Online Freedom of Speech May Be in Peril: Pew
Trolling, cyberbullying, harassment and just plain nastiness have become
commonplace online, and this situation is likely to remain unchanged or
worsen over the next decade, suggests a Pew Research report released
Wednesday. Researchers polled more than 1,500 technology experts,
academics, and business and government leaders on the future of free
speech online.

Galaxy S8, S8+ Dazzle in Samsung's Comeback Launch
Samsung on Wednesday launched the Galaxy S8 and S8+, its next generation
of smartphones. They feature major improvements in design and security
processing power, as well as new digital assistant technology that may
challenge the best devices on the market. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are
available with 5.8 inch and 6.2 inch screens respectively. Both sport an
infinity display using Corning Gorilla Glass, and a bezel-less design.

Cloud Foundry Aims to Close Cloud Skills Gap
The Cloud Foundry Foundation has announced the launch of a worldwide
cloud-native developer certification initiative. The foundation created
the program to fill the widening gap of trained programmers for cloud
apps and services. The Linux Foundation -- which has trained and
certified more developers on open source software than any organization
in the world -- will provide the instruction.

Elon Musk Plans to Build a Human-AI Interface
Tech visionary Elon Musk has launched a startup, Neuralink, dedicated to
developing technology that will connect human brains directly to a
computer. This venture is in its very early stages, Musk confirmed.
Neuralink, which Musk is funding privately, is a medical research firm
that aims to develop "neural lace" -- a technology that could allow the
implanting of small electrodes into the brain.

Too Much Communication
The world is a smaller place because we have so many ways to connect and
communicate, but it has created a generation gap, a gap of classes and
perhaps even a culture gap. This may seem like a serious contradiction;
after all shouldn't more means of communication bring us closer
together? The obvious answer is yes, but unfortunately this is not the
case.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84410.html

Red Hat Pilots New Program to Ease Digital Transformation
Red Hat on Monday announced a new Application Platform Partner
Initiative at its North America Partner Conference in Las Vegas. The
goal is to provide a more robust ecosystem for companies engaging in
digital transformation. The company has started conducting tests in a
pilot program with a small number of solutions-oriented consulting
partners in North America.

UK Home Secretary: Apps Shouldn't Serve as Terrorist Hiding Places
UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd on Sunday called for greater government
access to encrypted content on mobile apps. Apps with end-to-end
encryption, like Facebook's WhatsApp, should not be allowed to conceal
terrorists' communications from law enforcement, Rudd said in a
television interview. "There should be no place for terrorists to hide,"
she said.

Don't Let the Next Catastrophic Phishing Scandal End Your Career
What I think is amazing about all of the massive data breaches we hear
about is that we know most are not reported. For every email, customer
record, or financial theft in the news, there likely are hundreds that
remain in the shadows. Yet another incident came to light last week. A
clever Lithuanian individual was able to pull a whopping $100 million
from a bunch of unnamed Internet companies.

Today's Story Highlights

House Votes to Kill Privacy Rules Binding ISPs
The House of Representatives has approved the Congressional Review Act,
undoing privacy restrictions imposed on ISPs during the Obama
administration. The Senate passed the CRA last week in a 50-48 vote
along party lines. The White House has expressed support for the CRA.
"This is one time I believe the White House," remarked John Simpson,
privacy project director at Consumer Watchdog.

Translating Website Visits Into Quality Leads
Back in the day -- like, 1993 -- every company had to have a website
because it was the thing you did! A website was something new, fresh and
shiny, and it allowed the marketing team to reach more people than ever
before. It was on the Internet, which automatically made your company
seem cool. It was totally rad! Within about 18 moths, though, everyone
had a website and the novelty wore off.

Why Are Health Records So Valuable to Cybercriminals?
Protecting the data in electronic health records did not start with the
advent of HIPAA, as many people think. Protecting health records has
been a critical requirement in the healthcare space since the computers
became a fixture in hospitals. However, HIPAA added public reports of
fines issued for covered entities' failure to properly protect data
contained within EHRs.

It's Mud Season Again
It's mud season here in New England -- that time of year when everything
merges into an amorphous mess. The gray sky merges with a gray landscape
made into slop by continual rains and dirty gray melting snow. It's hard
to tell where one thing ends and another begins. Eventually the sun
comes out and dries everything, the sky becomes distinct from the
horizon, plants bloom, and order is restored.

