Today's Story Highlights

AI's Malicious Potential Front and Center in New Report
As beneficial as AI can be, it has its dark side, too. That dark side is
the focus of a new 100-page report. AI will be used by threat actors to
expand the scale and efficiency of their attacks, it predicts. They will
employ it to compromise physical systems and to broaden their privacy
invasion and social manipulation capabilities. Novel attacks are to be
expected.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85155.html

Google Pay to Challenge Apple, Amazon
Google has launched its long-anticipated Google Pay app, which combines
the features of the former Android Pay and Google Wallet into one
platform, with new benefits designed to accelerate mobile payment use
and retailer participation. The change, first announced last month,
represents a bid to expand the use of Google's growing ecosystem to take
on both Apple and Amazon in the e-commerce space.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85150.html

Broken Corporate Processes Degrade Customer Experience: Survey
Broken corporate processes have been contributing to negative customer
experiences, a recent survey suggests. One thousand employees in U.S.
companies with a workforce of 500 or more who work on a computer or
mobile device for more than five hours a day responded to the online
survey conducted by Nintex. Overall, 54 percent observed broken
administrative processes within their organization.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85149.html

Vendors Await $50B 'Tsunami' of US Telecom Contracts
The U.S. government has modernized telecom and supporting IT twice
within the last 20 years -- but not without controversy, delays and
costly project management. A third modernization currently is under way,
under the direction of the federal GSA. The potential value of contracts
issued to vendors under the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions program
is $50 billion over 15 years.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85146.html

Are You Engineering the Customer Experience Out of Your Business?
Automation. Robots. Technology taking our jobs. I defy you to pick up a
business magazine and avoid this topic -- it will be in there somewhere.
Here's another theme you won't be able to avoid: the need to focus on
the customer experience. These two trends are in tension much of the
time. They don't have to be, but most businesses seem determined to
focus on themselves instead of the customer.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/85147.html

3 Cybersecurity Threats SMB Etailers Should Not Ignore
Some small e-commerce website operators may think their relative
obscurity offers protection, but the fact is that SMBs are especially
vulnerable to cyberattacks and malware. "Very often small businesses
don't feel vulnerable to cyberthreats because they assume cybercriminals
prefer to launch attacks on large companies," said Stephanie Weagle, VP
of Corero.

Today's Story Highlights

Uber's New Express Pool: Walk and Wait
Uber has launched a new service that lowers ride-sharing costs for
customers who are willing to walk to and from designated locations.
Express Pool became available this week in several participating cities.
Passengers must walk a short distance to a pickup intersection. They are
then dropped off at another designated spot, close to their final
destination.

Gadgets: A Different Sort of Activity Tracker and a Smartwatch for Kids
More often than I'd care to admit, I feel the seconds, minutes, and
hours of a day slip into the ether before I realize it's happening. When
it's time for bed and I try to take stock of my day, it's difficult to
recall exactly how I spent my time. As someone who would like to be more
efficient and productive, I think Timeflip seems like a terrific way to
keep track of where my time goes.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/85151.html

Suse, AWS Nudge SAP Customers to the Cloud
Suse recently entered an agreement to expand its relationship with AWS,
allowing Suse Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications to be sold
directly on the AWS Marketplace. AWS customers that are running SAP
workloads on Suse Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications -- a
leading platform for SAP Hana and SAP S/4Hana -- will get integrated and
streamlined support from AWS and Suse.

Russian Twitter Trolls Exploit Florida School Shooting
Within an hour of the shooting at a Florida High School last week,
divisive messages began pouring out of Twitter accounts believed to be
controlled by Russia. At a rapid speed, messages reportedly began
flooding Twitter using popular hashtags to exploit the rampage by a lone
gunman with an assault rifle at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School
in Parkland, Florida.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/85148.html

Silicon Valley's Corrupt Underbelly: It's Far Worse Than We Thought
After addressing the topic of sexual harassment and misconduct in
Silicon Valley last month, I finally got my hands on a copy of Brotopia
, an eye-opening new book, and a lot of executives should be happy I did
not pursue my career in law enforcement. Otherwise I would be working my
butt off to get them off the streets behind bars. Everyone connected to
tech should read this book.

The Morning After: Netflix's new 'Lost in Space' trailer

Engadget Email Newsletter

It's Thursday, February 22, 2018.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Do you really need your own PC? Today we’re looking into personal cloud computing, the risky side of Spotify’s rumored hardware plans and how AI can help make CGI fur more realistic.

With Parker Posey as Dr. Smith.

Netflix's 'Lost in Space' reboot premieres April 13th

Netflix's 'Lost in Space' reboot premieres April 13th

Netflix's Lost in Space remake has been a long, long time in coming (word broke of it back in 2015), but it's finally here... almost. The streaming service revealed its sci-fi show will debut on April 13th and offered a teaser trailer to whet your appetite.

How do you spell boondoggle?

Spotify’s hardware ambitions seem like a risky distraction

We can't be sure what Spotify is actually trying to build, but its search for employees is in line with what you'd expect from a company trying to make a smart speaker. Unfortunately, Chris Velazco would rather see the company invest in making its services better.

Do it for the culture.

Amazon's answer to 'Altered Carbon' is Iain M. Banks' space opera

Amazon's answer to 'Altered Carbon' is Iain M. Banks' space opera

The retail giant announced it has acquired global television rights to Iain M. Banks' space opera series called The Culture. The first book in the series centers on a spy tasked with recovering an AI that has the ability to help win the war.

Someone had to do it.

AI is making more realistic CG animal fur

AI is making more realistic CG animal fur

UC researchers used a concept called subsurface scattering to see how light ricochets around and through translucent fur medullas. Now they’ve trained a neural network to do it and are working on a process for real-time rendering that could make animals in games just as fuzzy as they are in real life.

Very remote desktop.

Shadow virtualizes a high-end gaming PC on your desktop clunker

Shadow virtualizes a high-end gaming PC on your desktop clunker

You could buy a powerful PC to sit on your desk, but Blade is proposing you leave all that power in the cloud instead. With its new Shadow service, you pay a monthly fee to stream the experience of an NVIDIA- and Xeon-powered Windows 10 system to whatever device you happen to be using. With a year-long contract, the price is $35 per month, and then you can play games, update spreadsheets or just read email -- we won’t judge.

Say goodbye to ‘Tweetdecking’ spam.

Twitter's new rules prohibit bulk tweeting

Russian trolls and teens seeking social-media fame will need to find new tools.

The ‘Find My Glasses’ feature is the best part.

Level's activity-tracking smart glasses launch this March

Level's activity-tracking smart glasses launch this March

Think of VSP’s Level less as a Glass successor and more like a Fitbit you wear on your face. These activity-tracker-embedded frames will go on sale in March for $270, excluding the price of lenses. Once they’re on your face, they’ll track steps, calories burned, distance and the total activity time, then sync the data to a phone via Bluetooth. You can also use it to connect with friends and find your misplaced frames with a Find My Glasses feature.

But wait, there's more...

1. Ford president and former CTO Raj Nair leaves over 'inappropriate behavior'

2. Qualcomm's sample headset teases what's next for mobile VR

3. Twitter says its most recent follower purge is about bots, not politics

4. Mike Pence's space council is big on business, small on science

5. 'My PlayStation' profiles are now available on the web

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.
