It's Friday, March 10, 2017.

Congratulations, you made it.

The week is almost over, but first find out what the new head of the EPA said, the latest info on Gran Turismo Sport and catch up with the real-life person behind Horizon Zero Dawn’s Aloy. Then this weekend, keep an eye out for our updates from SXSW.

Still cheaper than a trip to space

Oculus launches ‘Mission: ISS’ VR experience

Oculus launches ‘Mission: ISS’ VR experience

Since most of us won’t make a trip to the Space Station, a virtual reality version will have to do. Mission: ISS is now available on the Oculus Rift, complete with support for the Touch motion controllers. You can dock spacecraft, go outside the space station or perform mission tasks, thanks to the work of a Hollywood effects studio that built everything based on NASA models.

This is fine.

Wasn't this supposed to come out last year?

Sign up now for the 'Gran Turismo Sport' beta

Unlike more prolific racing series, Gran Turismo usually only makes a couple of appearances each console generation. Fans can get an early start on the next installment by signing up for a “closed beta” that developer Polyphony Digital says will start March 17th. Expect a rotating selection of tracks and cars each day, plus a sample of the new Driver Profile system for online racing.

Some Google Pixel phones are having microphone issues

Some Google Pixel phones are having microphone issues

Friends having trouble hearing you calling from a Pixel? Google has confirmed some users are experiencing mic failures due to hardware issues like cracked solder connections. If it’s happening, a software update won’t be able to fix things, so check with Google or whoever you purchased the phone from to get a replacement (newer devices have been reinforced.)

NASA’s new budget leaves out Earth-based research

NASA’s new budget leaves out Earth-based research

Congress has passed a bill authorizing NASA’s new budget, laying out plans for projects like the SLS and Orion missions. It has not yet been signed by the president, but as is, projects like the Asteroid Redirect Mission and climate change research are in doubt.

But wait, there's more...

1. Google Home demoed working with eBay's ShopBot

2. Retinal implant could add years to your eyesight

3. An odd 'Ghost in the Shell' movie and couture event, in photos

4. Google is ready to take over your office with Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat

5. A chat with the star of 'Horizon Zero Dawn' and 'Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin'?'

New Rules
One of the foundational ideas of business is the Pareto analysis, which
tries to identify the small portion of factors that are responsible for
the majority of business results. You know -- 80 percent of profits come
from 20 percent of the customer base, and similar observations. Vilfredo
Pareto formulated a business classic that we now refer to simply as "the
80/20 rule."

Snap Sells Itself as Camera Company as IPO Nears
As it approaches its IPO, Snap, maker of the popular Snapchat messaging
app, is positioning itself as a camera company. "We feel like we're
really at the beginning of what cameras can do," said Snap CEO Evan
Spiegel. "Before, cameras were the best way to perfectly save or record
something that you saw. They sort of helped augment memory -- but now,
you know, cameras augment the way that we talk."

Qualcomm, Microsoft to Give Cloud Services a Speed Boost
Qualcomm has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to accelerate
next-generation cloud services on the 10nm Qualcomm Centriq 2400 ARM-
based platform. The collaboration will span multiple future generations
of hardware, software and systems. The two have been working for several
years on ARM-based server enablement, optimizing a version of Windows
Server for ARM running on the Centriq 2400.

WikiLeaks Dumps CIA Hacking Docs Online
WikiLeaks on Tuesday dumped thousands of classified documents onto the
Internet, exposing hacking programs used by the CIA. The torrent of data
is just the first in a series of dumps WikLeaks is calling "Vault 7."
This first installment includes 8,761 documents and files stolen from an
isolated high-security network within the CIA's Center for Cyber
Intelligence in Langley, Virginia.

The Terminal Is Where Linux Begins - and Where You Should, Too
Once you have a sense of the vast potential of Linux, you may be eager
to experience it for yourself. Given the complexity of modern operating
systems, it can be hard to know where to start. As with many things,
computers can be better understood through a breakdown of their
evolution and operation. The terminal is not only where computers began,
but also where their real power still resides.

IBM's Quantum Leap Could Redefine 'Magic'
No, I'm not talking about that Quantum Leap . IBM just made a really
interesting announcement in that it is enhancing its online quantum
computer systems with a new API and improving its simulator so it can
handle 20 qubits. Listening to the prebriefing was a bit like pretending
I was Penny trying to understand Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory .

Google Invites Open Source Devs to Give E2EMail Encryption a Go
Google has released its E2EMail encryption code to open source as a way
of pushing development of the technology. "Google has been criticized
over the amount of time and seeming lack of progress it has made in
E2EMail encryption, so open sourcing the code could help the project
proceed more quickly," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
That will not stop critics, though, he added.

GIT CEO Adriana Gascoigne: More Women in Tech Means More Problems Solved
Prior to founding Girls in Tech, Adriana Gascoigne was one of very few
women working at a startup. "I'd look around the room every day and see
that there was a huge problem of representation. I knew we needed to
change the culture of the company to recruit more women and benefit more
women, but we also needed diversity in product development ... to make a
better product," she recalled.
