The year of the Linux desktop has arrived, but in an unexpected way. Microsoft has welcomed Ubuntu Linux into its app store, making it easier than ever to try out the OS. For now, support is limited to Windows Insider beta testers, but everyone will have access once the Fall Creator’s Update for Windows 10 arrives.

Google’s ‘PAIR’ project wants AI and humans to get along

A Google initiative called PAIR, or People + AI Research initiative, aims to make sure AI technology is beneficial and empowering for everyone, and it will focus on tools for AI developers and how to make sure AI systems are inclusive. “PAIR is devoted to advancing the research and design of people-centric AI systems. We're interested in the full spectrum of human interaction with machine intelligence, from supporting engineers to understanding everyday experiences with AI.”

If you like the look of LG’s G6 but decided it’s too expensive, relax. Soon you’ll be able to get it in a cheaper version. The Q6+, Q6 and Q6 Alpha have varying amounts of built-in storage and RAM, but share the big screen, metal frame and features like facial recognition cribbed from their bigger brother. We don’t have pricetags yet, but they will start rolling out next month in Asia.

Can tech replace painkillers?

While Jennifer was on a series of medications for her pain relief -- off-label antidepressants, muscle relaxers and lesser opioids like tramadol -- she found what she calls an unexpected alternative to heavy opioids. It's a small wearable called Quell, a band she wears around her calf that disperses pain relief using low-intensity electrical signals throughout her body's nervous system. It’s one of several technological solutions that might offer a different way of dealing with pain. Brian Mastroianni reports on what’s happening.

Amazon is ready to disrupt the retail landscape for the third
consecutive year, as it launches its July 11 Prime Day sale. The company
will offer thousands of discounted items and special promotions to
reward its Prime customers and increase their numbers, while rivals
scramble to compete. Starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Amazon will offer
special curated deals on some of its biggest-selling items.

Is SaaS Slipping Into the Legacy App Abyss?

Everywhere you look, organizations are shifting their software
acquisition preferences and policies away from traditional, on-premises
legacy applications to a new generation of on-demand SaaS solutions.
Although I was an early advocate, I'm becoming concerned that many
leading SaaS vendors and their enterprise customers are taking actions
that significantly compromise SaaS' fundamental value.

Consumers Will Pay to Be Pleased: Survey

Eighty percent of participants in a recent Capgemini survey said they
would pay more for a better customer experience, and 9 percent were
willing to pay up to 50 percent more. Researchers polled 3,300 customers
of 125 companies in the utilities, consumer products, retail, retail
banking, and Internet-based services sectors. Among the respondents were
450 senior executives from 150 companies.

Amazon Starts the Clock on Prime Day Hoopla

Amazon has set its third annual Prime Day promotion for July 11,
promising its biggest-ever promotion with 30 hours of deals starting at
6:00 p.m. PT on July 10. The company has expanded the event to China,
India and Mexico, to reach a total of 13 international markets. Amazon
will go head-to-head with some of its most important international
rivals, including Chinese e-commerce player Alibaba.

IoT Fuels Growth of Linux Malware

Malware targeting Linux systems is growing, largely due to a
proliferation of devices created to connect to the Internet of Things.
That is one of the findings in a report WatchGuard Technologies released
last week. The report, which analyzes data gathered from more than
26,000 appliances worldwide, found three Linux malware programs in the
top 10 for the first quarter of the year.

administration. What I find fascinating isn't that the government is a

Google recently announced the end of its policy of scanning user emails
for targeted advertising purposes -- a controversial practice that riled
privacy advocates and spurred legal challenges. Gmail is the world's
most widely used email provider, with more than 1.2 billion users.
Google attributed its decision to gains it has made in the enterprise.
