Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to Wednesday. Firefox Quantum is here, and it may be time to consider a browser switch. Also, we have a few reports from the Engadget Experience and first impressions of HTC’s new VR headset.

A promising start.

HTC Vive Focus hands-on

HTC Vive Focus hands-on

Richard Lai stuck his head inside the latest VR headset from HTC to try out its wireless 6DoF (six-degree-of-freedom) experience. While the Vive Focus may lack Google Daydream hooks, it does have “world-scale” inside-out tracking. It’s lighter than the original Vive while including a high-res AMOLED screen and Snapdragon 835 CPU. The tracking worked well in “less intensive” apps; however, it was apparent that developers didn’t have much time to port their experiences over. We’ll learn more about the Vive Focus as it gets closer to release, but there’s already a lot of potential here.

No, *your* hands are feet.

Alternate Realities at The Engadget Experience

Alternate Realities at The Engadget Experience

The Alternate Realities grant program at yesterday’s Engadget Experience event resulted in the debut of several immersive art projects. Even if you couldn’t make it, there’s plenty to learn about Dinner Party, Untrained Eyes, Dance With flARmingos and Your Hands Are Feet.

Lucky number 57.

Mozilla claims its newest browser is over twice as fast as the version from 6 months ago thanks to both a new, multi-core CSS engine, tab prioritization and the elimination of bugs that were weighing the software down.

Bezos & Co. have some big decisions to make about what kind of Lord of the Rings story their new TV show will tell. According to Nathan Ingraham, “the series needs someone at the helm who lives and breathes Tolkien.”

It's Tuesday, November 14, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

While we prepare for The Engadget Experience today in Los Angeles, you can take a look back Monday’s biggest stories, including yet another terrifying robot from the good folks at Boston Dynamics.

No PC or base station required.

HTC Vive Focus is a standalone VR headset with ‘world-scale’ tracking

HTC Vive Focus is a standalone VR headset with ‘world-scale’ tracking

After a couple of teases earlier this year, HTC has finally unveiled its upcoming standalone VR headset at today's Vive Developer Conference in Beijing. Dubbed the Vive Focus, this all-in-one device features inside-out 6-degree-of-freedom (6DoF) "world-scale" tracking, meaning it doesn't require external base stations nor sensors, so you can get positional tracking anywhere at any time -- even on a train or plane, should you wish to.

It’s official.

Amazon is making a ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV series

Amazon is making a ‘Lord of the Rings’ TV series

Here’s what we know so far: Amazon’s series “will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring,” and there’s a possibility of a spinoff in the future.

See Spot jog.

Boston Dynamics teases a 'new' SpotMini robot

Boston Dynamics teases a 'new' SpotMini robot

Now that Boston Dynamics has moved from Google/Alphabet ownership to Softbank, it apparently plans to keep the funky robot concepts coming. The latest is this revised SpotMini robot, a dog-like all-electric helper. All we can see in the teaser clip is its new plastic-looking shell and that it’s missing the arm shown with a previous version. The future is weird.

‘LotR’ for free?

Amazon may be prepping a free ad-supported video service

Amazon may be prepping a free ad-supported video service

Ad Age sources claim that Amazon is developing a free, ad-supported streaming service as a "complement" to Prime Video, reviving an idea that had surfaced back in 2014. For its part, Amazon says it has “no plans to create a free, ad-supported version of Prime Video.”

Time to re-evaluate?

After half a season, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is worth paying for

After half a season, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ is worth paying for

Is the new Star Trek series worth subscribing to yet another video service? Swapna Krishna was skeptical but now believes the answer, for Trek fans, is yes. The second half of its first season launches January 7th on CBS All Access.

The buddy system.

AT&T and Verizon team up to build hundreds of new cell towers

Construction on the first towers will begin in early 2018.

2. Microsoft's Black Friday deals include a $189 Xbox One S

3. Semi-autonomous trucks are hauling appliances from Texas to California

Today's Story Highlights

Why Are Tech Companies Trying to Kill Us?
This is the question that keeps me up at night after seeing the news of
Russian influence through social media, and the rapid rise of road
deaths due to smartphone use. I wonder if the executives in these firms
understand not only that dead customers don't generate revenue, but also
that some of the victims could end up being their own kids, spouses or
parents.

Fixes MIA for Many Linux Kernel Flaws
A Google code security researcher's recent discovery of 14 flaws in
Linux kernel USB drivers led to last-minute fixes in the Linux 4.14
release candidate code set for distribution on Sunday. The flaws, which
Google researcher Andrey Konovalov disclosed this week, affect the Linux
kernel before version 4.13.8. All 14 have available fixes. However,
there are other flaws that have not been fixed.

Eavesdropper Vulnerability Exposes Hundreds of Mobile Apps
Appthority has warned that up to 700 apps in the enterprise mobile
environment, including more than 170 that were live in official app
stores, could be at risk to due to the Eavesdropper vulnerability.
Affected Android apps already may have been downloaded up to 180 million
times, the firm said. The vulnerability has resulted in large-scale data
exposure.

Amazon Cloud Cam Joins Burgeoning Smart-Home Ecosystem
Amazon has begun shipping its latest smart home product, a security
camera that works with its Alexa personal assistant and Echo speakers.
The Amazon Cloud Cam allows customers to live-stream activity inside
their home 24/7. It features 1080p full HD resolution, two-way audio for
communicating with family members or pets, night vision technology, and
sophisticated identification algorithms.

High Price Undercuts Microsoft's Xbox One X Mic Drop
Microsoft has released its long-anticipated and much-hyped Xbox One X
console, promising to push the boundaries of modern gaming and video
entertainment. It is the most powerful console in the world, with up to
40 percent more power than existing devices on the market, the company
claimed. Xbox One X gamers can choose from 1,300 gaming titles -- the
largest lineup in company history.

GeckoLinux Beta Does openSuse Better
The latest developmental beta release of GeckoLinux brings this custom
spinoff distro of openSuse to new levels of performance and convenience.
When I first looked at GeckoLinux in late 2015, I was impressed with the
developer's efforts to smooth over what I did not like about using the
Suse infrastructure. GeckoLinux impressed me then. It does not
disappoint me now.
