Today's Story Highlights

Facebook Faces Multiple Government Probes in Massive Data Scandal
EU, UK and U.S. officials have ratcheted up the pressure on Facebook
over a user data scandal that threatens to engulf the company. The
president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, summed up the
stakes in a tweet on Tuesday: "Facebook needs to clarify before the
representatives of 500 million Europeans that personal data is not being
used to manipulate democracy."

Managing in Mature Markets
Markets and companies change as industries grow and as a disruptive
innovation commoditizes. Generally, prices come down because the
innovation becomes commonplace and competitors fight for every scrap
causing margin erosion. Eventually markets equilibrate, and a monopoly
or small oligopoly sets in. We can see this playing out right now --
mature industries like databases have an oligopoly set up.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85208.html

California Weighs Tough Net Neutrality State Law
A California legislator has fleshed out the details in legislation that
would provide comprehensive Net neutrality protection. Sen. Scott Wiener
last week offered an amended version of a bill he introduced earlier
this year, which essentially prohibits ISPs from engaging in any
practice that would manipulate or hinder consumer access to certain
content, devices or services.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85207.html

Walmart-Amazon Rivalry Turns Into Food Fight
Walmart said it would expand its Online Grocery Delivery service,
currently available in six markets, to more than 100 metro areas across
the U.S. Its plans call for covering more than 40 percent of U.S.
households by the end of the year. Walmart will use more than 800 of its
stores to fulfill orders, and it will add thousands of personal shoppers
to the more than 18,000 already employed.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85201.html

Salesforce Offers SMBs a Bunch of Essentials
Salesforce has launched Salesforce Essentials, a collection of
intelligent apps targeting SMBs. Built on the Salesforce Lightning
framework, Essentials offers a consumer-like experience optimized for
any device. Relevant information is displayed on one unified console,
with drag-and-drop customization. "Essentials is easy to try, set up,
use and maintain," said Salesforce SVP Marie Rosecrans.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85193.html

Google to Weed Out Cryptocurrency Ads
Google has said it will stop serving ads for cryptocurrencies and
related content in June. The ban includes, but is not limited to,
initial coin offerings, cryptocurrency exchanges, cryptocurrency wallets
and cryptocurrency trading advice. Google also will bar aggregators and
affiliates from serving ads for cryptocurrencies and related content.
Facebook adopted a similar policy earlier this year.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85203.html

German Court's Privacy Ruling Against Facebook Will Have Far-Reaching Effects
Facebook has millions of users in the European Union, and a German court
recently ruled against the company in a case involving its Privacy
Policy. Few ever read privacy policies except judges, who must examine
them when challenges arise. The new EU General Data Protection
Regulations, which go into effect on May 25, will make things even more
complicated. If you have any customers who are EU residents, the new
GDPR will impact you.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85199.html

Healthcare, CRM's New Vertical
Healthcare might offer the best example of the potential for vertical
market CRM, but most people in CRM may not realize this. Healthcare is,
after all, a bit of a stretch from what we do in the enterprise or SMB
world, but perhaps it shouldn't be. In both spheres we see a relatively
small number of highly paid and overworked people addressing the needs
of a vast number of people.

The Morning After: Uber halts self-driving car tests after fatal crash

It's Tuesday, March 20, 2018.

Hey, good morning!

Welcome to Tuesday morning. We’re still trying to unravel the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica mess, Uber halts its self-driving car tests after a fatal accident and we’re live from GDC. Oh, and one of the biggest games of the moment is free to play... on your phone.

The NTSB is investigating.

Uber stops all self-driving car tests after fatal crash

Sunday evening, one of Uber’s autonomous SUVs struck a woman who later died at the hospital as a result of her injuries. It appears to be the first time a pedestrian has died after a collision with an autonomous vehicle, and as a result, Uber has temporarily suspended all its testing. While an investigation is ongoing, the Tempe police chief provided an update based on video from the car itself, and said “it's very clear it would have been difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.” Still, if there’s a chance for widespread adoption of self-driving car technology, the amount of transparency Uber displays right now will be important.

It keeps getting worse.

Making sense of the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica nightmare

Making sense of the Facebook and Cambridge Analytica nightmare<br />

The idea of a data-science company no one has ever heard of attempting to poke around in a country's collective psyche sounds like a plot out of Black Mirror, and yet here we are. We have some explanations of what this whole situation is about, even as it continues to evolve. Yesterday, the UK’s Channel 4 dropped videotapes from an undercover investigation where it captured CA execs, including its CEO, proposing the use of blackmail and propaganda. While Cambridge Analytica put out its own statement denying wrongdoing, the UK Information Commissioner is seeking a warrant to investigate its offices today. Meanwhile, at Facebook, the NYT reports, CSO Alex Stamos has arranged to leave later this year.

