Netflix Surprises Itself With Gangbusters Membership Growth
Netflix generated $8.3 billion in global streaming revenue in 2016, with
35 percent year-over-year growth, it reported Wednesday. The company
ended last year with 93.8 million members, including 19 million net
additions -- up from 17.4 million new subscribers in 2015. Netflix's
global revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 grew by 41 percent year-
over-year to $2.4 billion, and 7.05 million net new members joined
during that time period.

Pipedrive Attracts Funds for Global Expansion
Pipedrive, a CRM manager that targets the end-user salesperson, has
raised $17 million in a round of Series B funding from an investor group
led by Atomico. Two of the company's original investors, Bessemer
Venture Partners and Rembrandt Ventures, participated in the new round
as well. Atomico partner Teddie Wardi will join Pipedrive's board to
offer advice and support to the firm.

Why Companies Botch Customer Care
Do your customers come first? Companies spend a fortune to win and keep
their customers. They advertise and market their products and services
like crazy. Because of that cost, you would think every company would
want to keep its customers happy. It's more cost-effective to keep an
existing customer than to win a new one. If that's the case, why do some
companies screw up customer care so badly?

Yahoo and the Year of Living Dangerously
FastComputer: Fussy but Fixable
New LinkedIn Site Design Encourages Engagement

Today's Story Highlights

Yahoo and the Year of Living Dangerously
If there is a lesson to be drawn from Internet search giant Yahoo's
hellish past year, it is a grimly illustrative one: Never assume a
cybersecurity disaster can't get worse. Last September, the Internet
portal disclosed that it had suffered the most damaging and far-reaching
data breach in history -- only to then announce in December the
discovery of a second, earlier, and even larger hack.

FastComputer: Fussy but Fixable
FastComputer Linux is a disappointing experience that almost fails. It
is poorly designed, has little community support, and lacks its own home
base and identity, all of which contribute to an identity crisis. Its
home -- on Sourceforge.com -- lacks much in attractiveness, as does the
distro. The Linux OS offers developers and users choice among desktop
options and OS standards.

New LinkedIn Site Design Encourages Engagement
LinkedIn has announced a new look tied to a complete overhaul of its
technology architecture, which brings conversations and content front
and center. The redesign brings the LinkedIn desktop in line with the
mobile browser version launched in 2015. LinkedIn will roll out its new
desktop globally over the next few weeks. Among the changes are a
streamlined navigation bar and smarter messaging.

The Morning After: A faster Tesla Model X and anti-drone guns in action.

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, January 20, 2017.

Hey, good morning!

Welcome to Friday morning. We’ve got new smartphone teasers, anti-drone guns in action, an even faster Tesla Model X, and so much more.

WTF

Samsung will reveal what went wrong with the Galaxy Note 7

Samsung will reveal what went wrong with the Galaxy Note 7
Months after its stunning recall, we still don’t know exactly why Samsung’s most recent phablet had a tendency to overheat. The company’s internal investigation has apparently reached a conclusion however, and its results will be revealed in a livestreamed press conference this Sunday night at 8PM ET.

Anti-drone eagles are better.

Swiss authorities have added another security measure for this year's World Economic Forum in Davos: anti-drone guns. Bloomberg spotted local police preparing HP 47 Counter UAV Jammers to make sure no unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) gets too close to the venue, whether it's sent by a spy organization or just a nosy onlooker.

The FF 91 lost its speed record before it could even get started.

Tesla cleared by NHTSA after investigation

Tesla cleared by NHTSA after investigation
Good news for Tesla today, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concluded its investigation into the company’s Autopilot and emergency braking features without finding any defects. The investigation came after a fatal accident when a Model S with Autopilot engaged ran into a tractor trailer crossing the highway in front of it.

In slightly less-safe news, a demonstration of its Ludicrous Plus software update proved the Model X can best the Faraday Future FF91’s 0-60mph time.

Not quite as advertised

AirTV awaiting update

SlingTV’s AirTV box went on sale almost as soon as it was announced, and the first units have arrived in customer’s homes. The bad news, however is that they don’t have the same features we saw demonstrated at CES. The company says that was beta software, which will roll out soon as an update, providing better integration between streaming and OTA broadcast channels.

Nougat flavor

Samsung starts rolling out Android 7.0

For its less-explosive flagship phones, Samsung has an update instead of an apology. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are starting to get their Nougat Android updates, with new Performance Mode and Samsung Pass features. Split screen abilities are updated to the new standards, while the Quick Panel and notifications have both been tweaked. The only question now, is when will your carrier will actually roll the update out?

Pictures can tell you a lot.

This single image of the Nintendo Switch tells us three things
Nintendo has shown precious little of the Switch's user interface so far. Now, an image tweeted out (and deleted) by indie developer Nicalis tell us a lot more: The Switch may have multiple users, menu themes and a couple of unannounced games.

Coming February 26th.

LG teases the G6's launch for February

LG is sending out teasers for the G6 that'll debut the day before MWC 2017 kicks off in Spain. There's not much to be gleaned from the invitation, beyond that the unveiling will happen in Barcelona at lunchtime on February 26th. We know that the company has rowed back on modular design after the G5's lukewarm reception. The company has also said that the G6 will have an 18:9 display, meaning that it'll be a little taller than a regular 16:9 smartphone screen. The rest will just be happy little surprises along the way.

But wait, there's more...

1. Julian Assange says he's willing to return to the US...but isn't doing it just yet

2. Donald Trump trades in his Android for a 'secure' device

3. Harvard-developed robotic sleeve wraps around your heart to help it keep beating

4. Kymco scooter's smart dashboard brings notifications and customization

5. Rick Perry didn't understand the role of the Department of Energy

Luckey Dons Virtual Flak Jacket for Zenimax Testimony
Palmer Luckey on Wednesday denied that he stole proprietary code from
ZeniMax Media, in the little-known company's blockbuster $2 billion
lawsuit against Oculus VR and Facebook. ZeniMax has alleged that in
2012, when Luckey was just a video game enthusiast, he corresponded with
John Carmack, who allegedly used proprietary hardware and software
information to develop the Oculus Rift VR headset.

Google Gives Google+ Some Nips and Tucks
Google has announced three new updates to Google+ in an effort to revive
interest in the faltering product. The added features will be rolled out
next week, when the old Google+ layout will vanish. Lower quality
comments will be hidden, although Google didn't explain how or by whom
comments will be judged. Google has tweaked the Google+ UI to display
more posts and less white space.

Microsoft Hardens Latest Windows Version Against Hackers
Microsoft has fortified the latest version of Windows to make it more
secure than previous editions, but the strongest protections will be
available only to those willing to pay a steep price for them. Windows
10 Anniversary Update has introduced many mitigation techniques in core
Windows components and the Microsoft Edge browser, researchers Matt Oh
and Elia Florio wrote in a blog post last week.
