The Morning After: The Shadow Brokers Windows 'zero day' hacks...weren't

Engadget Email Newsletter

It's Saturday, April 15, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Welcome to the weekend! We have news on the Microsoft Windows zero-days that weren’t, and a teaser trailer for the next Star Wars movie.

Watch this first, then come back

The first trailer for 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is here

The first trailer for 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is here

As part of the annual Star Wars Celebration event, Disney showed off its first trailer for the next movie in the series. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will pick up right where Episode VII left off when it premieres in theaters December 15th.

Twist ending.

What do you call a zero-day hack that’s already patched?

What do you call a zero-day hack that’s already patched?

Yesterday, the world of infosec turned upside down when "The Shadow Brokers" -- a  group claiming to have stolen gear from an NSA operation -- released information including tools for hacking many versions of Windows (and details on an allegedly-targeted Middle Eastern bank). Early Saturday morning, things took another turn when Microsoft responded, noting that of the tools released, other than the ones that targeted already-obsolete versions of its OS, every vulnerability mentioned is addressed by an existing patch.

Since four of the vulnerabilities were fixed at once just a month ago it appears that Microsoft got an inside tip about the leak. Whatever happened, the company isn’t saying, and conspicuously failed to credit a source for that particular vulnerability in its patch notes. As for end users, all you need to know for now is that if you’re running Windows 7 or later and have the current updates, then you don't have to fear these attacks.

You know you want to.

The Hey Vina! App is like Tinder for BFFs

Making friends as an adult can be difficult, but maybe an app can fix that. Hey Vina! started as a monthly “Ladies Who Vino” meetup before turning into a service that takes the mechanics of Tinder and applies them to women looking for a new BFF or two.

"Just in time for Earth day," Google promises a new experience for Google Earth. Since it’s 2017 we’ll assume that includes some kind of VR hook, but we’ll have to wait until Tuesday to know for sure.

Google Spins VR Experiences on the Web
Google on Thursday announced compatibility of its WebVR on Chrome with
its low-cost Google Cardboard virtual reality system. It also launched
WebVR Experiments, an online showcase for virtuality reality content in
development. WebVR became available on Daydream-ready phones earlier
this year. The newly launched WebVR Experiments are essentially proof-
of-concept offerings.

Bixby Will Be Seen but Not Heard When Galaxy S8 Launches
Samsung on Wednesday said that Bixby Voice will not be operational when
its Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones hit the market. Some Bixby features --
Vision, Home and Reminder -- will be active when the phones become
available on April 21, Samsung said, but the Bixby Voice capability
won't show up until later this spring. The delay may be due to a
weakness in Bixby's English language chops.

Anbox Could Be the Android-to-Linux Tool Devs Have Been Waiting For
The ability to run Android apps natively in a Linux desktop environment
is a step closer to realization, thanks to Anbox, a new open source
project. Simon Fels, lead software engineer at Canonical, last week
debuted a pre-alpha release of the Anbox platform, which he has been
working on independently since 2015. There were quite a few problems to
solve on the way to a working version, he said.

Spam Czar Nabbed in Spain May Have Link to Election Tampering
An alleged spam kingpin with possible ties to election meddling in the
U.S. was arrested in Spain last week under a U.S. international warrant.
Pyotr Levashov had been vacationing in Barcelona with his family.
Levashov was arrested for interfering with the 2016 U.S. presidential
elections, the Russian news outlet RT reported, but the DoJ said the
arrest was not connected to national security.

The Morning After: Say goodbye to the NES Classic Edition

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, April 14, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

This Friday, we’re saying an unexpected goodbye to the NES Classic Edition and preparing for the Model 3’s big reveal in July. Oh, and scientists took a picture of a black hole -- you just can’t look at it yet.

Limited time only

Nintendo is already shutting down sales of the NES Classic Edition

Nintendo is already shutting down sales of the NES Classic Edition

If you want an NES Classic Edition, then we hope you’ve already got one. Nintendo revealed that the retro box “wasn't intended to be an ongoing, long-term product.” As such, the last shipments will arrive in April, and then it’s gone. It’s not clear if this discontinuation will also impact the Japanese Famicom Classic, but we’re just hoping for a follow-up SNES Classic Edition with downloadable ROMs and wireless controllers.

Evolution

Tesla will unveil the Model 3’s final form in July

Tesla will unveil the Model 3’s final form in July

Tesla’s first mass-market EV is getting closer to production. In response to a tweet, CEO Elon Musk confirmed plans to unveil the finalized vehicle in July. Fans of the company should also mark their calendars for 18 - 24 months from now, since Musk tweeted that a Tesla pickup should be unveiled around then. Oh, and remember that Tesla semi truck? Expect to see that in September.

But it wasn’t the number one seller

Nintendo sold almost a million Switches in March

Nintendo sold almost a million Switches in March

We’re not surprised to find out that NPD reports the Nintendo Switch counted 906,000 sales in the US during its launch month. What is a little surprising, however, is that despite being the company’s fastest-selling console ever, it was actually outsold by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That flagship game somehow moved 925,000 copies on the Switch alone, along with an additional 460,000 sales for the Wii U version.

It’s real; it just lives out of town

Astronomers may have taken the first photo of a black hole (but they can’t show it to you yet)

Astronomers may have taken the first photo of a black hole (but they can’t show it to you yet)

That image above is not the first picture taken of a black hole -- it's an artist’s rendering. However, astronomers operating the Event Horizon Telescope believe they have pulled off the feat. The project used a network of eight connected observatories working over five nights to observe two black holes: Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black at the center of our galaxy, and M87, which resides in a nearby galaxy. The only problem is that they collected so much data (500TB at each of observatory) that they need to ship the hard drives over to MIT for processing. Oh, and since one of them is in the South Pole, it won’t be able to send the drives until October.

Copy, paste, replace

Instagram’s Stories feature has more daily users than Snapchat’s entire service

Sure, Facebook is playing catch up to disappearing daily anecdotes, but Instagram just revealed its Stories feature now has 200 million daily users. That’s good for about a third of the people on Instagram, but more importantly, it’s more than the 158 million daily users Snapchat said it had in an IPO filing a couple of months ago.

TMI?

Finally, a good digital masturbator

Finally, a good digital masturbator

Kiroo’s Fleshlight Launch looks like “a cross between a sci-fi arm cannon and the cleaning dock for a Braun shaver.” As a connected device, it can be used for teledildonic activities or synchronized action with a movie, and according to Dan Cooper, it’s good at what it does. Also a plus: it doesn’t contain an easily hacked camera.

Advancing in reverse

DJI adds an ‘Advanced’ version of its Phantom 4 drone

DJI adds an ‘Advanced’ version of its Phantom 4 drone

If you need a UAV and neither of DJI’s existing Phantom 4 (standard and Pro) drones fit the bill, then maybe you’ll find this one has the right fit. The Advanced model splits things down the middle with the Pro’s 4K camera, but fewer onboard sensors. As such, it’s about $300 less and will go on sale for $1,349 at the end of this month.

But wait, there's more...

1. The promise of self-driving cars starts with better 'eye-sight'

2. Trump's transition team asked NASA about mining the moon

3. LG G6 review: Finally back in the race

4. The FCC just sold a chunk of the wireless spectrum to T-Mobile