And the standard Vive bundle is $100 cheaper.

HTC's Vive Pro headset is available to pre-order for $799

As GDC kicks off, HTC has announced its latest VR headset, the Vive Pro. It packs higher-res OLED displays, dual depth-sensing cameras and more. All that extra tech drives the price up to $799, and it’s available for pre-order now if you’re interested. If that’s a little too rich, you can still get the standard Vive headset, which is seeing its price drop by $100 to $499.

It actually runs pretty well.

‘PUBG’ arrives on mobile in the US

Get it right now, for free, on iOS or Android.

Don’t expect to see any game demos this week.

Goodbye Ataribox, hello Atari VCS

The company has announced it's rebranding the Ataribox as the Atari VCS in a nod to the 2600's little-used full name and plans to show prototypes of the system, the Classic Joystick and the Modern Controller at the Game Developers Conference this week.

But wait, there's more...

1. How to buy a high-end camera in 2018

2. FordPass dongle adds LTE, WiFi and app control to older cars

3. NVIDIA announces exclusive features for Volta GPUs that don't exist yet

4. IBM's tiniest computer is smaller than a grain of rock salt

5. Internet Archive is saving your favorite handheld LCD games -- and you can play them right now

6. What's on TV: 'Sea of Thieves,' 'Krypton,' 'Roxanne, Roxanne' and 'A Way Out'

7. The Big Picture: A humanoid is born in a Turkish robotics factory

Today's Story Highlights

Fake News Has Become an Existential Threat
The scene in A Few Good Men with Jack Nicholson going off on handling
the truth has been coming to mind way too often of late. Sadly, this is
the world we are living in right now, and social media is at the heart
of it. I recently noticed a headline that implied a lot of people had
taken exception to something Gal Gadot tweeted about Stephen Hawking.

YouTube Aims to Put the Brakes on Online Conspiracies
YouTube intends to ramp up its efforts to combat conspiracy mongers,
perhaps in response to the rash of conspiracy videos that trended
following the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last month. Among
other things, YouTube will supply links to relevant Wikipedia pages and
other credible websites to provide viewers with a counter narrative,
according to CEO Susan Wojcicki.

Larry Page's Self-Flying Taxi Set for New Zealand Test Runs
A new air taxi service financially backed by Google cofounder Larry Page
is set to take off in New Zealand. Page's Kitty Hawk company, the
developer of a new autonomous flying machine called "Cora," will begin
testing the service in rural Canterbury, according to Hayden Munro,
press secretary for Megan Woods, New Zealand's minister of research,
science and innovation.

New Raspberry Pi Packs More Power
The Raspberry Pi Foundation on Wednesday launched the Raspberry Pi 3
Model B+. The new release comes two years after the introduction of its
predecessor, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. The Raspberry Pi computer runs
the open source Raspbian operating system. The Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+
is an incremental upgrade to a line of predecessors that have become
entrenched in education, hobbyist and industry markets.

Fitbit Highlights Versatility in New $200 Smartwatch
Fitbit on Tuesday added a new smartwatch to its wearables line with a
pricetag of $199.95. The Fitbit Versa, which will reach global retail
outlets in next month, will be the lightest metal smartwatch in the U.S.
market. It includes a new dashboard that simplifies the way health and
fitness data is accessed on the device. Versa mixes health and fitness
programs.

Gadgets: Smart Phones, Simple Phones, and Sparkling Water on Tap
Oh, look, it's a new flagship smartphone duo from Samsung. Shockingly
enough, they're called the "Galaxy S9" and "Galaxy S9+." They have a
similar appearance to the previous year's models, but there are also a
few differences, such as a new camera and stereo speakers. There's a
960-frames-per-second slow motion mode, and there's the option to add
music to clips or turn them into GIFs.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/85195.html

SpaceChain, Arch Aim to Archive Human Knowledge in Space
SpaceChain has teamed with the Arch Mission Foundation to use open
source technology to launch an ambitious project involving the storage
of large data sets in spacecraft and on other planets. Arch Mission will
load large quantities of data onto SpaceChain's satellite vehicles with
the eventual aim of storing data on other planets. The joint effort will
help launch the Earth Library.
