The Morning After: New 'Overwatch' event and Snowden is staying in Russia

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, January 19, 2017.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

We’ve got a fresh batch of Fujifilm cameras, 12 million declassified CIA files and a new special event for Overwatch.

900p is the new 1080p

‘Zelda’ on Nintendo Switch won’t run in native 1080p

‘Zelda’ on Nintendo Switch won’t run in native 1080p
Thinking about upgrading your Nintendo console to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? The company tells IGN that this adventure will be rendered in 720p on the Wii U, and 900p on its upcoming Switch. Of course, resolution isn’t everything, and while both versions are locked at 30fps, the Switch version will also feature higher quality environmental sounds.

The truth is probably not in there

12 million declassified CIA files are now available online

The CIA has posted a treasure trove of documents online for the first time. That means you no longer have to actually visit the National Archives to get your fix of UFO reports, intelligence bulletins and more info from between the 1940s and 1990.

Fate has brought two warring kingdoms together in a bitter clash.

Fans of tactical RPGs will have a new on-the-go option soon, in the form of Fire Emblem Heroes. The free mobile game is coming to Android first on February 2nd, with an iOS release “soon.” (Also, Android gamers, you should know Super Mario Run is due in March.)

After the Olympics, Halloween, and Christmas (did we miss any?), the next big Overwatch event has been announced, and it’s celebrating the Chinese New Year. There’s no word on exactly what’s in store, but some new skins, emotes and outfits are a good bet. The fun starts Tuesday.

Cameras, cameras, cameras

Fujifilm announced a slew of new cameras while you were sleeping. They include the $6,500 medium-format GFX 50S that’s arriving in late February, and the latest entry in its X100 line, the $1,300 X100F, which may be its best fixed-lens camera to date. Last but not least, the $900 X-T20 updates its X-T10 with features like 4K video and a 24.3MP sensor.

We liked the earlier versions better

Good ‘til 2020

Russia extends Snowden’s residency permit for another three years

Edward Snowden is not receiving clemency (yet, anyway), however his stay in Russia is safe for the time being. The government updated its position on the NSA leaker, extending his residency permit into 2020. He’s been there since 2013, and according to his lawyer, could apply for citizenship after another year.

Product placement wins again

'Final Fantasy XV' tricked me into buying Cup Noodles

'Final Fantasy XV' tricked me into buying Cup Noodles

Square-Enix apparently used all that development time to sign up sponsorship deals, since the newest Final Fantasy game is filled with product placement. Sean Buckley caved to temptation and nostalgia, but with Cup Noodles as the result, maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Low PPO

Arctic’s GMO apple slices are about to go on sale

Midwestern grocery customers will see something new on shelves in February and March. That’s because Arctic is ready to sell its Golden Delicious apples that are genetically modified. The tweaked apples can go more than three weeks without oxidizing after they’re cut, bruised or bitten into.

But wait, there's more...

1. Netflix finished 2016 with over 93 million subscribers

2. Adoptly's Tinder-style swiping feels all wrong

3. Twitter sells its Fabric developer platform to Google

4. Slack adds long-awaited threaded messaging feature

5. CBS All Access' 'Star Trek: Discovery' faces an indefinite delay

6. Tesla will manufacture Model 3 parts at the Gigafactory

The Morning After: The Army's prototype hoverbike, Jerry Seinfeld heads to Netflix

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Wednesday, January 18, 2017.

Welcome to hump day!

It’s Wednesday morning and Raspberry Pi has made a super-powered PC-on-a-stick, the state of AAA cloud gaming and a look at the Army’s prototype hoverbike. Grab your coffee. We'll wait.

The next Raspberry Pi is aimed at advanced users and manufacturers.

Raspberry Pi gives its PC-on-a-stick a big speed boost

Raspberry Pi gives its PC-on-a-stick a big speed boost

Raspberry Pi has taken its latest computing board and squished it onto the stick-sized Compute Module 3, giving it about ten times the power of the original Compute Module. The idea is to “provide the 'team in a garage' with easy access to the same technology as the big guys." As such, manufacturers can add it into a dumb device to make it smart, since it can single-handedly do processing, memory and routeing chores. At the same time, it should be relatively easy to program for anyone with some Pi experience.

Why LiquidSky thinks the time is right for cloud gaming

Why LiquidSky thinks the time is right for cloud gaming
Yes, some have tried to do AAA game streaming before, but LiquidSky CEO Ian McLoughlin says his company will be the first to do it right. As he tells Jessica Conditt, advanced technology that runs virtual PCs on cloud servers combined with a business model that allows for free access will make this different from OnLive, Gaikai or GeForce Now. After two years of testing, LiquidSky will open to the public in late February -- we hope it’s ready.

No pardon for Snowden

Obama commutes most of Chelsea Manning’s sentence

Obama commutes most of Chelsea Manning’s sentence

In a slew of commutations just hours before leaving office, President Obama commuted the sentences of 273 people. That included former Army analyst Chelsea Manning, who leaked files to Wikileaks in 2010 that included video of a US helicopter attack in Baghdad that killed two journalists. General James Cartwright received a pardon, as he was facing up to 5 years in prison for leaking details of the Stuxnet malware that sabotaged Iran’s nuclear program.

One prominent name was missing, however, as Edward Snowden did not receive a pardon. Obama had previously said the PRISM leaker would have to return and face the charges, and according to the White House, he never filed paperwork seeking clemency.

This former Kickstarter project is still moving along, as the DoD hosted a demo of the “hoverbike” on January 10th. Officially dubbed the JTARV, it’s a rectangular quadcopter intended for carrying supplies to battlefield positions quickly and autonomously.

Don't let its minuscule footprint fool you.

Zotac's tiny gaming PC packs VR-capable power

Zotac's tiny gaming PC packs VR-capable power

The Zbox Magnus EN1070K is deceptively powerful, thanks to a new i5 Kaby Lake CPU from Intel and NVIDIA GTX 1070 GPU shoved inside its ultra-compact case. That makes for a gaming PC powerful enough to run a detailed virtual reality environment, and still fit inside your backpack. The only thing missing now is a price or a release date. (It won’t be cheap.)

How an ‘Atmospheric Lens’ could change the battlefield of the future

How an ‘Atmospheric Lens’ could change the battlefield of the future

Ready to discuss future-weapons? An idea from BAE envisions high-flying aircraft that use lasers to alter the Earth’s atmosphere, creating a lens. That effect could be enough to protect from other laser attacks, interfere with enemy communications or act as a magnifying glass to aid recon.

Nexus-like Android Wear watches are on their way

LG’s Watch Sport and Watch Style are due alongside Android Wear 2.0 in February.

For months, rumors have circulated of Google planning a pair of flagship smartwatches -- not Google-designed, but certainly intended as reference models like Nexus phones used to be. But what will they be like? Well, a leak suggests they’ll be LG-made... And look something like this.

But wait, there's more...

1. Jerry Seinfeld is going to Netflix, and he's bringing 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee'

2. Mark Zuckerberg testifies in Oculus VR trial

3. Autopilot update rolls out to all Teslas with HW2 hardware

4. TV this week: 'Voltron' on Netflix, 'Flame in the Flood' on PS4 and 'Hunted' on CBS

5. Gravity wave ripples across Venus' hellish atmosphere
