Today's Story Highlights

Zuckerberg Bobs, Weaves at Senate Hearing
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg conceded that the company failed to inform
the FTC that Cambridge Analytica had gained improper access to personal
data belonging to millions of Facebook members, despite its 2011
settlement with the commission over earlier complaints of unauthorized
data sharing. Zuckerberg made the admission at a joint hearing of the
U.S. Senate Commerce and Judiciary Committees.

Model-Based Structure: Key to Success in a Data-Driven World
Data science has become mission-critical to many enterprises. Companies
in the U.S. will spend billions on third-party audience data in 2018 and
even more on third-party solutions to use that data, as they move toward
becoming model-driven. It's not just a matter of harvesting data and
then crunching it; companies have to map data against their business
model in order to get the most out of it.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85263.html

Beyond CRM
We should start discussing what's beyond CRM. I chose the word "beyond"
advisedly. CRM is far from dead or even in decline, so "after" would be
incorrect. However, CRM already has changed so much that it may be time
to rethink it. Also, many of the tangential technologies that have
turbocharged CRM in the last few years, like social media, have drawn so
much attention that some analysis is due.

Mysterious Disappearance of Zuck Posts Rings Another Facebook Alarm Bell
Facebook reportedly allowed CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other senior
executives to delete messages from recipients' inboxes and chat threads,
but it did not disclose the practice or offer the same capabilities to
users. Facebook began using the tool after the 2014 hack of Sony
Pictures to protect executive communications. Facebook later said it
would make the feature available to all users.

The Morning After: Facebook at the Senate, Intel's tiny yet powerful PC

It's Wednesday, April 11, 2018.

Hey, good morning!

All things Facebook as Mark Zuckerberg faces tough questions. We also test out a tiny PC gaming powerhouse from Intel, see the rebirth of the PDA that no-one someone wanted and much more.

It’s uncharted territory for mini-desktops.

Intel’s Hades Canyon NUC is a tiny gaming powerhouse

Intel’s Hades Canyon NUC is a tiny gaming powerhouse
Intel’s Hades Canyon NUC is everything we’ve ever wanted in a tiny desktop. It has enough graphical power to play just about any modern game and power VR headsets, but it’s small enough to take anywhere. That said, it’s probably too expensive for most of us.

He says they’re not secretly using your microphone to target ads.

Zuckerberg in D.C.: Day 1

Zuckerberg in D.C.: Day 1
As expected, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was on Capitol Hill yesterday to testify before the Senate Commerce and Judiciary Committees. Later today, he’ll go in front of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Senators mostly asked him if they could delete their data, repeatedly, and got an on-the-record answer to everyone’s favorite Facebook conspiracy theory. Otherwise they dug into the company’s inaction when it discovered Cambridge Analytica possessed such a large cache of data, and what it might do to prevent future situations. Instead of enduring hours of testimony yourself, you check out our recap here, and keep an eye out for updates from today’s hearing.

A quick click to check.

Check right now if Cambridge Analytica used your Facebook data

And after all that, here’s a link to show whether you or your friends were affected.

The personal organizer is back... again.

Gemini PDA review: We’ve come a long way since keyboards

Gemini PDA review: We’ve come a long way since keyboards

The Gemini frustrates and delights in equal measure. It might be a great PDA, but it’s not a great smartphone. However, if you just want a connected, highly portable device to type on in short bursts, that’s ripe for customization, the Gemini could be for you.

It's all thanks to the statute of limitations.

Here’s why a British politician will escape punishment for hacking a rival political party

Thanks to a silly statement made by the British prime minister, most UK politicians are now asked in interviews about the worst thing they’ve ever done. When MP Kemi Badenoch was handed the question, she confessed to something quite serious: hacking into the website of another politician. In an interview with Core Politics, published by the Mail on Sunday, the Conservative MP for Saffron Walden said she’d hacked into the website of Labour politician Harriet Harman "a decade ago."

Cadillac’s plug-in hybrid delivers on features and EV-only range, but falls short when pushed to the cornering limits. Also, that smallish trunk...

But wait, there's more...

1. Vizio's new P-series TV is its brightest yet

2. PayPal to launch debit cards and traditional banking services

3. Web standard brings password-free sign-ins to virtually any site

Editor's Pick: Researchers to Put Facebook's Role in Elections Under Magnifying Glass

John P. Mello Jr.
Apr 10, 2018 9:43 AM PT
A group of nonprofits have agreed to fund an initiative to study Facebook's role in elections and democracy. The organizations will pay the expenses of researchers, and Facebook will give the scholars access to proprietary data that has met the company's new standards for heightened user privacy protection. "This is a critical first step," said Larry Kramer, president of the Hewlett Foundation. [More...]

Valve Soothes SteamOS Fans After Yanking Steam Machines
Valve has been working to reassure members of its community that it has not yet thrown in the towel on SteamOS and Linux gaming systems that have been hampered over the years due to performance issues, soaring sales on mainstream rival platforms, and generally weak demand. Valve recently withdrew SteamOS machines from its direct online sales portal. [More...]
Turning Social Media From a Problem Into a Solution
The shooting incident that took place last week at YouTube had less to do with guns than with the failure of the police to act on information in a timely way and the inability of social media to be anything but part of the problem. Google has been giving this issue little more than lip service, but I expect it has become motivated to do more, given that YouTube was the latest target. [More...]
