Defeating Malware With Its Own DNA

It's widely known that human DNA evidence has had a major impact in the
criminal justice system. Now another kind of DNA may have a similar
impact in the fight to eradicate malicious software. Malware DNA, also
known as "malware provenance," is the art and science of attributing
elements of one object to another object. The technique has applications
outside information security -- for example, in genetics, or to test the
authorship of student papers.

Daydream Believers May Boost VR, Suggest Early Reviews

Reviews for Google's Daydream View VR headset began to appear on
Thursday, and the consensus among those who were able to test the new
US$79 device appears to be two thumbs up. Although it has limitations,
Daydream could be a gateway to affordable virtual reality technology,
they suggested. The headset needs to be paired with Google's new line of
Pixel and Pixel XL phones.

Samsung's Next Galaxy Phone Could Have Siri-Like Smarts

Samsung Electronics this week revealed plans to unveil its flagship
Galaxy S8 mobile phone with a new digital assistant powered by AI. The
assistant will be based on technology gained with Samsung's recent
acquisition of Viv Labs. The plans call for Samsung to incorporate the
AI into its family of electronics and appliances, ranging from mobile
devices to wearable technology and home devices.

Google's Pixel Wins a Place in the Sun

Google's Pixel smartphone, which made its debut last month, has gathered
some high praise from reviewers. "The Google Pixel is now the best
Android smartphone you can buy," wrote Joanna Stern. "The other leading
contender was disqualified due to spontaneous combustion," she added,
referring to Samsung's doomed Galaxy Note7, which was recalled for
safety reasons.

Nintendo's miniaturized NES emulator is officially on sale today. The $60 hunk of nostalgia will be sold on Amazon at 2PM ET, so set a reminder if you can't stop by a local Best Buy, Gamestop or Target to pick one up. Even if you don't buy one immediately, expect more impressions from us soon.

Review: Surface Book (2016)

This year's Surface Book has very few flaws. It's well-crafted and has a comfortable keyboard, a vibrant screen, fast performance and even longer battery life than last year's model. As ever, you'll pay dearly for the privilege, and the relatively heavy weight and imbalanced weight distribution make it less portable than lighter systems. With that heft, though, comes incredible battery life and no shortage of port options.

Review: Google's Daydream View VR headset

Google's Daydream View is here, and it's a solid first attempt at a mobile VR headset from the company that gave us Android. Importantly, it's comfortable, and VR experiences look great. The only problem is there aren't many apps available for it yet -- and we need more Daydream-compatible phones. At the moment, users are limited to Google's own Pixel handsets.

YouTube's VR app is Daydream-only for now

Now that Google's VR platform is available, it's launched the official VR app for YouTube. You'll need the new phone and headset to access it, since it's not on any other platforms yet, but now you can watch anything from the streaming site in its virtual confines. That includes 360-degree videos, or just regular stuff projected on an imaginary screen, along with voice search and all your existing subscriptions.

Snapchat's hard-to-get shades will be available only via vending machine

If you want a pair of Snapchat's circular video-recording sunglasses, you'll need to find a SnapBot machine. So far there's only one, located near the company's headquarters in LA. It's already run out, and pairs are already selling for $900 on eBay. The best way to get a pair is probably by watching the Spectacles Twitter account, or hitting the home page that lists where bots are available.

A "damn-near-perfect" mobile game?

ThirtyThreeGames programmer Logan Gilmour says, "We weren't out to just make an infinite runner mobile game that's run-of-the-mill," and Aaron Souppouris agrees. "RunGunJumpGun" is out for iOS and Android, with challenging gameplay built around two inputs: shoot and jump. According to Aaron, "it's perhaps the most challenging, rewarding and downright fun mobile game of the year," and it's available for $3 on iTunes, Steam and Google Play.

Commerce Dept Signs Up Private Sector IT Partners

The U.S. Commerce Department recently launched a new effort to jump-
start more efficient ways to manage the vast amounts of data that reside
within the federal government and put it to productive use. The National
Technical Information Service, a unit within the department, is leading
the effort. NTIS has selected 35 joint venture partners, or JVPs, to
support the program.

Google Cites Amazon Competition in Response to EU

Google last week filed a response in a 6-year-old antitrust battle with
the EU, which has charged that its search ads unfairly promoted its own
shopping service and blocked rivals. The response addresses a revision
the EC sent to Google this summer. The commission's original statement
of objections narrowly defined online shopping services to exclude
services like Amazon, Google noted.

Facebook Share Price Falls Despite Blowout Quarter

Facebook on Wednesday reported a record Q3, beating analysts'
expectations for the fourth straight quarter, but concerns among
investors about increased expenditures and the company's future
prospects drove down share prices. They closed Thursday at $119.95, down
more than $7 from Wednesday's closing price of $127.17. Friday saw
little movement, with a closing price of $120.75.

Microsoft Launches Teams to Foil Office 365 Poachers

Microsoft has launched Teams, a new collaboration offering designed to
fend off Office 365 competitors. The new chat-based workspace product
brings together people, conversations and content, along with some
familiar productivity tools, to facilitate collaboration on projects.
"With Microsoft Teams, we aspire to create a more open, digital
environment," noted Microsoft VP Kirk Koenigsbauer.
