The Morning After: What if you already had a Nintendo Switch?

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, February 17, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

We made it to Friday. But what about yesterday? Some poor soul got their hands on Nintendo’s new console two weeks in advance -- but has no games to play on it, Apple is tinkering with a 4K TV box. Oh, and if you’d like some bedtime reading, may I suggest Mark Zuckerberg’s lengthy treatise on the future of Facebook?

At least one retailer accidentally shipped Nintendo's next console two weeks early.

A new Nintendo console... but nothing to play

A new Nintendo console... but nothing to play

One eager Nintendo Switch buyer saw his new console arrived two weeks ahead of schedule, Unfortunately, he has absolutely nothing to play on it. "I have no games at all," he told the popular gaming forum NeoGAF. "All I can do is flip through the menus." It looks like Nintendo has taken a better direction with its console UI, landing somewhere between Android and the PS4’s interface. Just a few weeks to go, you brave soul.

Beyond 1080p

Bloomberg: There’s a 4K Apple TV box on the way

Even with an App Store onboard, the Apple TV hasn’t revolutionized TV in the way some analysts predicted. Still, the company is working on this project, shifting execs around to possibly revive stalled plans for a Sling TV-esque “skinny bundle” of channels. For now, however, Bloomberg reports there’s a 4K and HDR-capable version of the box in the pipeline, but that should be the only big difference.

New boss, new direction.

Google Fiber refocuses, may shift towards wireless

While gigabit fiber connections everywhere are a wonderful dream, rolling it out can get pricey, fast. That’s why Google Fiber is pulling back from previous expansion plans, and shedding employees. Under a new CEO, it may look to roll out high speed connections that “follow” users around town like WiFi, or expand the Webpass wireless service it acquired.

Competition is good, again.

AT&T will offer unlimited data for all customers

AT&T will offer unlimited data for all customers

Well that didn't take long. Just a few days after Verizon announced it would start offering an unlimited data plan after years of selling capped data packages, AT&T will be doing the same. As of tomorrow, AT&T will let any current or potential customer buy an unlimited data plan -- until now, only DirecTV customers were able to purchased unlimited data from the carrier. Stream, my friends. Download!

"Ok Google, order toilet paper."

Google Assistant now helps with your shopping on Google Home

Google Assistant now helps with your shopping on Google Home

Amazon's Echo and its Alexa virtual assistant had a big head start before Google debuted Home, but the company has revealed a big addition that could strike at the heart of Alexa’s domain: shopping. You can now use Google Assistant on the company's connected smart speaker to order goods from its Express shopping service.

Does that really need 5,700 words to explain?

Zuckerberg challenges Facebook to build the foundation of a global community

Zuckerberg challenges Facebook to build the foundation of a global community

If you have some time today, you can peruse Facebook’s new mission statement. In a sprawling essay, Mark Zuckerberg challenges his company to deal with issues like finding the line between responsible filtering and censorship across different communities. In his vision, Facebook can be a part of a social infrastructure. Of the few concrete plans mentioned, one focuses on connecting people by their interests -- book club, anyone?

But wait, there's more...

1. Samsung's South Korean leader has been arrested for bribery

2. ZTE announces the first gigabit LTE-ready phone

3. Hasbro's Proto Max robot dog teaches coding on the sly

4. Lenovo is being dragged down by its mobile business

5. NASA wants to send humans aboard the first SLS flight

Today's Story Highlights

Watson Joins Cybersecurity Warriors' Ranks
IBM this week announced Watson for Cyber Security, a powerful new ally
for organizations that want to protect their data from Net marauders.
The new offering bolsters the ability of information security pros to
analyze the flood of information from the roughly 200,000 events that
pour into their Security Operations Centers, or SOCs, every day. As much
as 80 percent of it is unstructured data.

Apple's Cook Blasts 'Mind Killing' Fake News
Apple CEO Tim Cook has called for a campaign against fake news. Its
purveyors -- largely interested only in getting the most clicks -- are
defeating the people who are trying to tell the most truth, he said.
Fake news is "killing people's minds in a way," Cook remarked. The
worldwide epidemic of fake news requires a crackdown by both government
and tech, he suggested.

Munich City Government to Dump Linux Desktop
Munich city officials turned lots of heads 10 years ago, when they voted
to swap out Microsoft Windows with LiMux -- a custom desktop version of
the Linux operating system, based on Ubuntu Linux. The current municipal
government wants to dump LiMux and replace its 15,000 computers with
Windows 10. The city's general council this week voted to investigate
the costs of building a Windows 10 client.

Samsung's Chromebook Pro Earns Respect
Some early reviewers of the Samsung Chromebook Pro characterized it as a
"MacBook killer," but others were more restrained in their enthusiasm.
Jointly developed with Google and first demoed at CES 2017, the
Chromebook Pro is slated for release next month. Samsung's Chromebooks
basically are lightweight productivity tools that rely heavily on access
to cloud-based resources.

Lumina Adds Luster to Linux Desktop
The Lumina Desktop Environment desktop is a standout in the crowded
field of Linux GUIs. Lumina is a compact, lightweight, XDG-compliant
graphical desktop environment developed from scratch. Its focus is on
giving users a streamlined, efficient work environment with minimal
system overhead. Lumina was first developed for the BSD family of
operating systems, such as FreeBSD and TrueOS.