Amazon Confirms Deal to Buy Middle East E-Commerce Leader Souq.com
Amazon has agreed to buy Souq.com, the leading online retailer in the
Middle East, reportedly edging out rival Emaar Malls' $800 million
offer. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Amazon reportedly
agreed to pay less for Souq than Emaar had offered. Souq, led by
cofounder and CEO Ronaldo Mouchawar, claims to be the largest online
retail and marketplace platform in the Arab world.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84414.html

Competition and Regulation Threaten Sharing Economy Markets
Eighty-three percent of U.S. broadband households, or more than 250
million consumers, own and use a smartphone. A recent beneficiary to
this mass adoption has been the sharing economy phenomenon, which
includes sharing apps such as Uber, Lyft and Airbnb. These business
models are augmented by real-time data including location, instant
gratification, on-demand pricing, and easy payment options.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84408.html

Amazon Strikes Contact Center Market
AWS on Tuesday announced Amazon Connect, a self-service contact center
solution based on the same cloud technology used by Amazon customer
service associates worldwide. It offers phone numbers throughout the
U.S. and 18 countries in Europe. "The opportunity for cloud contact
centers is significant," said Rebecca Wettemann, VP of research at
Nucleus Research.
http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/84413.html

Consumer Advocates Bemoan Senate Vote to Lift ISP Privacy Restrictions
Privacy advocates and consumer groups are fighting back against the U.S.
Senate's Thursday vote to undo privacy restrictions on Internet service
providers. In a 50-48 party line vote, the Senate approved the
Congressional Review Act, S.J. Res. 34. If the House of Representatives
gives it the green light, it then will go to the president to be signed
into law.

The Morning After: Samsung is back

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, March 30, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

Yesterday we focused on Samsung’s big Galaxy S8 reveal, and it didn’t disappoint. If you need to get up to speed in a hurry, we boiled the entire event down into one nine-minute video that you can watch here.

No more leaks

Meet the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

Meet the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+

Ever since the Galaxy Note 7 recall, Samsung has been waiting to get another flagship device into its customer’s hands. Now that the new Galaxy S8 family is here, we have new devices to talk about with new features like Bluetooth 5.0. Chris Velazco calls the S8+ “the most comfortable big phone I’ve ever held,” while Sean Buckley wants everyone to pump their brakes on the hype -- it’s still just a phone. But it’s quite a phone, with Bixby AI, facial recognition and unlocking, and the DeX system that turns your smartphone into a desktop computer.

It's good.

Windows 10 Creators update release date & review

Windows 10 Creators update release date & review

Microsoft finally has an official release date for its big upgrade to Windows 10: April 11th. Devindra Hardawar reviewed the OS, so you’ll know what to expect, which amounts to a series of tweaks and a few welcome new features. The Game Bar, upgraded Edge browser and Paint 3D are all useful additions, even if Windows doesn’t look very different after the update.

New Game+

The Xbox One’s new UI is rolling out to everyone

The Xbox One’s new UI is rolling out to everyone

While we wait for the Creators Update on Windows 10, Microsoft is pushing its latest software for the Xbox One. Already available to beta testers, this version brings a faster miniguide that pops up with a single button press, plus streaming with Microsoft’s Twitch competitor Beam. One thing, though, it’s time to say goodbye to the picture-in-picture Snap mode.

Hideo Kojima is headlining the inaugural Tribeca Games Festival

On April 28th and 29th the Tribeca Film Festival will have some company, as the Tribeca Games Festival takes place in New York City. Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will speak, as some of the big names behind games like Bioshock, Max Payne, Firewatch and Overwatch. Also, Telltale Games promises a premiere and “crowd play” event for its upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game. Tickets start at $30 and are available here.

But wait, there's more...

1. Facebook opens up 360-degree live streaming to everyone

2. Lyft's latest idea looks familiar because it's a bus.

3. Take a look at the first interior photos of Blue Origin's space capsule for tourists

4. Donald Trump is tweeting from an iPhone now

5. Bioware: Expect 'Mass Effect: Andromeda' support info Tuesday
