Today's Story Highlights

Net Neutrality Battle Lines Drawn as FCC Vote Looms
FCC Chairman Ajit Pai's long-brewing plan to repeal Net neutrality has
the broadband, telecom and entertainment worlds at loggerheads. The
commission's expected Dec. 14 vote could result in a complete rewrite of
the script for the Internet's competitive landscape and consumer
protection models. The repeal of Net neutrality would end restrictions
imposed by the Obama administration in 2015.

3 Ways to Buff Up Your Website and Do More Business
Let's face it: Your website is central to your e-commerce business.
Upgrading your website is one of the most important things you can do to
bring in new customers and sell more products. Sometimes, though, it's
difficult to know exactly how to improve your site. To help you out with
that dilemma, here are three ways to refresh your website and boost your
business without breaking the bank.

B2B Tech Marketers Have Work Cut Out for Them
Product reliability and ease of use are key for B2B technology
marketers, suggests a recent survey of technology product and service
decision makers in the U.S. Four hundred B2B tech buyers participated in
the survey, conducted for Lavidge by WestGroup Research. Overall, 68
percent cited reliability as the most critical criterion in their
purchase decisions; 64 percent said ease of use was key.

AWS Gives IoT a Boost With New OS, Services
AWS shone a spotlight on IoT and machine learning technologies earlier
this week, with the announcement of a new operating system and several
new services designed to encourage radical expansion of their deployment
and use across multiple industries. The new OS, Amazon FreeRTOS,
simplifies development, deployment, security and maintenance of
microcontroller-based edge devices, according AWS.

Snapchat Draws Bright Line Between 'Social' and 'Media'
Snap aims to combat fake news on Snapchat by separating content from
professional creators from postings by friends and family. Stories and
Chats from friends will appear on the left side of the camera, while
Stories from content creators, publishers and other members of the
community will appear on the right side. Snapchat aims to disentangle
"social" from "media," noted Snap CEO Evan Spiegel.

CPQ's Other Life
Configure, Price, Quote systems have a name problem. When they debuted,
their basic functions gave a name to the category that was self-
explanatory, and it fit well. As with any good idea in technology,
however, frequent use brought with it demand for more functionality that
quickly outstripped the technology's charter -- a happy problem.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84982.html

Cyber Monday Sales Shoot the Moon
Online sales hit a new record of $6.59 billion on Cyber Monday -- a 17
percent increase from last year's sales for the day -- making it the
largest online shopping day in history, based on Adobe Analytics data.
Mobile shopping also broke records, starting with the channel's first-
ever $2 billion sales day. Smartphone shopping accounted for more than
21 percent of e-commerce revenue.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84975.html

Black Friday Shoppers Embrace Mobile, Set New Online Records
U.S. retailers crossed a historic new threshold over Thanksgiving
weekend as consumers set new records for e-commerce activity and
embraced mobile shopping like never before. The record-breaking $5.03
billion spent online on Black Friday -- a 17 percent increase -- was in
line with expectations. Consumers spent about $43.42 billion on e-
commerce holiday shopping from Nov. 1 to Nov. 26.

Offsetting Asymmetry With Automation
In the security world, there is a truism that defense is harder than
offense because it's an asymmetric playing field. The bad guys need only
find one path into an environment -- one place where everything hasn't
been done exactly "just so" and perfectly -- while those charged with
securing that environment need to protect against intrusions everywhere
they have a technology footprint.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84970.html

Trump Puts Federal Cloud Investments on Front Burner
One of the few policies that President Donald Trump's administration has
carried over from his predecessor is that the federal government needs
to make vast information technology performance upgrades -- especially
to cloud-based platforms. That should comfort vendors seeking business
in the federal market at all levels of cloud offerings -- hardware,
software or services.

It's Tuesday, December 05, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Real Nintendo games playable on an NVIDIA set-top box? Yes -- and it’s not the Switch. Also, it’s time for Apple to pay up and we’re seriously considering the possibility of a Quentin Tarantino-directed Star Trek. It’s that kind of Tuesday morning.

We’ll make it simple for you.

The best Xbox One games

The best Xbox One games

AAA, indie and even Kinect -- these are the ones every Xbox One owner should have in their library.

In China.

