Editor's Pick: Why Trump May Be the Better Technology President

Years ago, I worked as one of Rev. Robert Schuller's body guards (it was something to do on Sundays, I wasn't particularly religious) and one of his sayings was "when given lemons, make lemonade." Personally, I wasn't excited about either presidential candidate, but I actually think Trump could be a better technology candidate than Clinton would have been. [More...]

Google Insists Android Plays on Level Field in Europe
Google on Thursday fired back at the European Commission's charges that it violated antitrust law by imposing coercive rules on mobile operators and developers who use or write applications for its Android operating system. The EC this spring charged that Google's requirements to use its search engine and its Chrome browser on mobile devices running Android were coercive tactics. [More...]
First Hyperloop Could Blaze a Trail Between Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Hyperloop One, which aims to fulfill the vision of high-speed transportation promoted by Elon Musk, has signed a deal to develop a line between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates. The project reportedly will have several stations throughout Dubai connecting the hyperloop system to Abu Dhabi. Pods will carry passengers and cargo between the two. [More...]
Engagement and Loyalty
I've been writing about customer loyalty a lot -- and not just to sell my book, though you can buy it any time you want. Seriously, though, markets everywhere are cooling. They once were ripe with new categories and products, but everybody now seems to have the new stuff, and growth is falling back to the baseline of organic growth. That's why loyalty is so important today. [More...]

The Morning After: A Kindle made for manga, Nike's tech-laced flagship store and a supermoon.

eng-daily-newsletter

It's Monday, November 14, 2016.

It's Monday morning, time to get back to work.

Engadget's weekend included a Japan-only Kindle made for manga and comics, an early tour of Nike's tech-packed store in NYC and staring at a supermoon. So it wasn't a bad weekend. This week, expect to hear plenty of car news, direct from the LA Auto Show. And even if you're no petrolhead, there should be more than enough tech news, reviews and occasionally furious editorials to get you through the week.

'Can I try on the Nike Mags?' 'No.'

We tour Nike's new tech-laced NYC store

We tour Nike's new tech-laced NYC store

Nike's new five-storey store in the middle of SoHo has a Kinect-sensor rigged basketball hoop, a new "Nike By NYC" customization studio, plenty of space to show off the Apple Watch Nike+ and of course, self-lacing sneakers. The aforementioned customization studio will let shoppers place on-demand orders for designs that will be exclusive to the SoHo store.

Made for manga

Japan loves its homemade comics, so Amazon made an e-reader especially for them. Delivering eight times the storage of existing Kindles, and a bunch of speedy navigation upgrades, you might just be ready to start reading manga and comics on your e-reader. It's not quite perfect, however.

Microsoft might be a little hostile to third-party security apps.

Kaspersky says Windows' security bundle is anti-competitive

Windows 10's bundled Defender security tool can help with basic antivirus protection, but what about third-party options? The operating system normally steps aside when you run other programs, but antivirus mainstay Kaspersky (and its boss, Eugene... Kaspersky) believes Microsoft still isn't playing fair enough. He's filed complaints in both the EU and Russia alleging that Windows 10's handling of third-party antivirus tools is anti-competitive.

But wait, there's more...

1. Get excited, here's the first 'Ghost In The Shell' live action trailer.

2. Did you stare at the supermoon? It's the biggest in 68 years.

3. The last week in numbers, here's the After Math.

The Morning After is a new daily newsletter from Engadget designed to help you fight off FOMO. Who knows what you'll miss if you don't subscribe.

Twitter Shuffles Deck as COO Bain Steps Down
Twitter COO Adam Bain is leaving the company, according to a document
the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission earlier
this week. The news comes just weeks after Twitter's attempt to find a
buyer failed. Bain ran the company's entire revenue business. CFO
Anthony Noto will step into his vacated spot, meaning the company will
need to find a new financial chief.

Election Day Cybershenanigans Highlight Need to Shore Up Security
Hackers last week launched DDoS attacks against both presidential
candidates' campaign websites. The attacks were routed through HTTP
Layer 7 of the OSI protocol. There were at least four 30-second attacks
reported. "The websites were not penetrated by a cyberintrusion," said
John Costello, a senior analyst at Flashpoint. The attackers were
unsophisticated hackers and not a nation-state.

Silicon Valley Reels From Trump Shock
PayPal cofounder Peter Thiel ran a victory lap following Tuesday's
presidential election, but many other Silicon Valley figures were
stunned by the historic upset victory of real estate mogul Donald Trump
against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Thiel, a billionaire
conservative activist, last month made headlines by donating $1.25
million to Trump.

AWS Gives Customers On-Premises Linux Option
Amazon Web Services recently expanded its menu of cloud services to give
customers the option of using the Amazon Linux AMI on premises.
Customers can use the Amazon Container Image on premises for the purpose
of developing and testing workloads, AWS Chief Evangelist Jeff Barr
explained. The AMI provides a stable, secure and high-performance

Defeating Malware With Its Own DNA
It's widely known that human DNA evidence has had a major impact in the
criminal justice system. Now another kind of DNA may have a similar
impact in the fight to eradicate malicious software. Malware DNA, also
known as "malware provenance," is the art and science of attributing
elements of one object to another object. The technique has applications
outside information security -- for example, in genetics, or to test the
authorship of student papers.

Daydream Believers May Boost VR, Suggest Early Reviews
Reviews for Google's Daydream View VR headset began to appear on
Thursday, and the consensus among those who were able to test the new
US$79 device appears to be two thumbs up. Although it has limitations,
Daydream could be a gateway to affordable virtual reality technology,
they suggested. The headset needs to be paired with Google's new line of
Pixel and Pixel XL phones.

Samsung's Next Galaxy Phone Could Have Siri-Like Smarts
Samsung Electronics this week revealed plans to unveil its flagship
Galaxy S8 mobile phone with a new digital assistant powered by AI. The
assistant will be based on technology gained with Samsung's recent
acquisition of Viv Labs. The plans call for Samsung to incorporate the
AI into its family of electronics and appliances, ranging from mobile
devices to wearable technology and home devices.

Google's Pixel Wins a Place in the Sun
Google's Pixel smartphone, which made its debut last month, has gathered
some high praise from reviewers. "The Google Pixel is now the best
Android smartphone you can buy," wrote Joanna Stern. "The other leading
contender was disqualified due to spontaneous combustion," she added,
referring to Samsung's doomed Galaxy Note7, which was recalled for
safety reasons.
