The Morning After: Amazon successfully delivers by drone and Yahoo's huge data breach

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Thursday, December 15, 2016.

Welcome to the Morning After!

This Thursday morning you’ll be reading about Yahoo’s huge data breach, Amazon’s first drone delivery (in time for the holidays!) and the not-so-whimsical journey that carbon dioxide makes around the globe each year.

The biggest breach ever?

Yahoo reports data theft affecting more than one billion accounts

Yahoo reports data theft affecting more than one billion accounts
How do you top a 2014 security breach that leaked info for 500 million accounts? If you’re Yahoo, apparently you reveal that another one in 2013 resulted in the theft of info (names, security questions and answers, and more) from over one billion email accounts. Also, the company believes that the unnamed state-sponsored hackers from the 2014 incident were using forged cookies to target specific accounts directly.

You always remember your first

Amazon’s first drone delivery

Amazon’s first drone delivery
In three years, Prime Air has gone from concept to reality, with Amazon sending its first delivery to a customer in Cambridge, England. Operating autonomously, it completed the order in just 13 minutes. These drones fly as high as 400 feet in the air while making deliveries, and Amazon says it will open the service up to hundreds of customers living near its fulfillment center in the city.

Just three bucks per month at launch

Amazon has decided to fully engage Netflix and is spinning out its streaming service to stand on its own feet. Prime Video has just launched in "200 countries and territories" around the world with a competition-bating introductory price of $3/€3 per month. However, it'll only be showing Amazon’s homemade shows.

LG’s new monitor will be ideal for new MacBook Pro owners. It supports 4K HDR with a single USB-C cable that can simultaneously charge your laptop and can also act as a USB hub. The 32-inch 4K HDR screen also going to be a very nice addition for gamers looking to upgrade, with support for console and PC HDR games as well.

Justice rains from above … and everywhere else too

Dolby Atmos comes to games, on Xbox One and Windows 10

We’ve only had a day or so of trying out Dolby Atmos audio in Blu-ray movies on the Xbox One, and now Microsoft announces it’s coming via games too. The first games ready to position audio within Dolby’s three-dimensional space (whether through your surround sound setup or headphones) will arrive in 2017. If you’re dying to try out the tech on movies, join the Insider program and then look under the Blu-ray player settings.

But wait, there's more...

1. Steam supports customizable inputs on your PS4 controllers

2. Trump adds CEOs of Tesla, Uber to his presidential policy forum

3. If you have a Netgear router, you need to read this

4. NASA's latest model shows a global CO2 journey over the course of a year

The Morning After: The macOS fix for short battery estimates, AirPods go on sale and "Funky Fantasy IV"

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Wednesday, December 14, 2016.

Hey, good morning! You look fabulous.

We’re halfway through the week, and you’re right -- something is missing on your Mac. Also, Apple’s AirPods are on sale and it’s time to meet Waymo.

Feature removals will continue until morale improves

Latest macOS update removes “battery time remaining” estimate

Latest macOS update removes “battery time remaining” estimate

macOS Sierra 10.12.2 has at least one undocumented change that you probably will notice. Besides an array of bugfixes and tweaks, it removes the “battery time remaining” estimate from the menu bar. According to Apple, rapidly changing power states make it too inaccurate, especially on new Intel Skylake-equipped Macbook Pros. The solution? Yank it.

If you’re reading this it’s too late

Apple AirPods finally go on sale

Apple AirPods finally go on sale

Apple’s wireless earbuds are finally available, but that doesn’t mean you’ll get a pair anytime soon. Estimated shipping time from Apple’s website quickly stretched beyond four weeks, however, and the company says they will be available in stores soon.

Somebody set us up the bomb

“Funky Fantasy IV” tries game localization via Google Translate

“Funky Fantasy IV” tries game localization via Google Translate

The effort put into localizing foreign games can have a huge impact on the experience. Most games get at least a decent translation effort, but one gamer went out of his way to show what happens if you just rely on Google Translate. Thanks to his custom software and a stream recording, you can experience “Final Fantasy IV” in a way its creators never intended.

Now Google’s self-driving car project is a solo company

As Google reshuffles its moonshot efforts, the company is spinning out its self-driving cars. Now that project is a company called Waymo, with former Hyundai exec John Krafcik serving as its CEO. Its mission: turning self-driving tech into a practical business. To do that, Waymo is looking at ridesharing, trucking and regular passenger vehicles.

GM made its year-end deadline of shipping production versions of its sub-$40k electric car, but only just barely. Three Bolt EVs have reached new owners in California, and more are on the way. It’s a small start, but a meaningful one while we keep waiting for Tesla and the Model 3.

But wait, there's more...

1. Nokia returns with a dumb phone

2. Neil Young's Pono music service will adjust streaming quality on the fly

3. Adobe Photoshop is ready for the MBP Touch Bar

4. Tinder's Apple TV app brings swiping to the big screen

Torvalds Releases Hefty Linux Kernel Update
Linus Torvalds this weekend announced Linux 4.9, which offers a number
of significant upgrades to the kernel. "I'm pretty sure this is the
biggest release we've ever had, at least in terms of commits," Torvalds
wrote. "If you look at the number of lines changed, we've had bigger
releases in the past but they've tended to be due to specific issues."

What Trump Should Do With Air Force One
For the next eight or so years, I think a lot of what many of us are
going to write will have something to do with what Donald Trump tweeted.
Granted, since that has been the case for much of the last year, we have
gotten comfortable with it. However, when Trump said he would kill the
deal for an updated Air Force One, it hit me that we've completely lost
track of what Air Force One should be.
