How Amazon Could Reshape More Industries in 2017
Anyone who attended the recent AWS re:Invent conference -- or watched
many sessions online, as I did -- probably is still trying to absorb the
full implications of all of the company's initiatives unveiled at the
event. Although AWS already has redefined the computing and software
development industries fundamentally, with its groundbreaking IaaS
offerings, it isn't resting on its laurels.

Amazon's Register-Free Grocery Shopping Could Disrupt Retail
Amazon on Monday unveiled a prototype convenience store called "Amazon
Go," which uses mobile e-commerce, machine learning and computer vision
to allow customers to make purchases without a cashier. The 1,800 square
foot concept store in Seattle uses the company's Just Walk Out
technology, which incorporates many of the same concepts found in self-
driving cars, Amazon said.

Twitter Buys Yes for Product VP Talent
Twitter has purchased Yes and named the mobile app startup's CEO, Keith
Coleman, as its new VP of product -- a challenging post. Coleman will be
Twitter's third VP of product this year and the fifth since 2014.
Twitter's main problems are monetization, which has plagued it since its
founding; slowing user growth; and stiff competition. Coleman's
supporters cite his previous experience at Google.

2016: The Year in Review
This year will go down as an important turning point in CRM. For the
last decade and a half, we've been simultaneously building and
destroying CRM -- first by linking all of the disparate databases to get
that 360-degree view, and then by adding important accessories like
social and analytics. At the same time, we've been busy tearing down
conventional architectures and spinning up the cloud.

Fitbit May Pick Up Pebble
Fitbit, the leader in the wearables category, is close to an agreement
to buy struggling smartwatch maker Pebble for up to $40 million, in a
move to gain the firm's intellectual property and software. The
negotiations follow several months of financial turmoil at Pebble, which
reportedly slashed its workforce by 25 percent in March and has rebuffed
several prior offers to be acquired.

Aptean SVP Matt Keenan: CRM Needs to Be Intuitive
There are three significant trends in CRM right now, according to Matt
Keenan, SVP of Aptean's product group. "The first is the rapid evolution
of human-system interaction. Gone are the days of sitting in front of a
laptop and interacting with CRM. Customers are looking for multiple
channels. The way people are interacting with applications and data is
evolving radically."

The Morning After: Google tries making a router and 2016 according to Twitter

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Wednesday, December 07, 2016.

Hey, good morning! It's Wednesday!

This morning, we’re talking about how Google has upgraded its search app to keep personal information and news separate, the same company’s attempt to solve router troubles forever. Oh and Novint Falcon's journey from haptic games controller to sex toy.

Your to-go guide

Google’s search app splits up news headlines from your upcoming events.

Google’s search app splits up news headlines from your upcoming events.<br />

The automated interests formerly known as Google Now are getting another refresh. In a change that’s rolling out first on Android (soon on iOS) the app will display two different sections of information. Upcoming has all of your personal info, like incoming packages, calendar events and reservations. Feed is where current events, sports and trending updates will go. In the age of personal AI assistants, figuring out a place for different types of info is going to be key.

Technology’s biggest patent fight still isn’t over

Supreme Court sides with Samsung over Apple patent penalty

Supreme Court sides with Samsung over Apple patent penalty<br />

Samsung’s Supreme Court appeal worked: the justices unanimously voted that the company’s violations of Apple’s iPhone design patents were only valid for a part of a smartphone, not the entire device. This means the $548 million penalty sum will return to the lower courts and be reduced. To what degree, however, is up to the courts. The iPhone’s design is iconic -- and that will be noted.

It makes a world of difference

Spotify Connect is live on Sonos

After a short beta period, a feature that lets Sonos owners control their audio gear from within Spotify’s app is available to all. It works across desktop and mobile, and can jump from speakers to headphones with the tap of a button.

The next big thing in teledildonics

Computer Love: Novint Falcon (NSFW)

Computer Love: Novint Falcon (NSFW)<br />

The Novint Falcon debuted as a haptic joystick in 2005, and despite a lot of enthusiasm, never made it to market in a big way. Now, it’s had something of a resurgence, but this time as a sex toy. In this edition of Computer Love, Executive Editor Christopher Trout investigates whether its hardware is up to the task.

An end to “Have you tried switching it off and on again?”

Review: Google WiFi

Review: Google WiFi <br />

Google WiFi is a solid choice if you're looking for a router that mixes smart design with simple features and solid performance,. However, users who like to get their hands dirty may prefer the control and flexibility of more conventional products. For the rest of us, Google WiFi will likely provide an easy transition to the connected home. Check out our full review.

Somehow it’s not just an endless RIP list

The top ten Twitter conversations in 2016

The clock is almost up on 2016, and not a moment too soon. Twitter has a round up of the top conversations from this year, including Game of Thrones, Brexit and Black Lives Matter in its Moments format. Of course, it wasn’t all death and politics -- remember, Leo finally won an Oscar.

But wait, there's more...

1. Constant updates and online functionality pushed Bungie out of making 'Halo' games

2. Chance the Rapper's 'Coloring Book' is the first streaming-only album up for a Grammy

3. Apple's TV single sign-on feature is live

Today's Story Highlights

Multinational Effort Halts Malware Avalanche
The DoJ on Monday released new details about the multinational takedown
of Avalanche, a multimillion-dollar malware and money-laundering
network, following a four-year probe led by German police and
prosecutors. Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell, Acting U.S.
Attorney Soo C. Song and Assistant Director Scott S. Smith of the FBI's
Cyber Division made the announcement in Pittsburgh.

AI Platforms Welcome Devs With Open Arms
Two leaders in the field of artificial intelligence have announced that
they're open-sourcing their AI platforms. After investing in building
rich simulated environments to serve as laboratories for AI research,
Google's DeepMind Lab said it would open the platform for the broader
research community's use. DeepMind has "only barely scratched the
surface of what is possible," the team said.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84138.html

Facebook Videos Explain AI in a Nutshell
Facebook last week released six videos to educate people about
artificial intelligence. AI will bring major changes to society, and
will be the backbone of many of the most innovative apps and services of
the future, but it remains mysterious, noted Yann LeCun, Facebook's
director of AI research, and Joaquin Candela, the company's director of
applied machine learning in an online post.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84135.html

Isn't Fake News Propaganda?
A few years back, when it was one company, HP made a huge mistake that
cost a number of people their jobs and forced the replacement of many of
its board members. The company suffered through some nasty litigation
and several top executives almost landed in jail. The mistake was tied
back to something called "pretexting." It also went by the more common
term "identity theft."
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84131.html

Apple Drone Fleet to Gather Maps Data
Apple reportedly has assembled a group of robotics and data-collection
experts who will use drones to obtain data for updates to its Maps app.
Apple, Google and others in the cartography space currently collect a
lot of their data using motor vehicles equipped with high-tech gear.
"That's a very expensive and time-consuming process," said Sam
Abuelsamid, an analyst at Navigant Research.
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/84133.html

Refracta 8.0 Is a Pint-Sized Powerhouse
Refracta is a somewhat obscure Linux distribution that offers
exceptional functionality and stability. Obscurity is not always a bad
thing when it comes to Linux distros. You can find some very worthwhile
alternatives to your current operating system. Refracta is a big
surprise in a small package. Many look-alike desktop distros are
difficult to distinguish from run-of-the-mill garden varieties.
