The Morning After: Weekend Edition

It's Saturday, May 27, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to the weekend. If you have an extra day off, then that may provide time to catch up on our new Tomorrow section, plus the latest Google Search feature and Apple’s plan for AI.

Let's talk about the future.

Welcome to Tomorrow, the home of stuff that hasn’t happened yet

Welcome to Tomorrow, the home of stuff that hasn’t happened yet

This week we launched a brand new section on Engadget, which is dedicated to bringing the future into focus. Our launch week stories have covered everything from prosthetics to binge watching to the art of nuclear war -- and there’s much more to come.

You think?

Apple is reportedly working on a dedicated mobile chip for AI

Apple is reportedly working on a dedicated mobile chip for AI

On-device machine learning is suddenly a highlight feature for smartphones, and unsurprisingly there are rumors Apple is going to improve the iPhone’s capabilities in that area. Google and Qualcomm have a bit of a head start in AI, but we’ve already seen the folks in Cupertino whip up dedicated hardware to boost things like motion tracking and wireless audio. It’s unclear how soon the “Apple Neural Engine” could arrive, but we’ll be looking for more information at WWDC.

Wonder what we’ll find there?

Google Search has a new tab: Personal

Google Search has a new tab: Personal

Given how much data Google probably has accumulated about you, there’s no surprise that its latest search option is all about one person. If you take a look at the Personal search (currently available on the web for most), it will pull up results from your Gmail, Google Photos and other linked sources. It could be more convenient than switching tabs, or just when you want an NSA-level view on everything you’ve shared with big G.

Guac is still extra

Chipotle finds malware exposed credit card info across the US

Chipotle finds malware exposed credit card info across the US

Another day, another restaurant’s credit card systems have been hacked. This time Chipotle is up, and if you ate at one of its locations during March or April, your card information might have been exposed.

Helium, not hydrogen

Sergey Brin’s big airship plans

The latest set of rumors around Google co-founder Sergey Brin’s dirigible project suggests that when completed, it will be the largest flying object in the world. At 200m long, it should be easy to see when Brin takes it out for a test drive, or in normal operation splitting time between deliveries of humanitarian supplies and luxury air yacht trips for the exec’s family.

Too real to kill.

Truly intelligent enemies could change the face of gaming

Truly intelligent enemies could change the face of gaming

Using AI to create nuanced and challenging virtual rivals could make games more realistic than ever -- but have we considered all the possible downsides?

But wait, there's more...

1. Nokia's throwback phone is too basic for 2017

2. NASA's Juno mission discovers Jupiter is really weird

3. Bad Password: The Facebook president and Zuck's racist rulebook

4. Everyone's favorite useless Pokemon gets its own game

5. Microsoft's new Surface Pro is both lighter and quieter

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.

Today's Story Highlights

Comcast Rolls the Dice With Xfinity Instant TV
Comcast has led the way in cable television ever since it acquired AT&T
Broadband a decade ago. However, in recent years, new technologies from
new competitors have been eating away at Comcast's growth. That's why
Comcast not only has introduced Xfinity Mobile, which is its new
wireless service, but also is getting ready to launch its own IPTV
service, Xfinity Instant TV.

Helpshift Integrates With Salesforce
Mobile technology has delivered a lot of useful functionality that
enables vendors and their customers to be on the same page more
frequently. However, the screen size has an inherent drawback: It shows
a very narrow slice of a reality -- typically one idea at a time. The
problem is especially acute in the key areas of sales and service. A
mobile "help" app should deliver help the customer values.

Genesys Launches G-Nine CX Framework
Genesys on Monday introduced G-Nine. "Think of G-Nine as the Genesys
innovation framework that guides many aspects of our business -- product
strategy being one of those," said Genesys CMO Merijn te Booij. "Within
the G-Nine innovation framework, we have defined our themes related to
technology and consumer trends that we'll focus on in the next two
years."

Snap Stock Snaps Back - for the Moment
Snap shares appear to have rebounded from the plunge they took earlier
this month, after the newly public company released a massive $2.2
billion loss in the first quarter, but investors still are scratching
their heads over the company's prospects. Trading just over $20 at mid-
day Tuesday, Snap looks to some like it has regained its early bloom.
Others suspect that darker days are yet to come.

Red Hat Linux Upgrade Pushes New Security, Automation Tools
Red Hat on Tuesday announced the availability of Red Hat Enterprise
Linux 7.4 beta. RHEL 7.4 includes new security and compliance features
and streamlined automation, along with tools for improved systems
administration. This latest upgrade comes nearly three years into the
series 7 lifecycle. It continues to provide enterprises with a rich and
stable foundation.

Softbank Vision Fund Attracts $93B From Gulf States, Apple, Others
The Softbank Vision Fund has closed its first major funding round
raising more than $93 billion in capital from the Gulf states, as well
as tech stalwarts Apple, Qualcomm and others. Softbank, which last fall
launched the fund with backing from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi
Arabia, said it has received new commitments from the Mubadala
Investment Fund from the United Arab Emirates.

Verizon Aims to Help Firms Get Up Close and Personal With Customers
Verizon Enterprise Solutions has released Visual Interactive Calling, an
SDK and platform designed to enable banks, retailers, airlines, travel
and hospitality companies, and other firms to communicate visually with
their customers. "The sweet spot for this solution is enterprises that
have deep mobile app penetration into their customer base," said Tom
Smith, a CX manager at Verizon.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84551.html

Walmart Delivers E-Commerce Stunner
Walmart on Thursday reported soaring e-commerce growth during its fiscal
first quarter, along with strong organic sales figures -- results that
suggest rival Amazon may have a fight on its hands. Online sales grew a
stunning 63 percent during the quarter, perhaps in response to the
company's newly introduced free two-day shipping and its upgraded mobile
app.

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft's Mixer Could Shake Up the Streaming Game
Microsoft on Thursday announced Mixer, a rebranded version of its game-
streaming service previously known as "Beam." In addition to the name
change, the service will include a number of new features designed to
attract more gamers. The added features will unlock new possibilities
for social streaming, while also helping viewers find specific content
across the service, according to Microsoft.

Main Surface Pro Improvements Are Beneath the Surface
Microsoft on Tuesday announced a refresh of its Surface Pro tablet-
laptop computer. Although Microsoft said the fifth generation of the
unit has been redesigned from the inside out with more than 800 new
custom parts, the Surface Pro looks similar to its predecessor. "If you
were looking for a major redesign of Surface, this isn't it," said Ross
Rubin, principal analyst at Reticle Research.

New GitHub Marketplace Showcases Integrators, Speeds Development
GitHub has launched GitHub Marketplace, featuring apps from more than a
dozen integrators. The platform allows developers to review and purchase
new tools that do everything from helping to manage projects, to
automating code building, testing code quality, or monitoring the impact
of code changes. It allows devs to start using tools without setting up
multiple accounts or payment methods.

Getting Serious About Teen Smartphone Addiction
Parents don't need a poll to tell them their teenagers are addicted to
smartphones. After all, smartphones are a permanent fixture rather than
accessories on the visages of kids of all ages these days. Even so,
polls move these everyday observances from anecdotal to official problem
when the numbers tilt in that direction -- and a Common Sense Media poll
hit full tilt.

Leaked Docs Spotlight Complexity of Moderating Facebook Content
The public got a rare view into how Facebook tries to keep offensive and
dangerous content offline in a report published Sunday. Leaked
confidential documents exposed the secret rules by which Facebook
polices postings on issues such as violence, hate speech, terrorism,
pornography, racism and self-harm, as well as such subjects as sports
fixing and cannibalism.
