Amazon Pushes Alexa, Highlights Small Sellers in Prime Day Deals
Amazon is ready to disrupt the retail landscape for the third
consecutive year, as it launches its July 11 Prime Day sale. The company
will offer thousands of discounted items and special promotions to
reward its Prime customers and increase their numbers, while rivals
scramble to compete. Starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, Amazon will offer
special curated deals on some of its biggest-selling items.

Is SaaS Slipping Into the Legacy App Abyss?
Everywhere you look, organizations are shifting their software
acquisition preferences and policies away from traditional, on-premises
legacy applications to a new generation of on-demand SaaS solutions.
Although I was an early advocate, I'm becoming concerned that many
leading SaaS vendors and their enterprise customers are taking actions
that significantly compromise SaaS' fundamental value.

Consumers Will Pay to Be Pleased: Survey
Eighty percent of participants in a recent Capgemini survey said they
would pay more for a better customer experience, and 9 percent were
willing to pay up to 50 percent more. Researchers polled 3,300 customers
of 125 companies in the utilities, consumer products, retail, retail
banking, and Internet-based services sectors. Among the respondents were
450 senior executives from 150 companies.

Amazon Starts the Clock on Prime Day Hoopla
Amazon has set its third annual Prime Day promotion for July 11,
promising its biggest-ever promotion with 30 hours of deals starting at
6:00 p.m. PT on July 10. The company has expanded the event to China,
India and Mexico, to reach a total of 13 international markets. Amazon
will go head-to-head with some of its most important international
rivals, including Chinese e-commerce player Alibaba.

Today's Story Highlights

Could Tech Nerf North Korea?
When a hostile country regularly lobs missiles into the ocean with the
stated objective of transforming a U.S. state into a radioactive cloud,
we have a problem. One "oops" and we could suddenly become a 49-state
nation again. Approaches to North Korea tend to be in-the-box thinking,
but there are new technologies that effectively could neutralize the
threat it poses.

Trustify President Jennifer Mellon: Diversity Is Good Business
"My team has always, from day one, been 70 percent female," said
Trustify President Jennifer Mellon. "You know, we're not a flower
delivery service -- we're doing private investigation. It's not a space
women often lead in, so I'm really proud of that. ... Over 45 percent of
my team identified with a protected minority population -- including
LGBT, race, ethnic and religious minorities."

IoT Fuels Growth of Linux Malware
Malware targeting Linux systems is growing, largely due to a
proliferation of devices created to connect to the Internet of Things.
That is one of the findings in a report WatchGuard Technologies released
last week. The report, which analyzes data gathered from more than
26,000 appliances worldwide, found three Linux malware programs in the
top 10 for the first quarter of the year.

The Stupidly Dangerous Politics of Blame
I hope that, like me, you are off this long holiday weekend and have a
chance to think about the drama that now surrounds the U.S.
administration. What I find fascinating isn't that the government is a
bit of a mess but that the accidental transparency of this
administration is focusing us more on the visibility of the problems
rather than on the problems themselves.

Google Gives Up Scanning Personal Gmail
Google recently announced the end of its policy of scanning user emails
for targeted advertising purposes -- a controversial practice that riled
privacy advocates and spurred legal challenges. Gmail is the world's
most widely used email provider, with more than 1.2 billion users.
Google attributed its decision to gains it has made in the enterprise.

The Morning After: Tesla's new car rolls off the production line

Engadget Email Newsletter

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Monday, July 10, 2017.

Hey, good morning!

Say hello to the new Tesla Model 3 -- just don’t expect to buy one all that soon. We also have accidental voice commands stopping robberies and China’s latest space-exploration experiment.

It's a modest start to much larger plans.

Tesla makes its first Model 3

Tesla makes its first Model 3
After months of waiting and no shortage of hype, Tesla's first Model 3 is finally rolling off the production line. Elon Musk has revealed that the initial production unit is ready (no, not the one in the picture) pending a "final checkout." It's safe to say that owners would be part of a very exclusive club, at least initially, given that a mere 30 Model 3s will reach buyers by the end of July.

The feature will work for other ‘skills’ in the future.

Alexa notifies you when Amazon has shipped your package

You can add one more device to the pile of gadgets vying for your attention, now that Amazon has switched Alexa's notifications on. The e-commerce titan first revealed on its developer site back in May that visual notifications were coming to its speakers. Now, the feature is live, though in very limited capacity. For the moment, it can only tell you about packages out for delivery.

We don’t know why they called it ‘Lunar Palace 365.’

China starts 200-day simulation of living on another planet

Four university students in Beijing have begun a 200-day isolation experiment, Lunar Palace 365, where they'll live solely on the resources they would have on the Moon or Mars. That means generating life-giving oxygen from plants, recycling urine to produce drinking water and generally making the most of limited supplies.

An accidental voice command saves the day.

Smart home gadget ends a violent dispute by calling police

Smart home gadget ends a violent dispute by calling police
Inadvertent smart speaker commands aren't always bad. New Mexico police report that a smart home device (incorrectly labeled at first as a Google Home) intervened in a domestic violence incident by calling 911. When Eduardo Barros asked “did you call the sheriffs?” as he threatened his girlfriend with a gun during a fight, the device interpreted it as a request to call emergency services. They overheard the altercation and called both negotiators and a SWAT team, who arrested Barros over assault, battery and firearms charges after a stand-off.
