Medium Slashes Staff, Aims to Fix 'Broken' Model
Medium, the once-promising platform led by Twitter cofounder Ev
Williams, is losing about a third of its workforce and will undergo a
radical overhaul to fix what the CEO called a "broken" business model --
advertising-supported online publishing. Williams touted the company's
successes in a post announcing the layoffs, but said that change was
needed to address several major business shortfalls.

Apple's Great App Store Sales May Not Signify Much
Apple's App Store racked up an all-time high of $240 million in sales on
the first day of this year. On the whole, 2016 was a very good year for
Apple devs, who earned more than $20 billion for their apps. "Apple has
always had the most profitable ecosystem and app market in terms of
revenue per user and price per app," said Holger Mueller, a principal
analyst at Constellation Research.

Which Wireless Carrier Is Best for You?
Which wireless carrier is best? Many studies are undertaken every year,
and while they are interesting and accurate, they often are not that
useful in selecting the best carrier for you. Why? Simple. They are
generic studies, but you are not a generic customer. If wireless
performance were the same for every customer in every location, then the
studies would be helpful -- but that's not the case.

Bitcoin Rides the Uncertainty Wave
The price of bitcoin soared to a new three-year high on Monday,
surpassing the $1,000 mark for the first time, in response to economic
and geopolitical uncertainty in China following the U.S. presidential
election. The price of bitcoin stood at more than $1,025 in late trading
on Tuesday, after rising to nearly $1,030. The market cap was $16.49
billion, according to the CoinDesk index.

Customer Service Takes a Turn
It's widely understood that new customer service channels such as
social, email, knowledge bases and the like have left the service agent
with harder problems to solve. Those channels are here to stay, because
when they work well, they solve problems for pennies. It can cost many
dollars to resolve an issue through the efforts of conventional agents.
So there's a decided bias for self-service.

Engagio CEO Jon Miller: How to Land a Whale
"Traditional demand-based, lead-based marketing is like fishing with a
net," said Engagio CEO Jon Miller. "You run campaigns and marketing
programs, and stuff comes out the other end. What the account-based
world is all about is that you have a list of names, but you don't wait
around to see if those big fish swim into your net. Instead, you go
fishing with spears."

Evernote Toes the Privacy Line
Caught off guard by a huge backlash, Evernote recently abandoned its
plan to let staffers read customer notes under certain circumstances.
The plan would have allowed staffers to review private customer notes as
a means of assessing the accuracy of its new machine learning
technology. The company made a mistake in judgment, Evernote CEO Chris
O'Neil acknowledged.

Nvidia Lays Out Bold Strategy at CES
Nvidia offered a bold new strategy at this week's International CES in
Las Vegas. The company, which has been a leader in hardware graphics
technology for decades, recently has expanded into the realms of
artificial intelligence, deep learning and automotive tech. Graphical
support and video delivery will however remain a key component of the
company's strategy, according to Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang.

Floating Speakers, Neckbrace Audio, and Charming Caffeine Fixes
LG features twice in this edition of the column with two very different
but similarly strange speakers. The "Levitating Portable Speaker" has as
descriptive and accurate a name as the "Small Transparent Speaker" from
last month's edition of this column. You can call it "PJ9" if you prefer
the duller moniker. Yes, through the magic of electromagnets and a base
station, this speaker will levitate and pump out audio in every
direction.

Crowd Forms on Alexa Bandwagon
New additions to Amazon's growing ecosystem of Alexa-based products are
making a splash at CES this week. With a growing number of home
appliance, computer and electronics makers announcing integrations with
the company's digital assistant technology, the transformation to
automated homes and home offices appears to be taking place before our
eyes. Among the most notable integrations is Lenovo's Smart Assistant.

Google, FCA Test-Drive New Open Source Infotainment System
Google and FCA this week showcased a new in-auto infotainment platform
at CES in Las Vegas. The open source system combines Uconnect with
Android Auto. The companies demonstrated their concept design inside a
Chrysler 300 sedan at the show. The integration of Android and Uconnect
enables a system built for connectivity and compatibility with the
universe of popular Android applications.

Snapdragon-Powered AR Smartglasses Are the Real Deal
Qualcomm on Tuesday debuted its groundbreaking Snapdragon 835 system on
a chip at CES. Following the 835 launch, the company joined Osterhout
Design Group in unveiling two new ODG augmented reality headsets, the R-
8 and R-9, which are the first Snapdragon 835-powered devices to be
announced. The Snapdragon SoC is the first chip built using the ultra-
advanced 10nm FinFET process node.

Lenovo Surprises With Home Tech Play
Lenovo watchers expected the company to announce a number of new laptops
when CES rolled around, but the company surprised on Tuesday when it
also unveiled new products aimed at the home technology market. "The
Smart Assistant and Smart Storage line probably caught everyone off
guard," said Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights and
Strategy.

The Morning After: OLED TVs, airport robots, and motorbikes that won't fall down

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, January 06, 2017.

Hey, good morning!

We’ve reached the midpoint of CES, and we’re meeting airport robots, staring at self-balancing motorbikes and asking Ron Jeremy about his vision of the future. Of course.

You’ll never drop your bike in a parking lot again.

Honda's amazing self-balancing motorcycle defies gravity

Honda's Riding Assist know-how finally has a proper home. After years of researching balance technology in its Uni-Cub mobility vehicles, the company. Honda's bike doesn't just help a person keep a bike upright, though. The motorcycle also keeps itself upright, even without a rider.

Sex robots and holographic faces.

Ron Jeremy predicts porn's ... present?

Porn star Ron Jeremy’s vision of the sex industry’s future isn't so far off from the one being pushed by futurists and the media. He sees the return of big-budget porn, VR-connected male masturbators and sex robots with holographic faces. It could be a sexy future.

Too faithful to be considered a mockumentary.

'Star Trek' fan film loses fair use case, moves to jury trial

'Star Trek' fan film loses fair use case, moves to jury trial
After successfully raising over a million dollars to create a professional-grade homage to the Star Trek brand, producers of fan-flick “Axanar” were hit with a lawsuit. They were assured that it would be dropped, but were eventually still taken to court. The filmmakers stood their ground and argued a case of fair use, but ultimately lost.

Just feed it your boarding pass.

LG’s humanoid-sized Airport Guide Robot will do exactly that. Feed it your boarding pass and it will tell you how to get to your gate and when your flight is going to take off. Heck, it’ll even walk you to you boarding area.

Sony baked speakers into its new TV's OLED screen.

Sony's new 4K OLED TV is a thing of beauty

Sony's new 4K OLED TV is a thing of beauty
Sony didn't have too much to show at CES this year, but it did finally reveal its first OLED 4K TV. The horrifically named XBR-A1E comes in 55-, 65- or 77-inch sizes, capable of spitting out Ultra HD and high dynamic range (HDR) with ease. The most intriguing part, however, is the "Acoustic Surface," which integrates the speaker into the screen itself.

But wait, there's more...

1. Naughty America is persona non grata at the world's biggest tech show

2. Dell's new XPS 27 is an all-in-one with ten speakers and a lot of power

3. This e-paper backpack is the kind of crazy we deserve
