cosmetic items, and top-100 finishers will claim virtual prizes, too. There's no skill-based matchmaking here, so you might find yourself battling with top Fortnite streamers like Ninja, Myth and DrLupo.

YouTube Red, Music, Premium and Music Premium.

A banned CFC is destroying the ozone and nobody can find its source

Scientists spent years campaigning for a ban on the ozone-damaging chemical CFC-11, but 30 years after it was phased out in the 1987 Montreal Protocol, someone somewhere is breaking the rules. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, emissions of the banned chemical are on the rise, climbing 25 percent since 2012.

We’ll see if this change gets delayed or rolled back.

Chrome is killing its 'secure' URL label in September

Chrome is killing its 'secure' URL label in September

Chrome Security Product Manager Emily Schechter announced that Chrome 69, which will be available in September, will stop marking HTTPS sites as secure on the address bar. Why? Well, because Google wants the default state to be secure. Instead, the usually gray ‘Not Secure’ warning will flash red as soon as you start typing in data on HTTP pages.

But of course it has battle royale.

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ ditches the campaign mode

‘Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’ ditches the campaign mode

"Black Ops 4 doesn't have a traditional campaign, we're weaving narrative into each of the modes," said Mark Lamia, Treyarch chairman, during today's announcement stream. That includes popular modes like Zombies, while specialized player classes also have more variation this time around. Check out the trailer for more details.

But wait, there's more...

1. Chinese school uses facial recognition to make kids pay attention

2. 'Sense8' finale trailer is full of bonding and bullets

3. Intel finally made a 10nm processor

4. RED's Hydrogen One will be available from AT&T and Verizon this summer

5. Nissan follows Tesla with an all-in-one solar-storage package

6. 'No Man's Sky Next' will come to Xbox One, PS4 and PC July 24th

7. Amazon snags Jordan Peele-produced Nazi hunter series

8. 'Halo: Fireteam Raven' brings its co-op action to the arcade

Today's Story Highlights

Budget-Friendly Surface Tablet May Horn In on iPad's Turf
Microsoft plans to release a line of Surface tablets priced in the $400
range later this year, according to a report. The tablets are expected
to have 10-inch screens and rounded edges, and USB-C connectivity -- a
first in Microsoft tablets. They will be about 20 percent lighter than
the Surface Pros, and their battery life will be about four hours shy of
the 13.5-inch Surface Pro.

How to Back Up iPhone Data to an External Drive
A recent incident reminded me of the importance of backing up one's
phone regularly. Soon after carrying my recycling out to the curbside, I
realized I had misplaced my 6-month-old iPhone. Cue brief panic,
followed by deep concern that I'd somehow tossed my device into that
transparent bag I'd left outside for the world to see. That led me to
yelling "Hey, Siri" until the familiar chime sounded.

Highly Sensitive Encrypted Email at Risk of Exposure
A newfound flaw in email clients that use PGP and S/MIME to encrypt
messages can be exploited to expose the plain text of the missives,
according to a new paper. By injecting malicious snippets of text into
encrypted messages, attackers can use the flaw to make the email client
exfiltrate decrypted copies of the emails, explained the authors, a team
of researchers from three European universities.

Open Source Is Everywhere and So Are Vulnerabilities, Says Black Duck Report
Black Duck by Synopsys has released the 2018 Open Source Security and
Risk Analysis report, which details new concerns about software
vulnerabilities amid a surge in the use of open source components in
both proprietary and open source software. The report provides an in-
depth look at the state of open source security, license compliance and
code-quality risk in commercial software.

Tech Career Checklist: Aggressive Diversity, Cold Cash
I've become convinced that too many of us don't prioritize our
employment choices properly. What recently drew my attention to this was
a conversation I had with Dell's CFO Tom Sweet at Dell Technology World.
We were chatting about Dell's problem attracting employees. Because Dell
is a private company, few employees get stock or stock options -- they
get cash instead. It seems that has put Dell at a disadvantage when
competing for top folks.

The Morning After: The OnePlus 6 and what's next for net neutrality

It's Thursday, May 17, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

The OnePlus 6 is here! Check out our impressions below, but first take a look at Microsoft’s new Xbox One controller that focuses on accessibility, and find out what’s going on in the battle to save Net Neutrality.

What you need to know and which products to look for.

How to buy an HDR monitor

How to buy an HDR monitor

Monitors are already a confusing product category, and throwing in HDR, with its multiple standards and configurations, doesn't help. However, the benefits of HDR -- more accurate colors and a wider gamut, extra brightness and improved blacks -- are worth it, arguably more so than the resolution gain offered by 4K.

With a bonus appearance from Yanni.

Why everyone seems to care so much about ‘laurel’ vs. ‘yanny’

We know why some people heard the word ‘laurel’ or ‘yanny’ in a recent viral clip, but why did anyone care? It turns out, we just can’t resist innocuous questions with inexplicable answers.

A plug-and-play option for disabled gamers.

Xbox Adaptive Controller first look

Xbox Adaptive Controller first look

Three years ago, Microsoft targeted hardcore gamers with the release of its customizable Elite controller for the Xbox One. That process unintentionally cleared the way for the Xbox Adaptive Controller, the latest and most disparate evolution of its gamepad line. The controller itself is a clean white rectangle, about 11 inches long and six inches wide, with two large black buttons on its face. The buttons aren't touchpads, but they are light-touch enabled, clicking down with the softest of taps so players can roll their palm between the two or otherwise click them without exerting much force.

On to the House.

Senate barely passes resolution to restore Net Neutrality

Senate barely passes resolution to restore Net Neutrality

A spirited campaign by Democratic lawmakers to save Net Neutrality has passed the Senate, moving one step closer to forestalling its scheduled demise on June 11th. In addition to every Democrat supporting the legislation, the final 52-47 tally featured three Republican legislators, Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and John Kennedy (R-LA), voting in favor of the bill. Now it’s time for a similar vote in the House of Representatives, but as Mallory Locklear explains, the battle there will be even tougher.

And YouTube Red is going away.

YouTube Music subscriptions will finally debut next week

YouTube Music subscriptions will finally debut next week

On May 22nd, YouTube will finally launch its new music service. Its app focuses on adaptability and personalization, but after the new service launches, new customers will have to pay $2 extra for access to original TV shows and movies as YouTube Red becomes YouTube Premium.

Universes collide for a crossover event.

Engadget and Silica Magazine are partnering for a week-long takeover

Engadget and Silica Magazine are partnering for a week-long takeover

From May 21st to May 25th, Engadget will run five stories produced by Silica Mag. Through the week-long takeover, we invite you to explore the questions: How is life defined in a world dominated by human technology? How are we changing it? How is it changing us? And what is happening to life on this planet in all of its natural, artificial and liminal states?

Slick looks come at a higher price.

OnePlus 6 hands-on

OnePlus 6 hands-on

OnePlus just unveiled its most expensive phone to date, with a base price starting at $529 to make up for the extra work put into its gorgeous glass design. The specs have been upgraded as well, and we have a breakdown ready to show how the OnePlus 6 compares to the 5T. When you’re done with that, check out our first impression of the new Bullets Wireless earbuds. Oh, and there’s even an Avengers edition.

But wait, there's more...

1. Bloomberg: Microsoft may release a lower-cost Surface tablet this year

2. Google's AI-powered News app arrives on iOS

3. Whistleblower: Cambridge Analytica couldn't work with Democrats

4. Sinemia takes on MoviePass with subscription plans for two

5. Acura skips the touchscreen for its infotainment system

6. Onkyo's high-end receivers will link up with Sonos

7. Regulation has helped, not hindered California's green economy
