Facebook Declares Open Season on Russian Trolls
Facebook has taken down more than 270 pages and accounts operated by the
Internet Research Agency, a Russian troll farm, CEO Mark Zuckerberg

The Morning After: Weekend Edition

It's Saturday, April 07, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to the weekend! Facebook saved some news for a late Friday release, and there’s one weird Chrome trick that might save you a fraction of a second. (It’s clearing your download history, we’re bad at clickbait.)

Still going.

Facebook suspended another data firm

Facebook suspended another data firm

Friday night Facebook announced it’s suspending another company that has been linked to Cambridge Analytica. Whistleblowers claim that AggregateIQ not only managed CA’s tech platform but that the Brexit group Vote Leave may have improperly funneled money to it in excess of campaign limits.

'Revolution: Apple Changing the World'

Tim Cook outlines Apple's view on privacy, encryption in MSNBC interview

Tim Cook outlines Apple's view on privacy, encryption in MSNBC interview

If you were hoping to hear more about the missing-in-2018 new Mac Pro this isn't the place, but he talked about encryption, jobs and DACA with Chris Hayes and Kara Swisher.

NASA might need it for an ISS trip.

Boeing's first crewed space flight may be more than just a test

Boeing's first crewed space flight may be more than just a test

This week, NASA announced that it updated its commercial crew contract with Boeing. The change surrounds its first test flight -- including the option to extend the flight (from two weeks up to six months) and potentially adding a third crewmember. In other words, the first test flight wouldn't be a test anymore.

Easy fix.

Yes Chrome is scanning your Windows PC, but it might be a bug

Yes Chrome is scanning your Windows PC, but it might be a bug

In case you forgot that Chrome added some malware scanning capabilities on Windows, here’s your reminder. After someone noticed the browser scanning a honeypot folder, engineers discovered the culprit was a bug that could slow down Chrome’s startup slightly. To fix it before an update addresses things, just try clearing your download history.

It’s not just for Zuck anymore.

Facebook will allow everyone to ‘unsend’ messages

After TechCrunch revealed that Facebook had wiped messages sent on its platform by Mark Zuckerberg and other executives from their recipients inboxes, the company announced that soon everyone will be able to do the same thing with their old messages. Convenient, right?

Before SESTA even goes into effect.

Backpage.com was seized by the federal government

Backpage.com was seized by the federal government

When you visit the website now, you'll see a message saying it and all affiliated websites have been taken over "as part of an enforcement action by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the US Postal Inspection Service and the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Division, with analytical assistance from the Joint Regional Intelligence Center." An Arizona CBS affiliate reported that the FBI also raided the home of Backpage co-founder Michael Lacey.

But wait, there's more...

1. YouTube shooting suspect posted angry videos about demonetization, filtering policies

2. I can't wait for laptops with Apple's own chips

3. Apple iPad review (2018): A little better, a little less competition

4. In 'Ready Player One,' the real world doesn't matter

5. Bad Password: The uncovering of a fake Russian pundit

6. $20,000 mail drone takes flight -- and hits a wall (watch the video)

7. Federal investigators 'unhappy' Tesla revealed Autopilot crash details

Facebook Comes Up With a New Data Access Plan
Facebook has announced an update to its policies for restricting data
access on its platform. CEO Mark Zuckerberg also discussed some of
Facebook's new efforts to shore up user privacy protections in a 45-
minute long Q&A with members of the media on Wednesday. Facebook will
implement nine changes, which will allow users to set privacy levels and
limit automatic data sharing.

Curves, Gestures May Be in iPhone's Future
Gesture control and a curved body may be in the iPhone's future. Apple
has been experimenting with those features for the iPhone, and they
could be ready for prime time in two to three years. Gesture control
would allow a user to execute tasks without touching the screen. The
technology could be used for more than just answering phone calls and
opening apps, noted Gartner analyst Tuong Nguyen.

Bluestar Gives Arch Linux a Celestial Glow
Using most any Arch Linux distro usually involves balancing the desire
for hands-on control of the OS against the attraction of convenient
installation and maintenance processes. Bluestar Linux is one of the few
Arch distros that gets the balancing act right. Bluestar Linux is a
GNU/Linux distribution that features up-to-date packages, an impressive
range of software, and a live desktop DVD.
