Twitter Adds Heft to Anti-Harassment Toolbox
Twitter on Wednesday announced that over the next few months it will
roll out changes designed to increase the safety of users, including the
following: Its algorithms will help identify accounts as they engage in
abusive behavior, so the burden no longer will be on victims to report
it; and users will be able to restrict their tweets to followers for a
set amount of time.

USB-C Port, Curved Display Top Latest iPhone Rumor List
Apple poked a hornet's nest when it removed the standard headphone jack
from the iPhone 7. It may do it again by replacing the Lightning port
with USB-C in the next iPhone. The Lightning port, introduced in 2012,
is used to charge and connect accessories to the iPhone, but Apple
reportedly plans to swap it for USB-C, which the company has been
introducing into its computer lines.

Zorin Desktop Is a Crowd Pleaser
Zorin OS developers on Tuesday released Version 12.1, offering Linux
users a patchwork of software and hardware updates with some performance
enhancements and bug fixes. Zorin 12.1 follows the introduction three
months ago of the project's 12 series. It is a minor update, but the
amount of tweaking applied makes it worth upgrading to the .1 release.
For instance, it has an updated hardware stack.

Cloudflare Nips Cloudbleed Bug in the Bud
Cloudflare has fixed the Cloudbleed software bug responsible for a
buffer overrun problem that caused its edge servers to return private
information in response to some HTTP requests. That private information
included HTTP cookies, authentication tokens and HTTP POST bodies.
However, SSL private keys weren't leaked, said Cloudflare CTO John
Graham-Cumming in an online post.

Nokia 3310 Pushes Nostalgia Buttons
HMD Global, owner of the Nokia phone brand, on Sunday reintroduced the
classic 3310 feature phone at the MWC, along with a line of brand new
Nokia smartphones that run on the Android platform. The relaunch of the
3310 is the reimagination of one of the world's best-selling feature
phones as a sleek, lightweight device that features 22 hours of talk
time and an entire month of standby time.

Zero W Joins Raspberry Pi Family on 5th Birthday
Raspberry Pi turned 5 years old on Tuesday, and to mark the occasion,
the foundation announced a new member of the family, the Raspberry Pi
Zero W, and a case to go with it. Raspberry Pi Zero W adds wireless LAN
and Bluetooth capabilities to tiny computer's growing list of
capabilities. Priced at just $10, the device is affordable for anyone
who wants to take the Pi for a test drive.

Google's Jigsaw Launches Troll-Thwarting API
A new tool is available to check the persistent harassment of online
trolls. Google's Jigsaw think tank last week launched Perspective, an
early stage technology that uses machine learning to help neutralize
trolls. Perspective reviews comments and scores them based on their
similarity to comments people have labeled as toxic, or that are likely
to result in someone leaving a conversation.

Mobile World Congress: Gigabit Wireless and the Anti-iPhone Set
One of the biggest disappointments at this year's Mobile World Congress
is that the Samsung Galaxy 8 phone won't make it. The Galaxy line has
been the ultimate iPhone fighter. Rumors around the anniversary edition
of the iPhone suggest that it will do amazing, magical things, like 3D
selfies. OK, I'm really missing Steve Jobs at the moment -- who the hell
wants 3D selfies?!?

Steamed Over Steam
Where would the PC gaming market be without Steam, the digital
distribution platform that was developed by Valve Corporation more than
a decade ago? It likely would be in worse shape than it is now, but
that's not to say it would be bad. First, despite the repeated cries
that "PC gaming is dead," the state of PC gaming is actually pretty good
and PC gaming is very much alive because of Steam.

DebianDog Is a Useful Pocket Pup
DebianDog offers a lot of functionality and customization that frees
users from many of the restrictions of a Linux community tied up in
developmental red tape. DebianDog is fast and focused on getting work
done without a lot of distractions. However, it also is a disorganized
desktop environment that can leave new users floundering. Its look and
feel is eclectic, and documentation is sparse.

The Morning After: Nintendo Switch review

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, March 02, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

The Nintendo Switch goes on sale tomorrow, but our review of the dockable console is here today. Plus: a price drop for Oculus Rift and a status update on Windows phones.

Revolutionary, but it still needs work

Nintendo Switch review

Nintendo Switch review

It’s time to find out how the newest Nintendo console stacks up, and Devindra Hardawar came up with plenty of positives. With the Switch, Nintendo fixed its big mistakes from the Wii U and doubled down on that system’s best feature by making the entire thing a playable mobile device. There are some issues, including the extra cost for accessories like a Grip Charge for its controllers or the $70 Pro controller gamepad.

Two and a half hours of battery life playing Zelda means gamers on the go could be looking for an extra battery pack too. Still, the Switch brings Nintendo’s flair for innovation, and we’re expecting a steady flow of indie titles for you to play once the launch games get a bit stale.

The hunt for Windows Phone

The hunt for Windows Phone

Microsoft says it’s still committed to Windows phones, so it should be easy to find one at the world’s largest mobile event right? This is the idea that sent Mat Smith on the search for Windows Phone at MWC 2017, but what he found probably won’t surprise you

Say hello to Season 4

‘Overwatch’ adds a server browser

‘Overwatch’ adds a server browser

Blizzard continues to tweak Overwatch and now its online shooter has a server browser on all platforms. That means players can create (or find) almost any game type they can imagine, instead of just sticking to ones the developers pick. It’s also time for the competitive bracket’s fourth season, with some new play tweaks and changes to make tanking to the bottom a less attractive option.

The Oculus Rift headset and Touch controller each get a $100 price drop

The Oculus Rift headset and Touch controller each get a $100 price drop

If you’ve been considering a VR upgrade, now could be the time. Oculus announced during GDC 2017 that it’s dropping prices. The Rift headset now sells for $499, while the Touch controllers are down to $99. Extra sensors are cheaper too, dropping $20 to $59. After a year on the market, it’s about time for a price cut, and recent buyers (within the last 30 days) can check in for a $50 credit.
