AWS Announces AI, Hybrid Cloud Innovations
Amazon Web Services has introduced a new set of technologies designed to
pull the artificial intelligence expertise developed for its core retail
business into the cloud, while expanding its hybrid cloud technologies
into the field, where data services can use the IoT to access connected
devices. AWS CEO Andy Jassy unveiled the new lineup of services at the
company's annual re:Invent conference.

Netflix Offers Offline Option at Long Last
Giving in to years of customer pressure, Netflix has announced that a
limited number of television shows and movies will be available for
viewing offline without a live connection to the Internet. Customers
have been asking for a way to view content on airplanes or other
locations where Internet service might be unavailable or expensive,
noted Eddy Wu, director of product innovation at Netflix.

Qualitative Data - the Other Stuff
We've become obsessed with big data and analyzing it, though sometimes I
think we get in our own way. The issue is that we preferentially collect
quantitative data as if it were the only thing worth the time. In fact,
quantitative data is but one kind of data, and the information it
provides gives a one-dimensional view of the world. It's not wrong
information -- just incomplete.

Zenefits Pays the Piper
The California Department of Insurance this week announced fines
totaling $7 million against startup Zenefits, a provider of cloud-based
human resources services. The company's former leadership "created an
anything goes culture at the Internet startup, resulting in numerous
violations of licensing requirements to protect consumers," said
Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones.

Gooligan Ransacks More Than 1M Android Accounts
More than 1 million Google accounts have been breached by Android
malware dubbed "Gooligan," Check Point reported Wednesday. The malware
roots infected devices and steals authentication tokens that can be used
to access data from various Google apps including Gmail, Google Docs, G
Suite and Google Drive. It potentially affects devices running Android 4
and 5.

Reddit Has Had It With Trolls
Reddit has announced reforms designed to crack down on trolls and punish
its most abusive community members. Reddit has identified hundreds of
the most "toxic users," said CEO Steve Huffman, who founded the site 11
years ago while in college, and it has devised a plan to take action
against them. Consequence for unacceptable behavior could range from
warnings to timeouts to permanent bans.

Gadget Ogling: Smarter Slumber and Pod-Free Coffee
In a previous column, I revealed how terrible a sleeper I am. My
mattress is old, and there's a sizable dent on my side of the bed. It's
probably time to find a new mattress, so perhaps it's time to consider
one that connects with the rest of my home. Eight's smart mattress gives
you a little more incentive to get out of bed, as you can set up a
string of IFTTT recipes to improve your morning routine.

Docker, Canonical Team on Enterprise Support
Docker and Canonical on Wednesday announced a commercial agreement to
integrate support for Docker Engine. The partnership gives Canonical
customers a single path for support of the Ubuntu operating system and
CS Docker Engine in enterprise Docker operations. It provides a
streamlined operations and support experience for joint customers by
splitting the service obligations in four ways.

Here's Looking at You, Alexa
Amazon is developing a premium version of its Alexa-powered Echo
speaker, which will have a 7-inch touchscreen, in a bid to stave off
competition from Google and other companies developing rival offerings,
Bloomberg reported Tuesday. Designed for use in the kitchen, the new
device would have an upward-tilting touchscreen that would permit a user
to swipe controls from a standing position.

It's All Aboard for Linux Gamers at The Final Station
The developers of The Final Station , recognizing the growing market for
the post-apocalyptic train ride in the open source community, have made
their hot-selling title available for the Linux OS. The indie game,
which Do My Best Games and TinyBuild launched for PC, Mac, Xbox One and
PlayStation 4 this summer, became available for Linux last week.

The Morning After: The Game Awards, hydrogen-powered big rigs and how AI works

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Friday, December 02, 2016.

Congratulations, it's Friday!

Before you configure a new Chevy Bolt, check out all the highlights and trailers from last night’s videogame awards show or wax nostalgic about manual transmissions, first make sure you sign up for a chance to win a smart home surveillance kit, courtesy of Synology -- the entry window closes tonight at 11:59PM ET.

So long, stick

The slow death of the manual transmission

<p>The slow death of the manual transmission</p>

Cars with a stick shift are already hard to find, but the advent of EVs could put the final nail in the coffin. Like many of you, Roberto Baldwin will miss the satisfaction and control that driving stick offers, even if a “solid, utilitarian” Bolt can drive to your destination stress-free.

XBMC everywhere

DIY media center fans don’t have to choose between offshoots of the XBMC family tree. Plex is not only releasing its Media Player software for free, it’s releasing an add-on for Kodi (fka XBMC) so that its users can easily access their content from that front end as well. The add-on is available now in beta, for Plex Pass subscribers.

Can’t wait for a Model 3? Chevrolet’s all-electric EV is now on sale in a couple of states. You can spec out a Bolt on its website no matter where you live, with options that put the price between $37,495 and $44,950 (before any tax credits).

An “anomaly”

Russian ISS resupply mission destroyed during launch

Yesterday morning at 9:51AM ET, ISS Progress 65 launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. What happened after that is unclear, but ground control lost contact with the rocket during its third stage, and has confirmed the ship is destroyed. Astronauts aboard the space station are safe, and Japan’s JAXA has a launch scheduled for December 9th.

“We want to tell people it's not magic”

Facebook revealed a series of videos to explain how artificial intelligence works

Facebook revealed a series of videos to explain how artificial intelligence works<br />

These days, it’s possible to use AI without even knowing it, and a series of videos released by Facebook are trying to explain its role in our daily lives. Whether it’s a Siri response, automatically tagged image or algorithmically sorted News Feed, computers are making a lot of the behind-the-scenes decisions on their own. Yann LeCun, Facebook's director of AI research, says “AI is going to affect our lives … It's very important for people to have some idea on how it works and what it can do.”

One more reason to cut the cord

Now you can add HBO or Cinemax to Amazon Prime

Now you can add HBO or Cinemax to Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime already offered premium options like Showtime and Starz, but now it’s adding HBO and Cinemax to the mix. Coming just in time for you to catch up on “Westworld” or “Insecure,” it won’t beat the price of a cable add-on package (or standalone HBO Now), but if Amazon is how you watch TV, it keeps everything in one place. Branded “Amazon Channels,” the company says it now offers over 80 video subscriptions.

It’s coming in 2020

This big rig doesn’t run on gasoline or diesel

This big rig doesn’t run on gasoline or diesel

Meet the Nikola One, a class 8 hauler that ditches traditional fuel sources for the sweet flavor of hydrogen. Nikola says it’s capable of going 800 to 1,200 miles on a tank, which is good, because hydrogen fuel stations are hard to find in the US and Canada right now. There’s time for that to change before the truck launches in 2020, however, and it plans to break ground on refueling stations starting in 2018.

But wait, there's more...

1. Review: Korg's Electribe sequencers

2. Fitbit is reportedly buying Pebble for between $34 and $40 million

3. How the obscure "Rule 41" lets law enforcement search any computer
