HPE to Buy One-Time Rising Star Nimble for $1B Cash
Hewlett Packard Enterprise has inked a deal to acquire flash storage
firm Nimble Storage, once viewed as a darling of Wall Street, for $12.50
a share in cash, or $1 billion. HPE also agreed to assume or pay out
Nimble Storage's unvested equity awards, which are valued at $200
million. Upon completion of the deal, Nimble Storage will merge with a
unit of HPE and become a subsidiary of the company.

Online Trust Alliance Launches IoT Security Campaign
The Online Trust Alliance is calling on businesses, consumers and
government to share responsibility for ensuring that Internet of Things
devices are not weaponized, outlining actions that businesses, consumers
and government can take to ensure the security and privacy of IoT
devices. It calls for a campaign to have retailers and consumers reject
IoT products that pose a security threat.

Salesforce, IBM Kick Off New Artificial Intelligence Era
Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty on Monday
announced a global strategic partnership to deliver joint solutions
leveraging artificial intelligence. Einstein, the AI that powers
Salesforce applications, will be connected seamlessly with IBM's Watson
AI platform. The integration is scheduled for availability in the second
half, and pricing will be announced at that time.

Nintendo Fans Get Their Hands on the Switch
Nintendo's Switch made its debut at retail stores on Friday in one of
the gaming industry's most anticipated product launches. The console,
which retails for $299.99, is Nintendo's attempt to revolutionize the
industry by offering a device that can provide interactive gaming
quality and control whether on the big screen at home, or in a multitude
of settings requiring portability.

After Blowout IPO, Is Snap a Keeper?
Shares of Snapchat owner Snap Inc. soared higher on Friday, following
Thursday's successful initial public offering. After debuting at $17.00
on the New York Stock Exchange, Snap shares rose 44 percent to $24.48 on
Thursday, well above analyst expectations, placing the company's value
at $28 billion. The stock continued to trend upward on Friday, trading
at $27.16 by mid-day.

CallidusCloud Steps Up Call Center SPM Game
CallidusCloud on Thursday launched ServiceMotivate, a call center sales
performance management, or SPM, solution. ServiceMotivate is tightly
integrated with Salesforce to track and reward call center agents based
on key performance indicators of their service center, such as quick
issue resolution and case closure rates, data quality improvements and
customer satisfaction.

FCC Reverses Course on Internet Privacy Rules
The Federal Communications Commission and the Federal Trade Commission
on Tuesday issued a joint statement following the FCC's temporary stay
of data security regulations. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai and FTC Acting
Chairman Maureen K. Ohlhausen issued the statement to address the FCC's
decision, in essence, to overturn rules designed to bolster broadband
consumer privacy.

Time to Get Serious About IoT Cybersecurity
Both companies and individuals will have incredible opportunities ahead
with the Internet of Things. IoT is starting to combine with AI, cloud-
based services, and many other new segments, creating a very fertile
growing field. However, it also poses a growing threat for security. A
secure IoT framework does not yet exist. That's where the new IoT
Cybersecurity Alliance comes into play.

YouTube Jumps into the Live TV Streaming Fray
YouTube has jumped headfirst into the growing market for live streaming
television with the announcement of YouTube TV, a service aimed squarely
at cord cutters. The $35-a-month service will offer live sitcoms,
dramas, news and sports from ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, ESPN, CW, Telemundo and
other networks. It will include local TV stations offering news and
sports in broadcast areas where customers live.

How Deeply Could Bribery Scandal Wound Samsung?
South Korean prosecutors on Tuesday indicted Samsung head Lee Jae-yong
and four other executives on bribery and embezzlement charges, following
a lengthy investigation into Lee's ties with impeached president Park
Geun-hye and her confidant, Choi Soon-sil. Charges against Lee, vice
chairman of Samsung Group, include pledging bribes to organizations tied
to Choi.

New Rules
One of the foundational ideas of business is the Pareto analysis, which
tries to identify the small portion of factors that are responsible for
the majority of business results. You know -- 80 percent of profits come
from 20 percent of the customer base, and similar observations. Vilfredo
Pareto formulated a business classic that we now refer to simply as "the
80/20 rule."

Snap Sells Itself as Camera Company as IPO Nears
As it approaches its IPO, Snap, maker of the popular Snapchat messaging
app, is positioning itself as a camera company. "We feel like we're
really at the beginning of what cameras can do," said Snap CEO Evan
Spiegel. "Before, cameras were the best way to perfectly save or record
something that you saw. They sort of helped augment memory -- but now,
you know, cameras augment the way that we talk."