Tesla Goes Underground and Uber Takes to the Skies: The Birth of Magic
As in crazy short, in a very short period of time we have two very
different companies looking at two very different ways to eliminate
traffic. Tesla wants to tunnel under the ground to avoid traffic, while
Uber wants to fly overhead. Transportation has been a tad static for the
last 40 years or so, and that apparently is about to change big time.
This is just the start.

Capsule8 Launches Linux-Based Container Security Platform
Cybersecurity startup Capsule8 this week announced that it has raised
$2.5 million to launch the industry's first container-aware, real-time
threat protection platform designed to protect legacy and next-
generation Linux infrastructures from existing and potential attacks.
CEO John Viega, CTO Dino Dai Zovi and Chief Scientist Brandon Edwards,
all veteran hackers, cofounded the firm.

Gadgets: Gaming's New Virtual Reality Frontier and Personal Cargo Robots
Regular readers will know that I've played games my entire life. I hold
deep reverence for the care and attention that go into creating these
experiences, and I've rarely met a game I didn't want to conquer. Yet I
am nervous about virtual reality. I've tried it and found those
disorientating worlds difficult to handle, though I suspect that over
time I could grow more accustomed to it.

The Morning After: Let's start talking about the next iPhone

Engadget Email Newsletter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, February 16, 2017.

Hey, good morning!

Welcome to the return of iPhone rumors. It’s already that wonderful time of the year as leaks, rumors and supply chain-side intel offer a glimpse into what Apple’s cooking. Or not. Global gaming show E3 is starting sooner this year, with Xbox set to reveal its new console on the weekend before it begins. And like Pokémon? How about more of ‘em?

iPhone Touchbar?

iPhone 8 'function area' rumored to replace home button

iPhone 8 'function area' rumored to replace home button<br />

Since MWC 2017 can’t grab all the mobile hype, the iPhone rumor machine is already off and running. We’ve already heard that Apple may be planning to release two iPhone 7s models this fall, plus a pricier iPhone 8 with an edge-to-edge OLED screen. Now, a note from analyst Ming-chi Kuo suggests that while dropping the traditional home button, the iPhone 8 will dedicate part of its display as a function area, with controls that switch based on what you’re doing (similar to Apple’s Touchbar on the new MacBook Pro).

No, not the coffee!

‘Prey’ makes you fear everything

‘Prey’ makes you fear everything<br />

Prey is all about deception. The first-person shooter starts off simple enough: You're a scientist beginning a new job at your brother's massive research company. You wake up in your bedroom, do some exploring and board a helicopter on top of your roof to head to work, where you're then subjected to some first-day testing. Then all hell breaks loose. Aliens run rampant in the compound, and you black out. Then you wake up in your bedroom again, just like before, as if the first 30 minutes of the game were a bad dream. Then things get weird.

Because competition works

Why is Verizon offering unlimited data again?

After a few years of running from unlimited data plans, Verizon is offering them once again (with a 22GB asterisk). So what makes now the right time? Nathan Ingraham digs into why T-Mobile’s ‘Uncarrier” pitch has become compelling enough that Verizon felt forced to open the gates.

Its E3 event is moving to Sunday.

Microsoft will unveil Xbox Project Scorpio on June 11th

Microsoft will unveil Xbox Project Scorpio on June 11th<br />

Last year at E3, Microsoft pre-announced its big hardware upgrade for this year’s show: Project Scorpio. The new box should bring true 4K gaming capability to the Xbox platform, but will that be enough to narrow the gap with Sony? We’ll find out what the company has planned for 2017 on Sunday night ahead of E3 at 5PM ET.

It’s like a snorkel for your Shamrock shake.

McDonald's has re-engineered drinking straws

McDonald's has re-engineered drinking straws<br />

McDonald's thinks the humble drinking straw needed a redesign. It drafted in a team of robotic and aerospace engineers to make something to help push its new two-flavor Chocolate Shamrock Shake. It has two holes and looks like a snorkel. But there’s science here. Almost too much.

Yes, people are still playing

'Pokémon Go' adds 80 creatures from 'Gold' and 'Silver' this week

'Pokémon Go' adds 80 creatures from 'Gold' and 'Silver' this week

The first big Pokémon Go upgrade for 2017 is rolling out this week, bringing new monsters from the Johto region, like Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile. Their addition will also mean some new evolutions for old monsters, while the gameplay for collecting monsters has been tweaked slightly. It’s still the same game, though, and as the weather warms up once again, we’ll see if it can lure players back to their local Pokéstops.

This discovery could lead to smarter robots.

Your brain always has a backup plan

You may not always be consciously considering a Plan B when you're making a decision, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Queen's University researchers have discovered that the human brain's motor neurons will prepare for multiple actions before making a decision. The findings suggest that the brain interprets the environment as a range of potential actions, and that you're always considering options even if you only ever settle on one.

But wait, there's more...

1. IMAX opens first VR theater in Los Angeles

2. Verizon reportedly reduces its Yahoo offer by $250 million

3. Republicans call for investigation into EPA use of encrypted chats
