Some of high-tech's heaviest hitters will be in New York City Wednesday
to meet with President-elect Donald J. Trump. On the list of all-stars
expected to attend the meeting are Alphabet CEO Larry Page, Apple CEO

LinkedIn Begins New Chapter Under Microsoft's Wing
Microsoft last week closed its $26 billion acquisition of LinkedIn.
LinkedIn will remain a separate company and Jeff Weiner will continue as
its CEO, but he now reports to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Integration
of the companies' products is under way. Among many other things, a
user's LinkedIn identity and network will be made available in Microsoft
Outlook and the Office suite.

Looking Forward
Traditionally in this year-end piece, I peer into my cloudy crystal ball
and forecast the year ahead in CRM. Sometimes I'm close, other times
not, but either way, my predictions quickly are forgotten. This year,
I've decided just to say what I want rather than what realistically
might happen. Since my vote has all of the authority of yesterday's
news, it will follow past prognostications.

The Morning After: "Akira" on Game Boy, Adidas 3D Runner and iOS 10.2

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Tuesday, December 13, 2016.

Good morning, how was your Monday?

In news you might’ve missed: Netflix and Amazon snagged 17 Golden Globe nominations, “Pokémon Go is growing,” and a 3D-printed shoe from Adidas.

You can’t go 134 million MPH with radiation shielding on

How NASA is working with Stephen Hawking and Starshot

How NASA is working with Stephen Hawking and Starshot

Stephen Hawking and Yuri Milner’s $100 million Breakthrough Starshot program is trying to reach Alpha Centauri within a generation. Beyond shooting a “Starchip” probe at 1/5th the speed of light, their plan needs to make sure it’s capable of surviving the intense radiation it will encounter along the way. That’s where NASA comes in, along with scientists from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). They’re working on “self-healing” transistors that could be capable of surviving a 20-year deep space mission.

Watch the awards January 8th

Netflix and Amazon combine for 17 Golden Globe nominations

Award season is upon us, and some of your favorite series are in the running. Amazon’s “Manchester by the Sea,” “The Salesman,” “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle” all garnered nominations, while Netflix notables included “Stranger Things,” “The Crown” and “Divines.”

Smaller, with more compromises

Review: HP Spectre x360 (2016)

Review: HP Spectre x360 (2016)

This year’s Spectre x360 is thinner, smaller and lighter than its predecessor. Unfortunately, that compact design led to fewer ports (no HDMI or SD reader) and a smaller keyboard that Dana Wollman said “feels more cramped than it used to.” If you can live with a few compromises, it also promises better battery life and a faster SSD, with a starting price of $1,150.

KANEDAAAAA!

Gamer finds prototype copies of “Akira” for Game Boy

The popular “Akira” anime and manga haven’t been properly captured by a video game yet, but someone was trying to make one for Nintendo’s Game Boy. Retro game hunter Patrick Scott Patterson found four prototype copies and played through their unfinished levels. They’re severely broken, but a glimpse of those motorcycle and platforming sections is all we need.

Netflix has a surprise with “The OA”

What’s on your TV this week?

What’s on your TV this week?

Amazon’s second season of “The Man in the High Castle” premieres Friday morning. If you prefer Netflix, it surprised us by announcing a creepy miniseries called “The OA” that’s on its way the same day. “Star Trek” fans can enter the Roddenberry Vault on a new Blu-ray set; “Suicide Squad” is here in 4K; and “Forza Horizon 3” adds new Blizzard Mountain DLC.

Time to buy more incubators

“Pokémon Go” adds new Gen 2 pokémon

Niantic Labs mobile pokémon game is finally adding some new monsters, with Pichu, Togepi and more joining the roster. If players need another reason to stick with the game as temperatures drop, there are limited edition Pikachu spawning worldwide until December 29th.

Adidas 3D Runner is here, but it’s hard to get

Adidas 3D Runner is here, but it’s hard to get

We’ve seen a number of limited-release efforts using 3D-printing tech to make footwear, but this 3D Runner has an Olympic pedigree. Medal-winning Adidas athletes got a similar shoe, and now you can grab one if you’re in one of three cities and have $333 to spend. If you’re interested and live in NYC, register for a chance to pre-order with the Adidas Confirmed app.

But wait, there's more...

1. iOS 10.2 is here, complete with a new "TV" guide app

2. All Xbox One and One S bundles are $50 off through Christmas Eve

3. Parrot's drones get new features via a $20 mobile app

4. The next great indie game is about the dragon apocalypse

Today's Story Highlights

Microsoft Trumpets Stellar Surface Sales
Microsoft announced robust sales of its Surface line ahead of the
holiday season. November was the best month ever for consumer Surface
sales, according to Brian Hall, CVP of Microsoft devices marketing. The
sudden surge follows this fall's unveiling of the Surface Studio, the
Surface Dial, and the Surface Book with Performance Base, which delivers
twice the graphics power as its predecessor.

AT&T, Time Warner Defend Merger to Lawmakers
AT&T and Time Warner executives this week appeared before a subcommittee
of the Senate Judiciary Committee to respond to lawmakers' concerns
about their $84 billion merger. Their testimony came at a time of high
public skepticism of institutional power. Rival content and mobile
providers applied further pressure with questions about the impact the
deal would have on competition and pricing.

Fitbit Pulls Pebble From Rock, Hard Place
Fitbit has announced an acquisition deal with smartwatch maker Pebble.
It clearly has been struggling, having laid off 25 percent of its staff
earlier this year, when CEO Eric Migicovsky acknowledged that money was
tight. "Fitbit is acquiring certain assets of Pebble, including key
personnel and intellectual property specific to software and firmware
development," a Fitbit spokesperson said.

Stock Shortages May Deplete Brand Loyalty Fast
Many consumers fear a shortfall of highly desired items this holiday
season, and disappointed shoppers may switch to other brands, suggests a
survey Elementum released Thursday. The firm polled 2,001 adults in the
U.S. this fall. About 48 percent of the participants who were parents of
kids under 18 expressed concern about product shortages.

Without Numbers, Cook's Apple Watch Claims May Be Hollow
Apple drew some pointed questions this week following CEO Tim Cook's
vague response to reports suggesting Apple Watch demand has plummeted.
The Apple Watch is on track to set a holiday sales record and post its
best quarter ever, Cook said. Sell-through of the watch -- that is,
units sold to consumers and not just stocked on retailers' shelves --
also is on track to reach a new high, he added.

Bill Bolsters Legal Efforts of Wells Fargo Fraud Victims
U.S. lawmakers have introduced legislation to stop Wells Fargo from
enforcing arbitration agreements with victims of fraud it perpetrated
against them. Sen. Sherrod Brown, the ranking member of the Senate
Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Rep. Brad Sherman,
a member of the House Financial Services Committee, introduced the
Justice for Victims of Fraud Act of 2016 .

SCOTUS Scuttles Apple's Big Samsung Award
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday spoiled Apple's hopes for a big
payday, scotching the $399 million award in its successful patent
infringement suit against Samsung. Justice Sonia Sotomayor delivered the
Court's decision, which turned on what lawmakers meant by the term
"article of manufacture." The appeals court had ruled that it
encompassed the entire phone. The Supremes disagreed.

Uber Sees Gold in Autonomous Vehicle Field
Uber has announced the acquisition of startup Geometric Intelligence, a
move designed to increase its presence in the autonomous vehicle
technology field. Geometric CEO Gary Marcus will become the chief of
Uber's new artificial intelligence business. He will lead the newly
formed Uber AI Labs, which will be dedicated to conducting research into
artificial intelligence and machine learning.