Today's Story Highlights

Qualcomm, Microsoft to Give Cloud Services a Speed Boost
Qualcomm has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to accelerate
next-generation cloud services on the 10nm Qualcomm Centriq 2400 ARM-
based platform. The collaboration will span multiple future generations
of hardware, software and systems. The two have been working for several
years on ARM-based server enablement, optimizing a version of Windows
Server for ARM running on the Centriq 2400.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84359.html

WikiLeaks Dumps CIA Hacking Docs Online
WikiLeaks on Tuesday dumped thousands of classified documents onto the
Internet, exposing hacking programs used by the CIA. The torrent of data
is just the first in a series of dumps WikLeaks is calling "Vault 7."
This first installment includes 8,761 documents and files stolen from an
isolated high-security network within the CIA's Center for Cyber
Intelligence in Langley, Virginia.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84353.html

The Terminal Is Where Linux Begins - and Where You Should, Too
Once you have a sense of the vast potential of Linux, you may be eager
to experience it for yourself. Given the complexity of modern operating
systems, it can be hard to know where to start. As with many things,
computers can be better understood through a breakdown of their
evolution and operation. The terminal is not only where computers began,
but also where their real power still resides.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84356.html

IBM's Quantum Leap Could Redefine 'Magic'
No, I'm not talking about that Quantum Leap . IBM just made a really
interesting announcement in that it is enhancing its online quantum
computer systems with a new API and improving its simulator so it can
handle 20 qubits. Listening to the prebriefing was a bit like pretending
I was Penny trying to understand Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory .

Google Invites Open Source Devs to Give E2EMail Encryption a Go
Google has released its E2EMail encryption code to open source as a way
of pushing development of the technology. "Google has been criticized
over the amount of time and seeming lack of progress it has made in
E2EMail encryption, so open sourcing the code could help the project
proceed more quickly," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
That will not stop critics, though, he added.

GIT CEO Adriana Gascoigne: More Women in Tech Means More Problems Solved
Prior to founding Girls in Tech, Adriana Gascoigne was one of very few
women working at a startup. "I'd look around the room every day and see
that there was a huge problem of representation. I knew we needed to
change the culture of the company to recruit more women and benefit more
women, but we also needed diversity in product development ... to make a
better product," she recalled.

The Morning After: Car, quadcopter or both?

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, March 09, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

After a week, the Nintendo Switch has made an impression on our editors, but is it a good one? It’s also time for a big PS4 update, and there’s a concept flying car that’s so ridiculous it might just work.

It’s a group thing

The Nintendo Switch: One week in

The Nintendo Switch: One week in

You’ve heard our impressions of the Switch after 48 hours, with time for a full review, and now Engadget editors sound off on their first week experiences. Mat Smith is happy with one good game as long as that game is Zelda, Kris Naudus has more questions than answers and Tim Seppala is enjoying its social aspects.

Sasuke’s coming

The PS4 update with Boost Mode and external storage support arrives today

The PS4 update with Boost Mode and external storage support arrives today

PlayStation 4 owners are getting several long-awaited features in the new 4.50 update that launched earlier today. Dubbed “Sasuke,” its biggest feature is support for external hard drives, making PS4 the only current gen console where you can easily choose between swapping out the internal unit or plugging an extra drive via USB. It also adds 3D Blu-ray support in the PS VR headset, and for PS4 Pro owners, Boost Mode brings framerate and load time enhancements for otherwise unoptimized games.

It can’t get smaller than this

IBM built an atomic storage device

IBM built an atomic storage device

You’re probably impressed by your 32GB USB stick, but IBM’s latest storage advancement blows that away. Researchers have managed to store a bit of information on a single holmium atom. Traditional hard drive tech needs 100,000 atoms to store a single bit of information.

But you can’t get a text back

Tinder Select caters to the beautiful and/or wealthy elite

You might have a Tinder account, but are you on Tinder Select? TechCrunch cited an anonymous source revealing this invite-only upper room of the dating app for “celebrities and people who do really well on Tinder.”

Why not both?

Airbus’ ‘Pop.Up‘ concept turns a car into a quadcopter

Airbus’ ‘Pop.Up‘ concept turns a car into a quadcopter

The problem with any “flying car” is that usually you only need one part or the other. This Airbus concept vehicle solves that problem with a modular design that can swap its passenger capsule to match with four wheels or four rotors. It’s also fully autonomous, so just tell the Pop.Up where you’re going, and it will select the appropriate accessory.

SPACE TRUCKING

‘No Man’s Sky’ update adds a lot more than just ground vehicles

‘No Man’s Sky’ update adds a lot more than just ground vehicles

After what many felt was a disappointing launch, Hello Games has produced a big feature update for No Man’s Sky. The Pathfinder Update brings sweet planet-exploring buggies, new ships, a Permadeath mode and the ability to share your custom-created bases online. If you have a PS4 Pro, it’s even ready for 4K and HDR -- if you’ll give the game another chance.

But wait, there's more...

1. 'Middle-earth: Shadow of War' pushes at the limited boundaries laid out by 'Shadow of Mordor'

2. Tesla's new solar energy station will power Hawaii at night

3. The Big Picture: The world's largest solar farm, from space

4. Snapchat screws up its 'tribute' filters again

5. Computer Love: Hands-on with Trak's at-home sperm analysis kit

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.
