For the next eight or so years, I think a lot of what many of us are going to write will have something to do with what Donald Trump tweeted. Granted, since that has been the case for much of the last year, we have gotten comfortable with it. However, when Trump said he would kill the deal for an updated Air Force One, it hit me that we've completely lost track of what Air Force One should be. [More...]

AT&T, Time Warner Defend Merger to Lawmakers
AT&T and Time Warner executives this week appeared before a subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee to respond to lawmakers' concerns about their $84 billion merger. Their testimony came at a time of high public skepticism of institutional power. Rival content and mobile providers applied further pressure with questions about the impact the deal would have on competition and pricing. [More...]

The Morning After: Adidas' tech-packed flagship store and China's prototype bus gathers dust

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Monday, December 12, 2016.

Welcome to the start of the week!

As we all struggle into the office, catch up on Nintendo’s theme park schemes, how three elderly British dudes are responsible for the most pirated show ever, and the slow death of China’s wacky bus of the future.

Anything Nike can do...

Inside Adidas' new tech-infused store in New York City

Not to be outdone by its rival, Adidas has opened a new flagship store in New York City. And, just like Nike, the German company packed the space with loads of technology. Inside you'll find a virtual-reality experience and a wearable system designed to help you find the best running shoe. We took a tour / went shopping.

The first of three Nintendo park attractions

Nintendo’s debut theme park will join Universal Studios Japan

The Super Nintendo World park attraction will form a part of Universal Studios Japan in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, with similar attractions coming later to Hollywood and Orlando in the US. Nintendo first revealed news of the attractions last year, and It now has more details, saying the park attraction will have "state-of-the-art rides, interactive areas, shops and restaurants, all featuring Nintendo's most popular characters and games.” All very theme park-esque.

Who said ‘Game of Thrones’?

Amazon's 'Grand Tour' is the most pirated show ever

Amazon's 'Grand Tour' is the most pirated show ever
Amazon's Grand Tour, an auto show featuring the reheated stars of the BBC's Top Gear, has been an unmitigated success with fans, with its first episode garnering "millions" of views. It's also a hit with pirates who, instead of paying the annual $100 fee for Amazon Prime, have downloaded the first three episodes at unprecedented rates. According to data published by the Mail on Sunday, pirates illicitly downloaded the first episode 9.7 million times, the second episode 6.4 million times and the third 4.6 million times. A lion's share of the downloads (13.7 percent) came from the UK.

The test site has been abandoned for months

China’s elevated bus prototype is gathering dust

China’s elevated bus prototype is gathering dust
You might recall China's wacky Transit Elevated Bus which promised to carry passengers over traffic? Well, according to China News, the 22-meter-long prototype unveiled in early August has been collecting dust in its hangar for well over two months. The company has indeed been facing "significant" financial issues since mid-November, and its sole investor, a Beijing wealth management company, has refused to provide further cash.

But wait, there's more...

1. This Parisian cinema chain lets you test out VR for around $25

2. Researchers digitally reconstruct the face of a legendary Scottish king

3. Nanotechnology discovery could lead to low-power night vision

Traversing the Social Media Minefield
Many people expect celebrities and other prominent figures to have
thicker skins than the average Jane or Joe. However -- as evidenced by
the numbers of celebrities who've forsaken social media -- fame and
fortune are not effective defenses against an all-out troll assault.
While attacks on private individuals can be more personal and more
targeted, they're typically much less numerous.

Microsoft, Qualcomm Tuck Windows 10 Into ARM Devices
Microsoft on Wednesday announced the compatibility of Windows 10 and
native Windows apps with ARM-based processors, including Qualcomm's
Snapdragon, which currently powers a large percentage of Android
devices. The new partnership will make it possible for Windows
applications, peripherals and enterprise solutions to run on new mobile,
power efficient and always-connected cellular PCs.

Tech Giants Team to Battle Terrorism Online
Facebook has teamed up with Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft to fight the
proliferation of terrorist content on the Web. The tech giants will
create a shared industry database of hashes for violent terrorist
imagery, terrorist recruitment videos, or images they have removed from
their services. They may use these shared hashes to help identify
potential terrorist content on their platforms.

Android Marshmallow on PC Falls Flat
Android-x86 Project eventually may become a viable operating system
alternative for your desktop and laptops computers, but it's not there
yet. You will have to wait a while for the developers to fix a number of
failures with the latest release upgrading Android-x86 to Marshmallow
6.0.1. Android-x86 lets you run the Android OS with the Google Chrome
browser on your desktop and laptop computers.

Ransomware Fighters Get New Free Tool
Ransomware has become a gold mine for digital criminals. In the first
three months of this year, electronic extortionists squeezed $209
million from victims desperate to recover their data after it was
scrambled by the malicious software, based on FBI estimates. At that
rate, ransomware could funnel as much as $1 billion into criminal
coffers this year.

iPhone Envy May Have Felled Galaxy Note7
Samsung's desire to match the iPhone 7 Plus led it to implement an
aggressive design and manufacturing approach that led to problems with
its Galaxy Note7 -- including some instances of the smartphones bursting
into flames, Instrumental reported last week. Instrumental engineers
tore down a Galaxy Note7, and found "tension between safety and pushing
the boundaries," CEO Anna Shedletsky revealed.