Nintendo games are officially available on the NVIDIA Shield

Nintendo games are officially available on the NVIDIA Shield

The NVIDIA Shield just debuted in China, but this localized edition has a very special addition: downloadable (and officially licensed) versions of Nintendo GameCube and Wii games. At launch, the Shield is offering Chinese gamers their first official taste of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Punch-Out.

Money moves.

Apple will start paying Ireland the billions it owes in back taxes

Apple will start paying Ireland the billions it owes in back taxes

Both Apple and Ireland are appealing an EU decision that their sweetheart tax deal is illegal, but for now, the country is starting to collect billions in back taxes.  Reportedly, Apple will begin paying the funds into an escrow account early next year. The other bad news? It can’t use Apple Pay Cash -- that launched yesterday, but it’s only available in the US.

Go.

Google launches Android Oreo Go and Files Go!

Google launches Android Oreo Go and Files Go!

Last night Google released both a stripped-down version of its latest OS and a new file manager app. The only Android Oreo Go devices announced so far are headed for India, but Files Go! Is ready for everyone. Now out of beta, it brings AirDrop-like offline sharing and easy cloud backups.

Meet ‘Altered Carbon’

Netflix’s answer to ‘Blade Runner’ debuts in February

Netflix’s answer to ‘Blade Runner’ debuts in February

Take a little bit of Dollhouse then mix in a lot of Blade Runner and you’ve got Altered Carbon. Netflix’s new sci-fi series debuts February 2nd to tell the tale of a detective digitally resurrected to investigate the murder of the world’s richest man. We’re intrigued.

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

HP Omen X VR backpack review

HP Omen X VR backpack review

According to Devindra Hardawar, the HP Omen X is “ an ingenious gaming device.” The only problem? Getting everything necessary to use one as a wearable VR gaming PC will set you back $3,500, and so far, the experience isn’t worth that kind of premium over a traditional VR setup, and wireless VR headsets are on the way.

With one tiny difference.

‘House of Cards’ will be back next year

‘House of Cards’ will be back next year

Kevin Spacey is out, and Robin Wright will take the lead in the series’ final eight episodes.

That’s one way to do it.

How to stream a paid UFC fight: pretend it’s a video game

Twitch streamer AJ Lester streamed Saturday night’s UFC 218 PPV on his channel by pretending to play the UFC 3 open beta.

But wait, there's more...

1. Quentin Tarantino and JJ Abrams are working on a new 'Star Trek' movie

2. Spacesuit 'take me home' feature could prevent a 'Gravity' situation

3. What's on TV: 'The Grand Tour,' 'Psych: The Movie,' 'LocoRoco 2 Remastered'

4. Apple TV updated with smarter HDR and a new sports section

5. The Big Picture: LiDAR strips landscapes down to their bare glory

6. The best VR headsets and games to give as gifts

Today's Story Highlights

The Return of Industrial Espionage and the Building New Wave of Scandals
As powerful men drop like flies due to their inability to resist abusing
their authority, it's clear that the problem is widespread. Similarly,
it's likely that we'll find the problem of alleged industrial espionage
is not limited to Uber. You see, when people misuse authority -- and the
sexual harassment problem is a massive misuse of authority -- folks
typically don't just misuse it in one area.

FDA Gives Nod to Apple Watch EKG Reader Accessory
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the KardiaBand its stamp
of approval, AliveCor announced Thursday. The device is the first FDA-
cleared personal electrocardiogram accessory designed for use with an
Apple Watch. The KardiaBand allows users to take EKG readings in order
to distinguish between normal sinus heart rhythms and atrial
fibrillation.

Quantum Key Distribution Gets a Speed Boost
A method for scrambling data to protect it from the super powerful
computers of the future has received a speed boost from a team of
researchers from Duke and Ohio State universities and the Oak Ridge
National Laboratory. The method uses quantum key distribution to guard
data from prying eyes. The problem in the past with the technology is
it's slow. Transfer speeds typically are measured in kilobits per
second.

Major Players Roll Up Sleeves to Solve Open Source Licensing Problems
Four big tech players this week moved to improve their handling of open
source software licensing violations. Red Hat, Google, Facebook and IBM
said they would apply error standards in GNU GPLv3 to all of their open
source licensing, even licenses granted under older GPL agreements.
"This will make everything consistent with GPLv3," said IP attorney
Lawrence Rosen.
